virtual light and the other stories in that series are set in a near-future world of advanced technology beyond what we have today but not too far beyond

pattern recognition and the other stories in that series are set in the real world, with googles and iphones and so on, with advanced technology pulled from articles he found in wired

Well i dint mean about his writing i just mean in general, like rate of tech dvelopment is fast enough that a sci fi writer can literally live to see his stories become contemporary fiction
