Durrr - I apparently forgot to post the link to my autofire-restored tweak. Also, if you want to replace the taunt sound, it's pretty simple. Just rename the PK3 files to .ZIPs, open them up in windows explorer, and replace Sounds\Taunt.OGG in V12 with the one from V11. Not so sure about the splash-screen music.

I've taken part in way too many of these sorts of groups that fade after a few weeks or never take off at all across a number of different communities and it is tearing my heart in two. I know this was a few pages back, but did this go anywhere? I practically grew up on 2.5D shooters, and got my multiplayer chops in Quake II, so I would love to get in a group for some classic gaming. I've got the id megapack on Steam, and all my old discs for things like Duke Nukem 3D. I think a Steam group would be the easiest, if most people are on there.

Because I can, I decided to start doing a series of videos on youtube - I'll annotate it for greater information and clarity later, but for now, here's Doom Done Different: Brutal Doom + ZPack (Part 1) for y'all to watch, and laugh at as I almost die about a dozen times. Managed to do three levels in one take, though.

I ran a BrutalDoom + Zpack server for a little while and it was a great time. Definitely one of the most successful Skulltag setups I've hosted. Some of the later maps had more monsters than my rig could handle, though. I'll probably bring it back on the media server once it's built. They're some really interesting maps, too, and the definitely lend well to the sort of action movie vibe Brutal Doom gives off.

Thanks for exposing me to ZPack, though. It's seriously an awesome map pack, though you aren't kidding about the difficulty. I got to the third map without dying before succumbing to some bullshit acid trap (not counting the 9 or 10 times I died in Map 1 before getting on a roll.)

There's a reason why I didn't pick Ultra-violence for my video. Like a lot of modern Doom mods, it treats the difficulty options as Easy/Normal/Hard/Very Hard/Impossible.

I'm usually pretty torn on Ultra-Violence and Hurt Me Plenty when it comes to Brutal Doom and user-made WADs. Some of them give a wonderful challenge on UV for 10 or 12 maps before suddenly hitting a brick wall of difficulty (like Scythe's map, "Anger", which feels impossible with Brutal Doom and UV.) Others are a perfect challenge on UV. You're right, though. ZPack...ZPack is not one of those WADs. EDIT: Dominic, do you have an issue with Brutal Doom causing enemy spawns to be inconsistent? For example, on the first ZPack map, you pick up the blue key and a bunch of Zombies and Imps teleport in behind you. With Brutal Doom, sometimes they spawn in, sometimes they don't, sometimes only a few of them do. And it's only with Brutal Doom.

I'm pretty sure it's because of the way Brutal Doom changes monster movement and height movement ability in combination with the way that teleport is designed to work. Monsters don't "spawn" in Doom, they teleport from separate, inaccessible areas of the map. All in all, I think it tends to make things more unpredictable and interesting (also outright loving you like in E4M2). I also think Z-Pack is great to play on Nightmare with BrutalDoom, largely because only custom enemies will respawn, being the only ones unaffected by BrutalDoom. It adds to some of the unpredictability and can make them a bit more of a threat because--comparatively--they're much easier than the faster/more aggro BrutalDoom monsters, especially with the increased shotgun pellets. Just watch out for Rocket Zombies. Holy poo poo. treat fucked around with this message at 22:05 on Sep 29, 2011 |

I have joined the steam group as well. I would be up for HL1 mods, quake mods, doom mods, really anything. I sometimes host events in my community, so if you need help, let me know. We are going to need something like vent for games that don't have microphone capability. If we get enough people I would definitely organize something. If you want to make me an admin I can start posting some events. HL1 mods still on the list, or should we do old to new?

The point is really just to give people a chance to enjoy multiplayer games with stagnant or non-existent communities. Even focusing on under-represented aspects of games that are still somewhat popular is alright by me.

Well, anyone wanting to participate I encourage you to install skulltag if you don't have it, and any game mods you can think of. Obviously we'll announce which mods or games we want to play in advance. A lot of things are made easier by steam, like Half-Life stuff. Quake we could pull off, but I'd say we stay away from too many mods for it. Unless you guys really want to play quake fortress in a bad way. Either Doom co-op(and/or heretic/hexen, etc.), or Half-Life mods to start. It would be a lot of fun to get 10 guys to play The Specialists, Wizard Wars, Vampire Slayer or Sven Co-op. Whatever you guys want, I'll post an event and I'll show up.

^^^ Renting a server would be more of a pain in the rear end than it's worth, what with switching between so many games and mods. A lot of hosting companies don't always play nice/won't host obscure and dead mods, either. Otherwise, I have a friend with a powerful box/connection who may give a hand. UV is awesome and how I try to always play. ESPECIALLY on co-op. Some maps, though, really really punish you. Like it seems nigh impossible. Mostly, it's not!
|

You should be good played Doom 2 on UV. Like Kazvall says, there are some difficult maps, but nothing impossible. The only problem comes from user-made Megawads where the author makes an arbitrary leap in difficulty between HMP and UV difficulties.

Minidust posted:What's the general opinion on Doom II as far as this goes? I just started a playthrough with Brutal Doom on UV. I feel like I'm playing a little too carefully and wondering if Hurt Me Plenty is a better fit with this mod. For reference, I'm just coming off an unmodded UV playthrough of Doom 1 Eps 1-4. I've played through Doom II multiple times on Ultra-Violence and I got to about level 11 using Brutal Doom - just haven't had a chance to play since. If you're an experienced Doomer, you'll be OK - it is significantly tougher than Ultra-Violence (more like Hell Revealed's tougher levels) because the monsters are so much faster, take more damage (do they or am I wrong there?) and most of all - they're much more aggressive. You also take more damage, I think, but not sure. It is very entertainingly gory and it really transforms old school Doom II for me - I'm not used to the monsters being this difficult even on Ultra-Violence.
