2. Goodfellas - Just never came up. I know Joe Pesci yells about not being funny for a while, and I remember the Animaniacs parodies, but that's really all I know. But I liked Gangs of New York and Raging Bull [edit: and now Taxi Driver], so I have confidence in Scorsese.

No director alive, I feel can quite convey a "feel" like Scorsese.

I can't comment on Raging Bull, and Gangs fell a bit short , but Taxi Driver and Goodfellas is on my very short 5/5 list.

By all means,go watch Goodfellas

Goodfellas doesn't disappoint.

The Double Life of Veronique might be one of the most gorgeous films I ever seen, there's just something about that dreamlike imagery and I just got lost in it. Don't ask me what it was about, it's metaphysical inclinations just went right by me, the cinematography, the music and Irene Jacob made it for me. I was quite captivated by them, I stopped trying to look for a deeper meaning and just take in the fairly unique experience. A second viewing will, no doubt change that, and I'll be on the look out for more visual cues and such. On retrospective I probably should have picked some other film to start with Kieslowski, but I don't regret going with this one now.

Electronico, watch Ace in the Hole.

The last half hour or so of Santa Sangre was magnificent, once the hallucinations became more frequent. I loved the irony of the final shot. This wasn't as surreal or incomprehensible as I was expecting, which is kind of disappointing. 4/5

TenSpadesBeTrump- I'm very happy to give you Pather Panchali, as it's a fantastic start to an amazing trilogy of movies.

Watched 8 1/2. It's not my favorite Fellini, but I did think it was quite interesting, and there are some parts that I really liked a lot, on the whole though I didn't love it though.

My new list:

1. Rosemary's Baby: Been watching some Cassavetes' movies lately, but I've never seen a movie he's starred in.

2. The Lives of Others:
I have never heard of it before, but it appears to have a high rating on IMDB.

3. The Hustler:
More Paul Newman

4. City Lights:
More Chaplin

5. All About Eve:
Have no knowledge of this one.

6. Gandhi:
Never got around to it

7. In Bruges:
I know nothing about this, but it seems to be highly rated.

8. The Deer Hunter:
Just never saw it

9. Ben Hur:
Another long epic I'm afraid of

10. Barry Lyndon:
Another Kubrick I have never seen

Already watched: Jaws, Scenes From a Marriage, The Searchers, Fanny and Alexander, Sawdust and Tinsel, Stagecoach, Silence of the Lambs, Modern Times, Do the Right Thing, Schindler's List, Mr Smith Goes to Washington, Magnolia, La Strada, Die Hard, Persona, Aliens, The Great Escape, Cool Hand Luke, 400 Blows, Lawrence of Arabia, The Treasure of Sierra Madre, Network, The Great Dictator, The Elephant Man, To Kill a Mockingbird, Amadeus, The Big Sleep, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Killing, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf

He's actually not that much in it.

Ace in the Hole is a very cynical look into the journalism, though torwards the end it slided into silliness. Maybe silliness is the wrong word, but it gets quite over the top later on. So when Kirk Doulgas says "The circus is over", not only his referring in the metaphorical sense, but the literal one too, as there was a real circus on the grounds. It was all a bit to much.

Still great film, with a very good Kirk Douglas and the wonderful Wilder dialog. Makes a fine companion to Sweet Smell of Success.

It has been a couple months but I've finally seen The Maltese Falcon and a few other movies from my list. I can definitely see why the film noir is considered a classic. John Huston's directorial debut encompassed a lot of the themes and stylistic touches that would come to define the genre. Humphrey Bogart led an excellent cast, and I thought the ending was masterful, in terms of Mary Astor's character and the true nature of the statuette.

New list:

The Grapes of Wrath Just essential (maybe not as much as the novel, which I haven't gotten to either)

The Naked City Always seeking more film noir

Dial M for Murder Hitchcock has a long list of classics; I continue my journey

Bob Le Flambeur Taking it back to one of Melville's earlier successes

The Leopard Going into this movie blind, I have to admit it looks pretty dry.

Duck, You Sucker! Guess I ought to see the middle installment in Leone's trilogy

Hud Been building up to this from other westerns and gaining an appreciation for Paul Newman

Prince of the City Epic-length crime film, and the last Lumet I'm waiting to see

Amadeus I wouldn't choose this movie for myself, but it has significant acclaim behind it

Bugsy Another gangster movie with a Morricone soundtrack

I am the math man.

Budhisattva watch The Grapes of Wrath.

Red Angel was a very good film whose impact is probably dampened a bit by it's age but which mostly remains pretty effective. The story is set during WWII but rather than following the soldiers it follows a nurse who witnesses endless suffering and some pretty assholish soldiers. While it very conspicuously avoids showing boobies it does every thing but and has no qualms showing some rather graphic violence. If you're looking for a truly antiwar movie this is pretty effective. I can't imagine it having gone over well in Japan, even in 1966.

Updated list:

Possession Not sure why I have this on my need to see list actually. Maybe someone here recommended it? Seems like it could be brilliant or terrible.

Seven Beauties Never seen a Lina Wertmüller, this one seems to be the most highly regarded, though if anyone think I should watch Love and Anarchy or The Seduction of Mimi instead I'm fine with that.

Blackmail Hitchcock, it's been a while. There's both a sound version and a silent version. I'm not sure which I should watch, or if both which I should watch first.

Twelve O'Clock High Gregory Peck WWII film.

Twenty-Four Eyes Never seen a Kinoshita film. Seems like the place to start.

The Only Son Let's watch some more Ozu.

The Singing Detective Another mini series. Fits in with this noir thing I've been doing.

The Bridges of Madison County Why is this on the TSPDT list?

The Limey Another one I've seen but can't remember anything about.

The Unbearable Lightness of Being One of the very few movies I've started and not finished. The cinematography and acting were good but I just didn't give a drat about any of it. It's been like 6 years though, so maybe it's time to give it another go.

Besides the scenes with Jack Nicholson, Easy Rider was not very good. Pains to say but, I was bored with it and those 90 minutes felt a lot longer. Nice soundtrack though, and really, I think this is the film that made me realize just how amazing an actor Jack Nicholson really is. He just pops out of nowhere and shows Hopper and Fonda how it's done. Then he goes away and we are left with the two most boring bikers ever.

Children of Men - Pretty good movie. Some of the battle scenes/skirmishes were ochestrated really well. Makes you feel like you're in the middle of a civil war. I really had no clue where the story was going to go so that's always a plus as well.

It was almost a little too bleak.

I believe this is the 100th film I've watched because of this thread.

IMDb list:

#178 The Bourne Ultimatum - The first two in the series were good. 8/17/11

#195 Mary and Max - Never heard of it. I just looked it up and it's about clay people. Hopefully it lives up to Gumby's standard. 6/22/11

#212 The Passion of Joan of Arc - Vampyr had some interesting things in it so maybe this will too. 7/21/11

#219 Howl's Moving Castle - I liked Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke but My Neighbor Totoro was a little too childish for me. 8/25/11

#222 Mystic River - I vaguely remember seeing this reviewed. Something about a trial gone awry? 8/9/11

#223 Let the Right One In - Newer release about vampires. Hopefully better than the Twilight saga. 8/6/11

#228 Infernal Affairs - If Jack Nicholson's role in The Departed was based on a predecessor in this I'll probably like it. 8/25/11

#231 Roman Holiday - Heard it referenced a TON but never seen it. 9/22/11

#235 Rope - I haven't checked but Hitchcock may have the most directorial appearances on the IMDb 250. 9/28/11

new #237 The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance - I think I have a VHS of this somewhere but I never got around to it. Over the years I've inherited a ton of ancient VHS tapes from various relatives. But nearly all of them are fullscreen obviously so I should probably junk them. Grandparents had a real old satellite dish that picked up EVERYthing and they taped like mad throughout the 80s. 10/4/11

Zogo, watch The Man who Shot Liberty Valance.

Pather Panchali was touching, and the characters were well drawn. It seems simplistic on the surface, but almost every scene is filled with meaning. I didn't end up liking it as much as I had hoped, but I'm still very much looking forward to the rest of the trilogy. 4/5

What the hell, I'll just eat some trash.

Night Moves might be the best neo-noir I've ever seen. My boy Gene is in fine form here, and the script crackles in a way so many others wish they did. It also moves at a terrific clip - it doesn't have those awkward sluggish moments so many of these movies do. Good stuff, good stuff.

TenSpadesBeTrump, enjoy The Engima of Kasper Hauser, from back when Herzog actually WAS as good as he thinks he is.

New list:

Mike's Murder I don't know enough '80s dramas, and I heard this is a hidden classic crime movie. But the same person who told me that said the same about 8 Million Ways to Die, which is dick.

Beware of a Holy Whore Cult Fassbinder hit?

new: Hana-bi I like Kitano.

Billy Liar I own it in that 10 Year of Rialto set, but it just ain't gonna happen without a push.

The Earrings of Madame De... I really haven't seen enough Ophuls.

The Mystery of Picasso I like Picasso and I like Clouzot. Let's do it.

Toto, Peppino e la malafemmina Italian comedy doesn't do it for me, but Terrence Malick of all people loves this one. Certainly worth a try.

Short Cuts I think I'd really like this, but I always forget about it.

Montenegro or Sweet Movie I loved WR and the Eclipse set, but I've avoided Sweet Movie because I heard it sucks and Montenegro because the poster is crap.

Barfly I'm a big Bukowski fan which, actually, is why I keep avoiding this.

penismightier, you get The Earrings of Madame de....

Three Colors: White was very good. It caught me off-guard with it's humor, which ends up being the most important and striking part of the film. Karol's arc is fairly bleak on paper (and, in some ways, the film itself), but the humor breaks it up nicely and allows the film to be very much in the tradition of classic screwball comedy rather than being a solemn story of revenge. The ending is beautiful and sad and puts everything into perspective while making the film--humor and all--a greatly bittersweet experience. Overall, a quick, beautiful, and entertaining film.

Just pour it directly into your gaping mouth-hole you decadent slut
My trusty d10 says to watch Red River.

Goodfellas was excellent (parts of it made me hungry- the cooking looked like something off Food Network). Scorsese is now on my list of favorite directors. I was watching for a couple of the key scenes. The “how am I funny?” scene wasn’t as significant as I thought it would be, but it does help set up Tommy (his name was Devito? That’s funny, given that I always used to get Pesci mixed up with Danny DeVito) as unpredictable and dangerous. I was also looking for the famous continuous shot tour of the restaurant. I know which one they mean, but there were actually a lot of similar scenes. Scorsese relied a lot on the slow camera pan. The film had the feel of guiding you on a tour of the underworld, which of course was the point. The plot was very fast-moving and twisted, but it wasn’t as important as the characters. I liked how Karen wasn’t just the naïve, trusting wife like in The Godfather- she clearly knew what Henry was into early on, but thought it was worth it. She was as seduced by the life as he was. That’s why the breakdown at the end, with them crying in the corner, was so incredibly powerful. They both were facing the consequences of their choices, but you still couldn’t help but feel sorry for them. Similarly, while Tommy deserved to die, DeNiro’s crying over him was so convincing I actually felt bad for him. Towards the end, Henry kept saying “my plan was…” usually following up with something complicated and hard to understand. What I liked, though, was that it didn’t matter what exactly he was trying to do. What mattered was the frantic way he said it. You got that he was trying desperately to hold together the shattered pieces of his life, even if you didn’t fully understand exactly how he was trying to accomplish it. This movie-watching club has taught me something about the importance of good actors- relying on a written plot alone to propel the story can make it hard to get invested, but a good actor can make you care about the emotional side of things regardless of whether the plot works. I’m not saying the plot didn’t work, just that at times it moved so fast I missed some aspects, but since the characters cared about it, I cared along with them. One oddity- maybe it’s just me, but I thought Ray Liotta in this movie looked exactly like Leonardo DiCaprio. Given that DiCaprio is now one of Scorsese’s favorite actors- well, it’s just a little strange.

Rating: 4/4

5. 2001: A Space Odyssey - More sci-fi that everyone but me has seen. I think my dad has a copy, so that would make it easier. I think I already know most of the plot, but that doesn't mean I won't enjoy it. If I'm given this one, I promise to try my best not to make too many Portal jokes.

9. The Aviator - More from that Scorsese clown. This one isn't as much a must see as some of the others, but it's added shame because it's another one that I own but haven't seen (there's probably another five movies like that, but most of them are more obscure). I bought it for three bucks about four years ago when a local video store went out of business and I've never taken it out of the box.

12. Superman - Not that shameful, but I've seen most of the major superhero movies, and this one's supposed to be the gold standard. I'd probably enjoy it except for Superman reversing time. :bang:

14. Apocalypse Now- Guy goes up a river, sees weird poo poo, the horror, goes back down the river, man is evil. Well, that's how my brother summed up Heart of Darkness, which I tried to read in high school and got to about page three. But I know this is a fairly loose adaptation and is supposed to be great, and Martin Sheen is awesome, so I'd be cool with this.

16. Schindler's List- Of course, I know what this is about, but I know very few details. My wife has seen it and said she'd watch it with me. Since she usually doesn't like serious movies, this is a strong recommendation indeed.

18. Deer Hunter- I seem to be seeing a lot of Christopher Walken bit parts, so let's see one of his rare starring roles. I started watching this one a while ago, but never got more than a few minutes in- I think I got called away, or maybe I just wasn't in the mood. I do know it ends with death by Russian Roulette, but I still think I'd enjoy it.

19. The Exorcist- My wife and I tried to watch this once, and both of us were just bored. We got about thirty minutes in, and it seemed like nothing happened. I don't ask for horror to be shocking from the get-go; some of my favorite horror (The Descent, Halloween, Paranormal Activity, many of Stephen King's better works, like Salem's Lot or Pet Sematary) start slow and take a while to build up, and the horror is more effective for it. I would have expected to see some creepy foreshadowing, though, or at least get me interested in the characters, but I don't remember anything remotely interesting happening. Maybe it does get better, but after half an hour, something should have sucked me in. Should I give it another try?

20. The Seventh Seal- Never seen any Bergman- like Kurosawa, it seems I'd have to go out of my way, even though I've heard lots about him. I know this is the one where the guy plays chess with death to save his soul (I once read a parody of this by Woody Allen, where a guy plays Gin Rummy with death to save his soul). That's about all I know, but I hope the chess game opens with 1. e4 c5, so I can point out that you should never go up against a Sicilian when death is on the line.

22. A Face in the Crowd- Andy Griffith is Glenn Beck! Like I said earlier, the character sounds somewhat simplistic, but the clips I've seen look good, so I'd like to see how it works. Sounds like something I could watch with my dad, and maybe some others.

23. More by Kurosawa- Rashomon was the only Kurosawa movie I knew anything about, but I loved it, so I'll take any suggestion for this one. I do know that Seven Samurai was the basis for Magnificent Seven, and Hidden Fortress was sort of the basis for Star Wars, but neither of those tells me whether I should watch them. So which one should I choose next?

Okay, tell me what I’m watching!

Shame relieved: The Godfather: 3.5/4, The Godfather Part II: 4/4, Taxi Driver: 4/4, Casablanca: 4/4, Duck Soup: 2/4, Pulp Fiction: 4/4, Barton Fink: 3.5/4, Annie Hall:3/4, Rashomon: 4/4, Blade Runner: 3.5/4, Chinatown: 4/4, Nashville:3.5/4, Goodfellas: 4/4

23. More by Kurosawa-

Go watch Seven Samurai. It's just purely wonderful.

Anyway, been awhile, but I'm back.

Apocalypse Now… this is certainly not the type of movie I generally tend to go for. It was long, surreal, and had no real character to latch onto. It was by no means an easy experience, but I fully recognize that was likely what Coppola and Milius were going for. I thought the way the film handled Kurtz was pretty well done. I like how he was built up to be something of a god, and then he essentially was… just in a very different sort of way. The acting was pretty solid, but if there was one standalone element that really is noteworthy it was clearly the cinematography. All in all, I’m glad that I can check it off the list, but I doubt I’ll be watching it again.

7.5/10

My New List: (feel free to recommend something a tad more lighthearted this time around :p )

1. How To Train Your Dragon

I avoided this mainly due to being a Pixar loyalist, but it may be nice to step out of my comfort zone a bit. Also, the girlfriend wants to see it, so that’ll be fun.

2. Dr. Strangelove

I know it's kind of a big deal that I haven't seen this but I can sort of justify it as just never really finding Kubrick all that accessible. Also, this is another one of those movies that I watched in my childhood and didn't really take to.

3. *NEW* The Night of the Hunter *NEW*

Seems to be a favorite around here. Generally, I find noir hard to grasp. I'm willing to give the genre another good try though.

4. Raging Bull

I've only recently began enjoying Scorsese's work. I'm still sorta lukewarm on De Niro. I loved him in Taxi Driver and Deer Hunter but I've been severely underwhelmed by pretty much everything else I've seen him in.

5. Unforgiven
Not a whole to say about this other than it’s high up on my flickchart list of movies I haven’t seen. I really don’t like Hackman but I’ve heard he’s good in this so maybe this will turn my opinion around.

6. Close Encounters of the Third Kind

I just saw Super 8 and it made really want to go back and watch more of the old school Spielberg stuff. I hear this doesn't really hold a candle to ET and Jaws, but I want to give it a shot anyhow.

7. Badlands

Haven't seen any Malick yet, and the trailer for the Tree of Life looked really god drat good. I'd like to be exposed to something of his before I check out Tree of Life.

8. The Bicycle Thief

Yeah yeah... I'm sorry world, I haven't seen it yet. I know, I'm a shitbag. Again, I've heard nothing but good things and I know it's a huge classic.

9. Manhattan

My first Woody pick was one of the best I’ve gotten out of this thread, I’ve heard Manhattan is one of his best, definitely looking forward to this one.

10. Citizen Kane

Not really much to say except that I'm probably an rear end in a top hat for even halfway considering myself a film buff without having seen this.

De-Shamed

Yojimbo 7.5/10, Aliens 6.5/10, Brazil 8/10, Cool Hand Luke 9/10, 28 Days Later 6/10, Predator 8/10, Blade Runner 7.5/10,Crimes and Misdemeanors 9/10, Vertigo 7/10, Being There 7.5/10, Psycho 10/10, Apocalypse Now 7.5/10

Chili, time for the obligatory Citizen Kane pick.

Been a while since I've seen a good cattle drive movie! Red River is pretty usual western fare but I mean that in the best way possible. It's an entertaining film, at turns exciting, funny, and even touching. The relationship between Montgomery Clift and John Wayne's characters is about as complex as I ever expect to see in a 40s western, and though John Wayne's arc is a little awkward (he begins as the hero and then gradually becomes crazy until he abruptly takes on the role of "villain", for little reason I can make out other than the film needed an antagonist), it still comes out how you would expect it too. Basically it's just a casual, fun film with hints of darker tones that can be either ignored or embraced to enhance the viewing experience depending on the viewer.

What the hell, I'll just eat some trash.

The Earrings of Madame De... is, predictably, terrific. Ophuls' camerawork is impeccable. He seems to just love the thrill of motion, and his camera never stops exploring. It was James Whaleish in that regard. The story was terrific, very understated but with a nice smack of melodrama. Classy as hell.

PDMChubby, I hope you enjoy Le Samourai.

Dark City is a really good piece of science fiction. Quite flawed and you could probably nitpick it to hell and at some point it gets a bit silly, but it has a core and in that core a very solid idea which is delivered in an intelligent way. Though more than it's philosophical musings on what is to be human, what the film does really well, is convey a really dark(hah!) atmosphere and general creepiness. You just feel on edge all the time, and at the beginning more than the weird pale face dudes walking around, was how unsettling the city looked. There's just something wrong with it the moment you set eyes on it, it wasn't the the exposition dialog later on that made affair look nasty, it was the looks of the city.

Either way it's flawed but it has a lot of good going for it.

Wow, I forgot about this thread completely for a long time, and now all I remember about City of God is that I really, really liked it. I'l probably end up rewatching it since I can't seem to remember much else, but thanks to whoever recommended it.

1. Trafic - I've seen Mr Hulot's Holiday and Playtime, but never this. My grandma's a big fan of Tati, so I really should.

2. The Hustler - I've loved Paul Newman in everything I've seen him in, but this one has escaped me so far.

3. Dark City - Just realized that I've never seen this.

4. Amadeus - It seems like a lot of fun, but the length scared me whenever I've considered watching it.

5. The Departed - I caught a few minutes of this on tv and it just didn't seem like my cup of tea. The only Scorsese I've seen is Taxi Driver, Goodfellas and Shutter Island.

6. Predator - It just feels like I should have seen this, I love 80's action.

7. Punch Drunk Love - This and Hard Eight are the only P T Anderson movies I haven't seen.

8. Modern Times - I loved The Great Dictator, so I don't know why I haven't seen more of Chaplin's full-length movies. Feel free to recommend City Lights if you think it's better.

9. Hoop Dreams - All I know is that it's a documentary about basketball? I know nothing about basketball.

10. A Streetcar Named Desire - I started watching this once, but halfway through I managed to slice my palm open with a fruit knife and had to leave to get stitches. Now I just associate it with bad memories.

It took me a long time to get into A Woman is a Woman. The sound editing was rigid and jarring with the way the score would stop and start. I'd even say the first half is only half-decent as it's more shrill than anything. There are a couple cutesy things (the instant wardrobe) but it feels far too smug, like Godard is daring the audience to keep watching, daring us to dislike it. The second half is fantastic though and maybe it's just that I caught the rhythm but I think it has a lot to do with Belmondo's supporting role, which is more ample in the last 45 minutes. He and Karina have great chemistry. It's an amusing movie with some great scenes but it didn't hit me as well as Godard's other movies.

1) The Last Detail - Swearing sailors sounds superb.

2) The Last Picture Show - Going to keep watching the America Lost and Found Box Set.

3)Life of Brian - I have no idea why I haven't seen this.

4) Bronson - Just saw Drive, loved it, must see more by Refn.

5) Black Moon - Drawn in by various cover art for years. No idea what it's about.

6)Precious – Most recent BP nominee I haven’t seen.

7)Life is Beautiful – Highest in IMDB top 250 I haven’t seen

8)The Rules of the Game - It's so high regarded and yet I know nothing about it.

9)The Company of Wolves - Friend of mine lent me this some time ago, he tells me it's really good.

10)Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance - Love Oldboy and have never gotten around to seeing the rest of the Vengeance trilogy.

TenSpades, I'll hook you up with Aparajito.

Even though I've only seen two Melvilles--Le Cercle Rouge and now Le Samourai--it seems that watching them, I can virtually taste it influencing popular cinema for decades to come. First things first: the film is good. It manages to be thrilling, tense, and engaging despite about half of it being sans dialogue and with only a scene or two of any sort of "action". The film relies mostly on Alain Delon's fantastic performance as the quiet loner.

It's a performance (and a film) that has very directly influenced popular film in the decades since it's release, and it's palpable. The issue with many later films that borrowed from Le Samourai, as it often is, is that they are informed by style rather than substance. Le Samourai is a mostly cold and minimalist film but it's certainly stylish. It seems that some later films took notes from Delon on how to be cool; his quirks--his fedora and bird--match those of similar characters from recent independent cinema, say Drive's driver's scorpion jacket and toothpicks (granted, Drive is a much better film than those I'm trying to reference here, but it no doubt borrows liberally from Le Samourai). Regardless, it's a truly great film that has left it's mark, and I can be glad to have finally seen it.

List:

1. La Notte - Love L'avventura, would like to get through the trilogy

2. Andrei Rublev - The last of the TSPDT Top 50, Tarkovsky's rough

3. Stranger Than Paradise - Haven't seen a Jarmusch

4. The Blue Angel - Haven't seen a von Sternberg

5. The Conformist - I know very little about this

6. Sweet Smell of Success - I've overlooked it, sounds great though

7. Ninotchka - Need more Lubitsch

8. Greed - Gotta work through the silents

9. Top Hat - Swing Time was enjoyable, but it's the only classic musical I've seen

It's a crazy ride.

Gosford Park is one of those films that I can see why people like, and why it's a great piece, but I was very bored with it. The actors all do their job very well, there's some nice social commentary, it was well made and the mystery is actually okay, but every character is so uninteresting and I end up not really caring for anybody. Altman makes everybody dark past and or intentions so subtle you almost miss the majority of them.

Then again, it might just be me. Maybe I just don't care for these type of film, about class warfare with rich snobs and servants. The Rules of the Game, Downtown Abbey and Upstairs/Downstairs never did anything for. So maybe there's that.

That's funny when I saw "Midnight Cowboys" on your list I thought it was some other film I hadn't seen. I couldn't decide between Se7en and Midnight Cowboy so I flipped a coin and got Se7en.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance - Stewart and Wayne make an interesting dichotomy. The one thing I could never figure out was whether or not Liberty Valance recognized Ransom Stoddard from their earlier encounter.

I saw a few parallels with this and High Noon but I liked this a little more. Lee Van Cleef was in this as well. He always seems underused in these films.

I could've done with a lot less "PILGRIM." I don't think I've heard a nickname used that much in any film. Beyond that I didn't get into the statehood story too much. It all seemed secondary and strangely tacked on at the end.

also watched:

The Bourne Ultimatum - I really didn't like the way this started off. We must've visted 10 locations in the first fifteen minutes and it was beginning to feel like a spy parody.

It got a little better as time went on and soon it was round 3 of Bourne vs. CIA dirtbags et al. I guess my one problem was Nicky Parsons switching sides midway through the film.

IMDb list:

#235 Rope - I haven't checked but Hitchcock may have the most directorial appearances on the IMDb 250. 9/28/11

new #238 Sleuth (1972) - Don't know anything about it. 10/12/11

new #239 Shutter Island - Looked like a run-of-the-mill mystery. 10/12/11

Zogo, enjoy Roman Holiday

Took some time away from the thread, but came blazing back with High and Low, my first non-samurai Kurosawa. I loved how the first half was a study of class and morals and then it switched gears into a full blown police procedural about halfway through. I love these types of movies and I think it's my second favorite Kurosawa now, behind the Seven Samurai.

1) Carrie- still working through the horror list
2) The Asphalt Jungle- love those heist films

Go watch Carrie, Mistletoe Donkey, it's a classic.

Predator was one of the most hilariously over-the-top macho movies I've ever seen. Like every time you see a well-known movie for the first time, I suddenly understood tons of jokes and references to it made in other media. Well worth seeing just for that. The suspense was decent I think, but so much of the action was "fire 10000 bullets into this enemy camp/predator/tree while poo poo explodes in the background". It felt sort of stupid.

On the other hand, I now know 100% more huge pussy joked than I did before :haw:

Need to see:
1. Trafic - I've seen Mr Hulot's Holiday and Playtime, but never this. My grandma's a big fan of Tati, so I really should.

Chaplin's best.

Finally watched Scenes from a Marriage.

My Criticker review:

I was sadly not as impressed by this as I should have been. It was obviously incredibly well-written and acted, and Bergman perfectly achieves what he intended to do, but I just didn't really give much of a poo poo about the characters (particularly Johan). Basically, a brilliantly made film that does very little for me personally. 80/100

My list:

Ulysses' Gaze - I've heard Angelopoulos is great.

Day of Wrath - I loved The Passion of Joan of Arc but couldn't get into Ordet, so I've kinda given up on Dreyer.

Fires on the Plain - Didn't care for The Burmese Harp. Figure I should eventually see this one though.

The Son - I feel like I should give the Dardenne's a chance, but I find their style so boring.

Ashes and Diamonds - Kanal was great. Should enjoy this.

Lola Montes - Another Criterion sale blind buy. Sounds pretty awesome.

Silent Light - Sounds really interesting and the style seems right up my alley.

Fallen Angels - Not a huge Kar Wai Wong fan, but I feel like I should see more of his work.

The Letter Never Sent - Been on my wishlist for a long time, and it just showed up on Hulu Plus in HD. I figure it's time.

Steamboat Bill, Jr. - More Buster Keaton is always good by me.

The Last Picture Show is pretty terrific. It's two hours long but feels more like four, and not in a bad way if that makes sense. Bogdanovich made a movie with a slew of characters that felt fully developed, each with their own specific ark. Nothing is wasted. The isolation, claustrophobia and the feeling of being trapped in a small town is shown so well here. Great use of facial expressions in closeups, specifically when Sonny watches as Jacy drives off. He realizes what the audience already knew, that she was a thrillseeker who never had any feelings for him. She just wanted to escape her own boring life; wanted things she couldn't have. As soon as she got them...they meant nothing. I really loved this.

I also watched Life of Brian at the behest of a classmate. Good God was it funny. Michael Palin was an all-star (as were the rest). His Pilate, as he got more and more ridiculous, kept getting funnier. It's probably my favourite Python movie.

LIST O' SHAME:

1) The Last Detail - Swearing sailors sounds superb.

2) Five Easy Pieces - Going to keep watching the America Lost and Found Box Set.

3)Young Frankenstein - I have seen Mel Brooks' Silent Movie but not this...

Ta gueule, laisse-moi finir.
I had to look up what The Company of Wolves was about, but it looks pretty good. Also, adapted from a story by Angela Carter, so you know it's going to be weird.

I watched Modern Times, and it was magical. :allears: One of the funniest, sweetest movies I've ever seen, and I'm glad that this thread made me watch it. It's insane how this doesn't feel outdated at all.

Need to see:
1. Trafic - I've seen Mr Hulot's Holiday and Playtime, but never this. My grandma's a big fan of Tati, so I really should.

6. The Draughtman's Contract - Enjoyed both The Cook, the Thief etc. and Drowning by Numbers, so this is the next Greenaway I need to see.

7. Punch Drunk Love - This and Hard Eight are the only P T Anderson movies I haven't seen.

8. The Apartment - Hardly know anything about it, just had it recommended everywhere.

9. Hoop Dreams - All I know is that it's a documentary about basketball?

10. A Streetcar Named Desire - I started watching this once, but halfway through I managed to slice my palm open with a fruit knife and had to leave to get stitches. Now I just associate it with bad memories.

Have seen: Chinatown, North By Northwest, McCabe & Mrs. Miller, Persona, Easy Rider, Casablanca, City of God, Predator, Modern Times

It's one of those that don't feel very long despite it's runtime. Highly watchable.

Man Seven was such a fun film. Very upbeat and all around nice. Hopefully Mr. Fincher will someday get back into making happy films. But now really that was quite a depressing voyage. Great film, and from the four David Fincher films I seen so far, probably my favourite, but can't say I'm in a hurry to pop it back again in the dvd tray.

The Shame List:

The Adventures of Baron Munchausen Looks insane.

Midnight Cowboy Cowboys eh?

Carlos the Jackal It's quite long. 505 minutes long.

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me She's dead, wrapped in plastic.

Hard Boiled Only watched some of the American Woo movies.

The Magnificent Ambersons The masterpiece that was not to be.

Dracula The Francis Ford Coppola one.

Mystic River Got no idea what this one is about.

Mesrine: Killer Instinct/Public Enemy No.1

A Serious Man Very serious.

Have watched so far 12 movies: Barton Fink, Sweet Smell of Success, The 400 Blows, Rocky, Videodrome, Charade, The Double Life of Veronique, Ace in the Hole, Easy Rider, Dark City, Gosford Park, Seven.

Electronico6, you get Hard Boiled.

Fitzcarraldo was pretty terrific. I enjoyed it quite a bit more than Aguirre and, despite it being an hour longer, this felt exactly as long as Aguirre did (a good thing). It's a pretty brooding film with the combination of Klaus Kinski and the massive jungle, and overall it has the truly epic feel that I think Aguirre was going for but came slightly short of. Good work.

List:

10. The King of Comedy - Got some Scorsese holes

Films I've Watched: Dawn of the Dead - 3.5/5; Adaptation - 4.5/5; Sullivan's Travels - 3.5/5; Touch of Evil - 4/5; Once Upon a Time in the West - 4/5; Boogie Nights - 3.5/5; Almost Famous - 4.5/5; Hiroshima Mon Amour - 4/5; City of God - 4/5; The Treasure of the Sierra Madre - 3.5/5; Brazil - 5/5; Sunset Boulevard - 3.5/5; The Conversation - 3/5; Trainspotting - 3/5; L.A. I am the math man.

PDMChubby, good options there, but I'm going with Greed.

The Unbearable Lightness of Being gets slightly better past the part where I quit last time, but it's still mostly unbearable and way too long. I just plain don't care about these characters, and the occasional bits of interesting philosophical musings are not worth the tedious romance and sex that underpins the film. Some of the political stuff is also interesting, but again it only appears in spurts and is rather underdeveloped. It's not a bad film, the performances are strong and the cinematography is terrific, but its priorities just don't match mine.

The Godfather III Seen the first two, they're great movies, but never though it was worth watching this.

Peaceful Anarchy, Twelve O'Clock High for you

I watched Carrie knowing what was coming which hung like a cloud over the movie. You just kind of hope things get better to avoid the inevitable, but it never does. I liked it, but I'm not a big horror guy so I couldn't really get into it. It's still easy to see why it was a classic.

1) M- I've had this sitting around for a few months now nut haven't gotten around to it
2) The Asphalt Jungle- love those heist films
3) The Iron Giant- I need to watch more animation and I hear this is heart wrenching
4) Battleship Potemkin- I've only seen silent comedies and it's time to expand my horizons. This seems like essential viewing
5) Rififi- I've put this off long enough
6) Love and Death- I'm trying to fill in my Woody Allen holes
7) Captain Blood- let's have some fun
8) Pale Flower- this looks interesting
9) Modern Times- the last of the "big" Chaplin films I need to see
10) Winchester '73- let's watch some more Anthony Mann

I remember liking this one when it came out.

Well Hard Boiled throws every rule out of the window when it comes to it's gunfights, but it's just a lot of fun to watch. It clearly goes for style over substance and it's better for it. Can't stop laughing at the notion that by the end of the film hundreds of innocent people were killed, the destruction of government property counts up to millions of dollars and it all feels just like a normal day in Hong Kong. It's a very good thrill ride and people shooting at other people never gets old, provided you suspend all notions of realism.

I can't imagine anyone else is going to recommend this so I will. This is my second favorite Eastwood directed film next to Unforgiven. Hope you enjoy it.

I'm going to jump in on this.

My current shame list:

Chinatown - A young Jack Nicholson in a crime drama sounds appealing.

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb - I love comedies and have watched more than I can count. I feel like this should be step one but I have yet to watch it.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind - I'm not big on sci-fi films but I do love Spielberg.

Sunset Blvd. - Saw this on IMDB's top 250 and I enjoy film noir.

Schindler's List - Again Spielberg. I avoided this because it is so long.

Trainspotting - Danny Boyle. I liked 127 Hours, Slumdog Millionaire, and 28 Days Later well enough.

Grave of Fireflies - I liked Spirited Away. Hopefully I like this too.

The Prestige - Nolan connection.

Magnolia - This always seemed like art house to me so I avoided it. Plus it's very long.

Badlands - Malick and Martin Sheen. Plus this seems like it would be entertaining.

mid, you've got my two top movies in there. I'll go with Dr. Strangelove cause you seem more interested in it than Magnolia.

Not a whole lot to say about Twelve O'Clock High, it's a solid movie about the stress of war, focusing on some fighter pilots and their general played by Peck. Good performances and well done overall, but didn't feel all that special. I think Dawn Patrol does the same general thing much better.

I think Dawn Patrol does the same general thing much better.

Throw me a rating for this one. I've had a vague interest in it for a long time now.

9/10, most of my issues were really the general production value issues of a 1930 film.

Criticker review: Starts off as a generic war movie with bad sound, but as things progress the weight of the content slowly sinks in. It's a different view of war, without the action or intensity, but the somber and grim reality still seeps in as we see the psychological scars forming in the characters. The cyclic nature of events that runs through the film is very appropriate.
