What the hell, I'll just eat some trash.

Took a break, came roaring back with the exceptional Le Trou. It's as tense as Rififi, but with better characters. The first twenty minutes or so remind me of Goodfellas, I feel like Scorcese's version of prison life is indebted to Becker's. EDIT: I just upgraded this because I can't stop thinking about it. That five minute sustained shot of concrete smashing. That little periscope. The details are so tactile. And that ending. That loving ending. This is one of those movies that's gonna sit with me for a while.

OH! I forgot, I also watched Sling Blade, and it was loving terrific. I was worried it was gonna be gimmicky like Forrest Gump, but it really nailed the sad beauty of the character and the setting. Terrific acting all around - special props to Dwight Yoakam who played a stock character in a fresh way, and the little kid lead who looked SO MUCH like young Sean Penn in Tree of Life.

CloseFriend, I know the feeling of being sluggish on long movies, but I promise you Hoop Dreams is worth it.

New list:

new: Mike's Murder I don't know enough '80s dramas, and I heard this is a hidden classic crime movie. But the same person who told me that said the same about 8 Million Ways to Die, which is dick.

Beware of a Holy Whore Cult Fassbinder hit?

Night Moves I've been meaning to watch this since Arthur Penn died, but haven't gotten to it.

new: Billy Liar I own it in that 10 Year of Rialto set, but it just ain't gonna happen without a push.

I Know Where I'm Going! Really gotta get to work on P&P.

The Mystery of Picasso I like Picasso and I like Clouzot. Let's do it.

Toto, Peppino e la malafemmina Italian comedy doesn't do it for me, but Terrence Malick of all people loves this one. Certainly worth a try.

Body Heat I got nothin'

Montenegro or Sweet Movie I loved WR and the Eclipse set, but I've avoided Sweet Movie because I heard it sucks and Montenegro because the poster is crap.

Barfly I'm a big Bukowski fan which, actually, is why I keep avoiding this.

penis, watch I Know Where I'm Going! because I like the title and the Archers.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance was good, but I was a bit disappointed to be honest. It was well made with some great acting from Stewart and the standard Wayne. It just seemed to be missing that constant sense of tension that most westerns have. The sense that there could be a shootout and people could die in any scene. Maybe because there were only three bad guys, with no allies who lived in the town. And the one character they do beat up and supposedly kill turns up completely fine in the next scene, stitched up by the doctor. Still, it was enjoyable, but not as much as most great westerns. 4/5

Un malheur ne vient jamais seul.
TenSpadesBeTrump, I don't remember it very well, but I remember having a high opinion of Ghost World, so enjoy!

Hoop Dreams is indeed an excellent movie. I'm not going to lie; my first thought was, "A three-hour documentary about high school basketball? You gotta be loving kidding me." But the film is so captivating that I didn't even care. I can't decide if the film's central message was encouraging—that willpower, diligence, and duteousness are the keys to success (an object lesson exemplified by Curtis' failure)—or fatalistic—that no matter how hard you follow your dreams, there's always that chance that bad luck (like an injured knee or a junkie, abusive father) can gently caress it all up.

Maybe from looking at William at the end, the whole thing's a Catch-22: in order to become successful at something you have to do it so much that you probably won't even enjoy it anymore. That's what resonated with me strongest, mostly because it seemed like the coaches and the recruiters and the scouts (especially Pingatore) all seemed to care about sports in a way that was passionless but obsessive. For me, the most striking moments were the borderline-apathetic marquee messages outside Marshall Metro. There, nobody cared if you got good grades or played good sports or what. They just wanted you to show up and maybe show up on time. Just looking at the facilities at St. Joe's and Marshall's drives home the film's message that not all students are cared about equally.

I just read about the Academy's flashlight evaluation process and how it affected this film. It's hard enough respecting the Academy without hearing about a loving injustice like that.

Not sure why it took me so long to watch Rocky, it's quite good and it doesn't have that Stallone camp about it, that his 80's and 90's career had. Fun watch if nothing else.

The Shame List:

Dark City I hear this one is like The Matrix. But actually good.

Midnight Cowboys Cowboys eh?

Videodrome Horror Cronenberg.

Easy Rider Get you motor running...

Charade The trailer is hilarious.

Ace in the Hole Haven't watched a Wilder in a while.

Dracula The Francis Ford Coppola one.

Mystic River Got no idea what this one is about.

Mesrine: Killer Instinct Mark Kermode told me to watch it, but I'm lazy.

The Double Life of Veronique It looks pretty.

Have watched so far 4 movies: Barton Fink, Sweet Smell of Success, The 400 Blows, Rocky.

Electronico6, I got Videodrome recently, and now I pass it on to you.

I watched The Conversation (last night before Electronico6 assigned it), which I really liked. I thought it was dull and mundane at first, but the second act has some great character moments and the last act really heats up. I particularly liked Caul's gray suit and semi-transparent raincoat, the former indicating his desire for neutrality and the latter his desire to hide in the shadows undetected. I also liked the way Caul's backstory was given, a large chunk of it through Moran's story and another in the surreal dream sequence.

Overall, I'm actually surprised I liked it. I have bad hearing and whispering/mumbling/garbled dialogue—which this film has a lot of—is a massive pet peeve of mine in real life because of it. Also, I hated Blow-Up, and I can't believe I could like a movie that cribs so heavily from it.

I don't know if I thought about it any more than any other movie I really liked, but I did really like it. Enjoy.

Satantango: Perhaps an expression of vacuity within the soul; the desolate landscapes and destitute characters coalesce into a journey of exploration for...something. Some blip on the radar of emotion to give them more reason to go forward. Or maybe not; I really don't have much of a clue. I didn't even start getting involved and loving certain things about the film until around the third hour, when for some reason the poetic narration started to ring truer, and the sad void of a tone began to feel more at home. Even then, some scenes feel somewhat superfluous, while others are downright brilliant beyond explanation (of particular note are the scene where the girl lies down amongst the fog, and when the villagers approach and explore the manor). Additionally, any movie, regardless of country of origin or genre, containing a drunken party scene should be judged upon that single scene alone, and here Satantango succeeds wonderfully. The awkward inebriated dancing as well as the dude with the bun on his forehead were so great that I was pleased to be able to watch it twice, from two different angles, as the film went on. 85/100

1. Three Colors: Blue: I've lollygagged around with these long enough.

2. The Color of Pomegranites: Not much of an idea of what to expect here, but a trusted friend of mine recommends it with the highest esteem.

3. Shane: I'm trying really hard to get through the majority of these classic Westerns.

4. Notorious: I may have seen this as a kid, but I remember nothing.

5. The Americanization of Emily: I want to get my Paddy on.

6. The Hidden Fortress: Kurosawa movies tend to put me in a nice glow after watching one of his movies, and I gather that this one is no different.

7. In the Mood for Love: I have yet to react with any other fashion than complete adoration for all the Wong Kar Wai I've seen.

8. Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans: Next highest on the They Shoot Pictures list.

9. The Apartment: Don't know much about it; I am quite fond of Jack Lemmon.

10. Red River: I'm pretty sure I've seen this, but I was probably 6 or 7 and don't remember a thing about it.

Kull watch The Apartment.

Memento was a great experience. The narrative tricks work really well for the first viewing. I can't imagine it being nearly as engaging after watching it multiple times.

1. The Battleship Potemkin - I don't really have any interest in watching this but it's ranked pretty drat high on the They Shoot Pictures list.

2. Tokyo Story - I think I might have a problem appreciating muted emotions in movies. I might have a hard time watching this.

3. Memento The Usual Suspects - I've known the big "twist" for years, so I never really had this as a priority.

4. Mean Streets - Love Scorsese, but I've heard people say that this is too similar to Taxi Driver but not nearly as good. That's okay, even if it isn't half as good as Taxi Driver it'll still be a good film.

5. Stagecoach - Had Rio Bravo here for a while, but I think this is a better pick for this thread.

6. Videodrome - I am intrigued.

7. Seven - Saw the ending on TV and didn't realize it, oh well. I should probably watch the rest of it.

8. Forbidden Planet - More classic sci-fi.

9. La Dolce Vita - Another Fellini film.

10. Brief Encounter - Haven't seen that many movies from the 40's. A David Lean film that isn't a sprawling adventure sounds interesting.

Watched: The Seventh Seal, Moon, Barton Fink, The Thin Blue Line, Cool Hand Luke, Citizen Kane, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Rear Window, North by Northwest, Goodfellas, Casablanca, City Lights, Seven Samurai, Bicycle Thieves, Do the Right Thing, The Battle of Algiers, On the Waterfront, Wild Strawberries, The Trial, Adaptation, Unforgiven, Annie Hall, The 400 Blows, Diabolique, Mulholland Dr., Dirty Harry, The 39 Steps, Aguirre: The Wrath of God, 8 1/2, Boogie Nights, A Streetcar Named Desire, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The General, Pickpocket, Pulp Fiction, Amadeus, Lawrence of Arabia, Eraserhead, The Lady Vanishes, The Wild Bunch, A Clockwork Orange, Platoon, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Ikiru, Jules and Jim, The Asphalt Jungle, M, The Thin Red Line, Dial M for Murder, The Sting, Once Upon a Time in the West, The Exterminating Angel, A Woman Under the Influence, Singin' in the Rain, Scenes from a Marriage, Badlands, City of God, The Gold Rush, The Maltese Falcon, The Conformist, The Shawshank Redemption, High and Low, It's a Wonderful Life, Days of Heaven, Le Samourai, The Night of the Hunter, Metropolis, The New World, Persona, Manhattan, Some Like It Hot, The Rules of the Game, Nights of Cabiria, The Graduate, Pather Panchali, Punch-Drunk Love, Grand Illusion, The Hustler, The Great Escape, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Memento (Total: 81)

Been out for a few weeks as I was troubleshooting my PC that broke. I ended up building a new one.

The Celebration - Knowing anything beyond the title of this film is going to diminish it for first viewings. The Netflix description and even the MPAA rating screen gave too much information.

This was very voyeuristic and experiential and shot from a lot of "fly on the wall" angles. It feels as if these are all real events taking place. In this respect it reminded me of the "Look" TV series on Showtime that follows people through security cameras.

After the first half hour the film unfolded the way I expected it to. It reminded me of a boxing match. The two fighters being Christian and Helge of course. Each time Christian is shot down and brushed off he retreats and comes back with a larger, more explicit revelation.

I did notice that the film was fullscreen and looked almost amateurish at times. I came across the Dogme95 movement. Kind of interesting but maybe a little too dogmatic.

The sixth tenet of this movement is "The film must not contain superficial action (murders, weapons, etc. must not occur.)" I don't know why murders/weapons are considered superficial.

It was an interesting change of pace from the typical mainstream top 250 film.

PS I have a certain side interest any time I watch Swedish/Scandinavian films as a lot of my family emigrated from there in the last century. I'd like to visit it sometime but I don't know the language.

IMDb list:

#174 The Bourne Ultimatum - The first two in the series were good. 8/17/11

#196 Mary and Max - Never heard of it. I just looked it up and it's about clay people. Hopefully it lives up to Gumby's standard. 6/22/11

#211 The Passion of Joan of Arc - Vampyr had some interesting things in it so maybe this will too. 7/21/11

#218 Let the Right One In - Newer release about vampires. Hopefully better than the Twilight saga. 8/6/11

#219 Mystic River - I vaguely remember seeing this reviewed. Something about a trial gone awry? 8/9/11

#226 Howl's Moving Castle - I liked Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke but My Neighbor Totoro was a little too childish for me. 8/25/11

#227 Infernal Affairs - If Jack Nicholson's role in The Departed was based on a predecessor in this I'll probably like it. 8/25/11

#228 Manhattan - It seems that I've seen Woody Allen's lesserknowns more than his big hits. 8/31/11

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets - First one was entertaining enough. One down seven to go. 9/1/11

new #230 Children of Men - Another newer one I haven't gotten around to yet. Don't know anything about it really. 9/17/11

Surprised you actually liked the first one.

Really enjoyed Videodrome. Very weird and (just a tad) hosed up, the body horror stuff really crawls under your skin. Liked how the line between reality and the hallucinations completely vanishes towards the end, and you just have to go with it. It puts you right into Max's mind during those scenes and doesn't let go till the credits start to roll. The message is quite blunt but hey it was the 80's. Really great stuff.

What the hell, I'll just eat some trash.

I Know Where I'm Going is a sweetheart. Magnificently shot (it had to be an inspiration for Ford), with a nice love story. Nothing game-changing, but a solid and dependable reinforcement of '40s cinema.

Electronico6, Charade all day erry day.

New list:

Mike's Murder I don't know enough '80s dramas, and I heard this is a hidden classic crime movie. But the same person who told me that said the same about 8 Million Ways to Die, which is dick.

Beware of a Holy Whore Cult Fassbinder hit?

Night Moves I've been meaning to watch this since Arthur Penn died, but haven't gotten to it.

Billy Liar I own it in that 10 Year of Rialto set, but it just ain't gonna happen without a push.

Montenegro or Sweet Movie I loved WR and the Eclipse set, but I've avoided Sweet Movie because I heard it sucks and Montenegro because the poster is crap.

It's okay...

Charade is no Hitchcock thriller but it has plenty of twists and turns to it's story, Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn make a very funny pair and it remains intriguing and entertaining till the end. Really everything you want from these kind of films, and some of the more absurd moments don't take away from the tension. Also Cary Grant's best moment in his career:

This alone is worth the price and time devoted to watching Charade.

electronico6, The Double Life of Veronique will leave you thinking about it for a while.

Ghost World was about what I expected. Characters who think they're too cool for school, but really just aren't interesting enough to have any friends. Hating everything doesn't make you interesting, it makes you mopey and boring, and at least one of the characters realizes this by the end of the film. I feel the same way about this as I do about Juno: it could have been a lot better if it had eased up on the quirk a bit. Still, it grew on me as it went along, and Steve Buscemi shows that he has some wonderful acting ability to go along with his good looks. 3.5/5

I haven't seen any of the movies on your list but this is the one I most want to see so you get it!

Black Narcissus is beautiful. I can't believe it came out in 1947, the blu-ray transfer on the Criterion disc is unreal. The most surprising thing for me was that a story about a convent in the mountains was compelling and intense. I tried to keep an open mind and I'm glad I did because my high school self from ten years ago would have sneered at it. It gets top marks for the visuals but there is a deep study into the reasons for gaining and losing faith that I think will resonate with most people who have grown up with a heavy religious presence in their lives or at one point had felt pressure to be more "one with God" or something like that. Great intro to Powell and Pressburger. Where some might be turned off by the theatrical nature of the performances I think it gives the movie a unique breath of air it otherwise would have lacked.

LIST O SHAME:

1) The Last Detail - Swearing sailors sounds superb.

2) The Last Picture Show - Going to keep watching the America Lost and Found Box Set.

3)The Sting - Another from the file of heard about for years, been told mostly good things, but never saw it.

4) Bronson - Just saw Drive, loved it, must see more by Refn.

5) Black Moon - Drawn in by various cover art for years. No idea what it's about.

6)Precious – Most recent BP nominee I haven’t seen.

7)Lawrence of Arabia – Highest in IMDB top 250 I haven’t seen

8)The Rules of the Game - It's so high regarded and yet I know nothing about it.

9)The Company of Wolves - Friend of mine lent me this some time ago, he tells me it's really good.

10)A Woman is a Woman - A little more Godard would be nice.

Ratedargh: I've only seen "Lawrence of Arabia" on your list, but enjoyed it when I watched it earlier in this thread, so enjoy.

I watched "The Killing" today, and though I wouldn't call myself a huge "Kubrick fan", he's been starting to grow on me, and this movie really help to nudge me along further in my respect for the director. The movie was fantastic. Very well done, very exciting, and just a completely solid movie. I rented the Criterion from my library, so also watch "Killer's Kiss", and it's amazing the leap he made from "Killer's Kiss", which is a pretty average and not too great movie, to the fantastic and really well done "The Killing".

My new list:

1. 8 1/2:
Watched the first 5 minutes, and turned it off for some reason, I think I wasn't in the right mood that night.

2. The Lives of Others:
I have never heard of it before, but it appears to have a high rating on IMDB.

3. The Hustler:
More Paul Newman

4. City Lights:
More Chaplin

5. Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf:
Have no knowledge of this one.

6. Gandhi:
Never got around to it

7. In Bruges:
I know nothing about this, but it seems to be highly rated.

8. The Deer Hunter:
Just never saw it

9. Ben Hur:
Another long epic I'm afraid of

10. Barry Lyndon:
Another Kubrick I have never seen

Already watched: Jaws, Scenes From a Marriage, The Searchers, Fanny and Alexander, Sawdust and Tinsel, Stagecoach, Silence of the Lambs, Modern Times, Do the Right Thing, Schindler's List, Mr Smith Goes to Washington, Magnolia, La Strada, Die Hard, Persona, Aliens, The Great Escape, Cool Hand Luke, 400 Blows, Lawrence of Arabia, The Treasure of Sierra Madre, Network, The Great Dictator, The Elephant Man, To Kill a Mockingbird, Amadeus, The Big Sleep, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Killing

I am the math man.

zandert33, this is your chance to find out what Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf is all about.

loving hell, it's been a long two months for me. Life is abit more settled now, and I got around to watching Riget. I was a little disappointed. Maybe my expectations were too high, maybe the long layoff from regular film watching made it harder to really appreciate the uniqueness of this miniseries, but most likely this just isn't the kind of thing I want to watch. It certainly wasn't bad, I found the setting and most of the characters really interesting, but the incongruous tone and odd pacing made for stretches, especially in the middle two episodes where I just didn't give a gently caress. When things came together in the last episode my feelings improved but I still hung on to my dislike for the old lady who takes too much of a central role in everything. I much preferred the character interactions and the comedy that relies on the inherent creepiness of the gigantic hospital of endless corridors than the more in your face supernatural horror that increasingly takes center stage. Oh well. I'll probably check out the sequel but I get the feeling it'll be about the same.

Updated list:

Possession Not sure why I have this on my need to see list actually. Maybe someone here recommended it? Seems like it could be brilliant or terrible.

The Wind Will Carry Us The last Kiarostami movie I saw, Ten, really soured me on the guy, but considering I've liked his other features there's no reason not to give this a shot.

Seven Beauties Never seen a Lina Wertmüller, this one seems to be the most highly regarded, though if anyone think I should watch Love and Anarchy or The Seduction of Mimi instead I'm fine with that.

Blackmail Hitchcock, it's been a while. There's both a sound version and a silent version. I'm not sure which I should watch, or if both which I should watch first.

Twelve O'Clock High Gregory Peck WWII film.

I Live in Fear I actually tried watching this once but kept drifting asleep, no fault of the film though. I know how it starts and ends but the middle is a messy blur.

Twenty-Four Eyes Never seen a Kinoshita film. Seems like the place to start.

The Only Son Let's watch some more Ozu.

Red Angel Criticker says I'll love it and I've never seen a Masumura film.

The Singing Detective Another mini series. Fits in with this noir thing I've been doing.

The Wind Will Carry Us The last Kiarostami movie I saw, Ten, really soured me on the guy, but considering I've liked his other features there's no reason not to give this a shot.

I watched this when I was 14 and hated it, which probably means it's actually pretty good.

The Apartment: Everything works so well that I'm having a hard time figuring out why it didn't feel more than simply adequate to me. I think it pertains to relativity. Everything is really good, but everyone involved has done better, both on a comedic and dramatic level. The classical B&W cinematography paints a busy, somewhat frightening Manhattan, contrasting Baxter's apartment (making sense of the fact that everyone might want to be there) and is easily the film's highlight. What can be said for certain is that its politics are absurdly ahead of its time, and more than likely very influential. 70/100

9. Winter Light: Back to Bergman.

10. Red River: I'm pretty sure I've seen this, but I was probably 6 or 7 and don't remember a thing about it.

What the hell, I'll just eat some trash.

Yeah, The Hangover's pretty solid. It's Dude Where's My Car with Tyson and that's all right by me. Galafinakas is good, Helms is better than I was expecting, and Cooper's best of all. He pretty. The asian accent jokes were a little uncomfortable, though.

Kull the Conquerer just go ahead and queue up Shane.

Billy Liar I own it in that 10 Year of Rialto set, but it just ain't gonna happen without a push.

new: The Earrings of Madame De... I really haven't seen enough Ophuls.

Haven't seen any of your 10.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets - This was silly and amusing at times. Harry Potter is one of the few people his age who wants to go to school it seems.

With all that Potter has done through the first two movies he should be put on the staff at this point. He's accomplished more victories in two films than all the bumbling faculty put together (do they ever do anything in the series)? I'm finding the rivalry betwen the Slytherin to be forced and boring. Every time I see a scene with Harry and Draco it feels like a parody of a Top Gun scene between Maverick and Iceman.

Dobby seems like a reject Gollum.
Hermione the cat was humorous.
Gilderoy is a doofus.

#230 Children of Men - Another newer one I haven't gotten around to yet. Don't know anything about it really. 9/17/11

new #231 Roman Holiday - Heard it referenced a TON but never seen it. 9/22/11

Viridiana

At times messy but mostly an enjoyably atmospheric stab at a handful of subjects. I've seen the main theme somewhere before (people usually take advantage of charity), but never so crassly skewed as it is here. Buñuel, as usual, manages to make the most of any slight hint of uneasiness, twisting it fiendishly, often threading in black humor. The paupers' feast is a masterpiece sequence unto itself (topped by a glorious moment of tableaux vivant), and the assault at the end is impossibly gut-wrenching. Not my favorite Buñuel but pretty darn good.

7.5/10

SHAAAAAAME

1) The Exterminating Angel - A long time ago I rented Discreet Charm, thinking it was this, and I never got around to actually seeing the film I'd intended to in the first place.

2) Hiroshima mon amour - I was perplexed by but really loved Last Year At Marienbad. I'm not really sure what this is about but it's the most interesting-looking movie next on TSPDT.

3) L'Atalante - I honestly don't know anything about this but man, number 14 on TSPDT must mean something.

4) I Know Where I'm Going! - gently caress me, I've rented this like four times and for some reason I never watch it, which is retarded because I love Powell and Pressburger.

5) The Seven Samurai - SUPER-ULTRA SHAME! I don't like samurai films. I was also waiting to get the Blu-Ray but pfeh, looks like that's not gonna happen for a while and I guess I can get by with the DVD.

6) Vivre sa vie - Replacing a new-wave with a new-wave, this is another meant-to-never-saw. Great that it's on Blu now. I think I skipped this one for A Woman Is A Woman when they were doing a Godard retrospective at SIFF.

7) Baraka - Put it on Netflix queue after seeing Koyaanisqatsi, never got it up to the top three because half of my dogged devotion to Koyetc is the Philip Glass score and the theme about industrialization. But apparently it's like mindblowingly cool or something I dunno.

8) Bringing Up Baby - My film professor told me to watch this once and I didn't for some reason. Apparently it has Cary Grant and a baby tiger?

9) The Princess Bride - I do not think this quote means what I think it means.

10) The Magic Flute - This has been in my Netflix since I was like 13. I love this opera and I love Ingmar Bergman.

Jules et Jim 6/10, Saving Private Ryan 9.5/10, Fitzcarraldo 9/10, The 39 Steps 7/10, Notorious 7/10, Run Lola Run 8/10, Downfall 7.5/10, The Searchers 7.5/10, Tokyo Story 7/10, Gone With The Wind 10/10, Touch Of Evil 9.5/10, Ikiru 7.5/10, The Apartment 7/10, Bicycle Thieves 7/10, Moon 7/10, The Color Purple 7.5/10. I am the math man.

Magic Hate Ball, it's time for another Buñuel, The Exterminating Angel.

The Wind Will Carry Us is the kind of Kiarostami I like, but I have to admit I was never fully engaged, mostly for reasons independent of the film. Even though there's always something going on there's a restlessness to the film that translated to me as the viewer, leading my mind to wander from time to time. Even so it's an interesting meditation on rural life and a few of the repeated ideas, most notable that drat cellphone, were quite effective. I can't imagine what would compel a 14 year old to watch this, though.

Updated list:

Possession Not sure why I have this on my need to see list actually. Maybe someone here recommended it? Seems like it could be brilliant or terrible.

The Bridges of Madison County Why is this on the TSPDT list?

See, at 14 I would have told them no thanks and gone off to play video games or sleep or something. It's really the kind of film where you have to be willing to read between the cultural lines and appreciate the little things that are said and done, or left unsaid and undone.

PA, clear up the middle of I Live in Fear

Contempt was my first real disappointment from Godard. I think because it was far too serious, and he works best when the whimsy of the material matches the playfulness of his visual style. He still had some nice visual touches here, but it wasn't backed up by much. Far too much time was spent on a boring and repetitive argument between Piccoli and Bardot, and not enough time on the film within the film (with Fritz Lang!). 3.5/5

TenSpadesBeTrump- You get Ambersons. Watch it, enjoy Welles' genius, and then see how disjointed the end is from the rest of the film. Then become sad about what could have been.

Did not like "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf". Two hours of drunk unappealing people talking is not what I consider a good film. Pretty much every character annoyed me, and I felt no connection to any of them. I have never seen an Elizabeth Taylor movie, and I thought she did very well. I can enjoy the style of film, but in this instance I didn't like it at all.

My new list:

1. 8 1/2:
Watched the first 5 minutes, and turned it off for some reason, I think I wasn't in the right mood that night.

2. The Lives of Others:
I have never heard of it before, but it appears to have a high rating on IMDB.

3. The Hustler:
More Paul Newman

4. City Lights:
More Chaplin

5. All About Eve:
Have no knowledge of this one.

6. Gandhi:
Never got around to it

7. In Bruges:
I know nothing about this, but it seems to be highly rated.

8. The Deer Hunter:
Just never saw it

9. Ben Hur:
Another long epic I'm afraid of

10. Barry Lyndon:
Another Kubrick I have never seen

Already watched: Jaws, Scenes From a Marriage, The Searchers, Fanny and Alexander, Sawdust and Tinsel, Stagecoach, Silence of the Lambs, Modern Times, Do the Right Thing, Schindler's List, Mr Smith Goes to Washington, Magnolia, La Strada, Die Hard, Persona, Aliens, The Great Escape, Cool Hand Luke, 400 Blows, Lawrence of Arabia, The Treasure of Sierra Madre, Network, The Great Dictator, The Elephant Man, To Kill a Mockingbird, Amadeus, The Big Sleep, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Killing, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf

My favourite, from a limited section of viewing, Fellini. Hope you're in the right mood this time.

I watched Lawrence of Arabia in two sittings, though in hindsight the length was never an issue. The pacing is really strong and the cinematography is beautiful enough to get lost in for quite some time. I went in expecting to mildly enjoy it and it was better than that. In the beginning when he dies on his motorcycle, the idealistic great man depicted shortly thereafter had already been dead for some time as evidenced by that massive slaughter of the Turks before reaching Damascus. His defeat came at the hands of not being able to fight the colour of his own skin and his own background. He could never be an Arab but by the end he couldn't be British either. He was a man without a country, without identity and arguably without a soul. The movie ends up being much darker than I was anticipating and it didn't turn until after the intermission.

All that said, it's a really fine movie but I didn't fall in love with it like I have with others. I adore David Lean's Bridge on the River Kwai and I don't think this was nearly as good. Still a strong movie and I'm glad I finally saw it. I imagine seeing it on the big screen would be an exciting experience.

Ratedargh, I hope you like The Sting as much as I do.

The Magnificent Ambersons was magnificent (HEYO). The ending was obviously ridiculous, though. I would have really liked this story if it had been condensed down a bit, and then much more added to the end about the new conditions of the family. Instead their fortunes changed suddenly and drastically, and the movie ends. While some of the acting was a bit over the top, Welles' narration was pitch perfect. 4/5

Welcome to the thread, here's a great movie.

The Sting is a lot of fun. I still don't give a poo poo about Redford, and find him bland in general, but Newman and everything else here is fantastic fun. It stalls a bit in the middle but the payoff more than makes up for any shortcomings. I didn't find it predictable, though after all was said and done I thought that it should have been so obvious but the film does a great job of mixing it up. I, as the viewer, was conned in a way and I loved it.

Fantastic Planet had some good animation and a wealth of creative creature designs. It reminded me of a Dr. Seuss book. For as short as it was, it still ended up dragging a bit, and the ending wraps things up too quickly. 3.5/5

Sanjuro was a good followup to Yojimbo. Not as serious as Yojimbo, with some good comedy moments. Toshiro Mifune was very good. Took a little while to get into the story, but when I did, I was completely engrossed.

My List:
It's a Wonderful Life - This is on every Christmas, and yet I have never seen it.

Best In Show - Lots of people have said that this movie is hysterical, and I could use a good comedy now.

Lawrence of Arabia - I've seen this has been recommended a lot. Haven't seen it yet.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid - Loved Newman and Redford in the Sting, so I am looking forward to seeing this.

Monty Python's The Meaning of Life - Only Monty Python movie I've seen is The Holy Grail. I am very interested in seeing the other ones.

Cars - Only Pixar movie that I haven't seen.

The Hidden Fortress - This was originally going to be my foreign movie slot, but Kurosawa is quickly dominating it. Every time I see one of his movies, I can't wait to see the next one.

My Fair Lady - I'm going to stick with musicals in this spot.

Dracula - Never saw any of the classic Hollywood horror movies, but now that I've gotten interested in Bela Lugosi (through the Ed Wood pictures), this seems like the natural first pick.

The Public Enemy - Never saw any James Cagney film.

Movies Seen: Seven Samurai, Dune, Singin' in the Rain, Animal Crackers, Once Upon a Time in the West, Amadeus, Double Indemnity, The Day the Earth Stood Still, 12 Angry Men, Ed Wood, Sunset Boulevard, The Dark Knight, Plan 9 From Outer Space, Brazil, Rashomon, Yojimbo, No Country For Old Men, There Will Be Blood, M, Duck Soup, The Princess and the Frog, Sanjuro

TenSpadesBeTrump, I've been thinking about adding a few Chaplin movies to my list, so you get to preview The Kid for me.

What the hell, I'll just eat some trash.

Body Heat is fun. It feels like dress-up - like it's just wrapped in how cool noir is - which works for me. Turner is terrific, Hurt's alright. It's no Chinatown, but it's better than poo poo like Brick.

Dmitri Russkie, the presence of Dracula on your list is so frustrating because if it was literally any other classic monster movie I'd recommend it, but Dracula is loving terrible. Therefore, enjoy The Hidden Fortress, which is no Seven Samurai, but a lot of fun.

The Earrings of Madame De... I really haven't seen enough Ophuls.

The Mystery of Picasso I like Picasso and I like Clouzot. Let's do it.

Toto, Peppino e la malafemmina Italian comedy doesn't do it for me, but Terrence Malick of all people loves this one. Certainly worth a try.

new: Short Cuts I think I'd really like this, but I always forget about it.

Montenegro or Sweet Movie I loved WR and the Eclipse set, but I've avoided Sweet Movie because I heard it sucks and Montenegro because the poster is crap.

Barfly I'm a big Bukowski fan which, actually, is why I keep avoiding this.

I am the math man.

penismightier, Body Heat is better than Chinatown. You know what else is better than Chinatown? Night Moves, enjoy.

I Live in Fear is a good film, but it lacks the intensity the material requires. What starts off as an intense family struggle spurred by fears of the atomic age turns into a slow boiling descent into eccentricity that heavyhandedly smashes its point home again and again. The atomic bomb can destroy the world, fear is justified, but can we let ourselves be paralyzed by it? It's a film structured to be ripe for examination but falters when it comes to making one want to examine it. I think my issues are more disappointment with the film's inability to capitalize on its obvious potential. What's there is good, but could have been much more.

Updated list:

Possession Not sure why I have this on my need to see list actually. Maybe someone here recommended it? Seems like it could be brilliant or terrible.

The Bridges of Madison County Why is this on the TSPDT list?

The Limey Another one I've seen but can't remember anything about.

Peaceful Anarchy posted:

Red Angel Criticker says I'll love it and I've never seen a Masumura film.

I haven't seen any of your ten. But you already know that heh.

Manhattan - This was okay but it didn't make me laugh too much. Whereas, Annie Hall had dozens of memorable quotes I can't really pick out any in this. And this has to be the fourth of fifth Keaton/Allen pairing I've seen. Maybe I'm growing tired of the tandem. I didn't get into the relationship issues at all really either.

My favorite parts were of the NYC shots which were most common at the beginning and the end of the film.

#230 Children of Men - Another newer one I haven't gotten around to yet. Don't know anything about it really. 9/17/11

#231 Roman Holiday - Heard it referenced a TON but never seen it. 9/22/11

new #235 Rope - I haven't checked but Hitchcock may have the most directorial appearances on the IMDb 250. 9/28/11

Zogo, watch Children of Men.

The Kid isn't one of Chaplin's best comedies, but there is still plenty to enjoy, especially Jackie Coogan as the kid. There were some funny bits and some sweet moments, but overall can't compare to his other films. 3.5/5

71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance

The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser
The Enigma of Bruno S.

Don't know anything about this.
Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives
Heard a lot about this, I feel like I'll love it or hate it.
Still Life
Next on TSPDT's 21st Century list. Don't know anything about it.
Intolerance
Next on TSPDT. UGH I don't think I'll like this one.

If Holy Mountain or El Topo are better introductions to Jodorowsky, feel free to assign those.

More movies I've never heard of. d10 roll says: Santa Sangre

It took me a while to get around to Nashville, but I just finished it. I'm honestly not quite sure what to think. It was billed as a satire about the intersection of country music and conservative politics, but it was a rather toothless satire. I was expecting something more like Bob Roberts, I guess. Still, it was a good movie, but I'm not quite sure if it was trying to make any sort of point or just showing a slice of life in Nashville. The political campaign was always going on it the background, but it didn't have much direct influence on the plot. Or maybe it did, and I just missed some of the details. Certainly there was a lot going on. In these "cast of thousands" movies it's always hard to keep up with all of the subplots (I said similar things about The Godfather a few pages back). I'm being awfully negative, but I really did like the movie. All the characters were interesting in their own way, and the music was gorgeous. I was hoping there'd be a few cameos by some real country musicians, but the main characters were very good singers nonetheless. There was a lot of humor in the background, and I'm not sure I got all of it. It really felt like we were looking into a whole world and not just watching a story. My favorite comic character was the somewhat clueless British reporter, and my favorite dramatic one was probably Lily Tomlin's. The movie was rather confusing at times, but it was enjoyable to watch and felt thoroughly authentic. While I don't plan to rewatch it, I get the feeling that there were more layers to this world than what we saw on a first viewing.

Rating: 3.5/4

2. Goodfellas - Just never came up. I know Joe Pesci yells about not being funny for a while, and I remember the Animaniacs parodies, but that's really all I know. But I liked Gangs of New York and Raging Bull [edit: and now Taxi Driver], so I have confidence in Scorsese.

5. 2001: A Space Odyssey - More sci-fi that everyone but me has seen. I think my dad has a copy, so that would make it easier. I think I already know most of the plot, but that doesn't mean I won't enjoy it. If I'm given this one, I promise to try my best not to make too many Portal jokes.

9. The Aviator - More from that Scorsese clown. This one isn't as much a must see as some of the others, but it's added shame because it's another one that I own but haven't seen (there's probably another five movies like that, but most of them are more obscure). I bought it for three bucks about four years ago when a local video store went out of business and I've never taken it out of the box.

12. Superman - Not that shameful, but I've seen most of the major superhero movies, and this one's supposed to be the gold standard. I'd probably enjoy it except for Superman reversing time. :bang:

14. Apocalypse Now- Guy goes up a river, sees weird poo poo, the horror, goes back down the river, man is evil. Well, that's how my brother summed up Heart of Darkness, which I tried to read in high school and got to about page three. But I know this is a fairly loose adaptation and is supposed to be great, and Martin Sheen is awesome, so I'd be cool with this.

16. Schindler's List- Of course, I know what this is about, but I know very few details. My wife has seen it and said she'd watch it with me. Since she usually doesn't like serious movies, this is a strong recommendation indeed.

18. Deer Hunter- I seem to be seeing a lot of Christopher Walken bit parts, so let's see one of his rare starring roles. I started watching this one a while ago, but never got more than a few minutes in- I think I got called away, or maybe I just wasn't in the mood. I do know it ends with death by Russian Roulette, but I still think I'd enjoy it.

19. The Exorcist- My wife and I tried to watch this once, and both of us were just bored. We got about thirty minutes in, and it seemed like nothing happened. I don't ask for horror to be shocking from the get-go; some of my favorite horror (The Descent, Halloween, Paranormal Activity, many of Stephen King's better works, like Salem's Lot or Pet Sematary) start slow and take a while to build up, and the horror is more effective for it. I would have expected to see some creepy foreshadowing, though, or at least get me interested in the characters, but I don't remember anything remotely interesting happening. Maybe it does get better, but after half an hour, something should have sucked me in. Should I give it another try?

20. The Seventh Seal- Never seen any Bergman- like Kurosawa, it seems I'd have to go out of my way, even though I've heard lots about him. I know this is the one where the guy plays chess with death to save his soul (I once read a parody of this by Woody Allen, where a guy plays Gin Rummy with death to save his soul). That's about all I know, but I hope the chess game opens with 1. e4 c5, so I can point out that you should never go up against a Sicilian when death is on the line.

22. A Face in the Crowd- Andy Griffith is Glenn Beck! Like I said earlier, the character sounds somewhat simplistic, but the clips I've seen look good, so I'd like to see how it works. Sounds like something I could watch with my dad, and maybe some others.

Okay, tell me what I’m watching!
