This is inaccurate, there were plenty of people that would have picked it up. Instead he got on his soap box and made a highly inaccurate speech about the movie industry (despite the fact that it was this industry that gave him a career in the first place) and wasted everybody's time and hurt the chances of some other independent filmmakers getting picked up. And Red State is a piece of poo poo, just like every other Kevin Smith movie.

The newest "How Did This Get Made?" is by far the best one yet. Not only is Patton Oswalt in the house, but they have the director of Punisher: War Zone there to talk about it. Completely different from the typical "That literally made NO SENSE!" type episodes.

I'm listening to How Did This Get Made for the first time because the prospect of a long, step by step discussion with a film director is always going to be interesting, and like 3 minutes in, Patton Oswalt (I think) said this: "Garth Ennis is a, I believe he's a British writer, he might be Scottish". Come on, it's not that hard.

He's caught up in this idea of real comedy requiring the comedian to expose his inner fears and hang-ups when, at least in my opinion, it's about making people laugh, something Maron never did very well. All that considered, I think it's kind of odd that he's able to get such great guests. He's become like the Johnny Carson of comedy interview podcasts. And though I don't particular like him as a person, I'm going to keep listening as long as he keeps getting the guests.

It's funny, back in the early 2000's, when I was a talk radio junkie, I was constantly worried about my favorite shows being canned because I'd never laugh so hard again, poo poo like Opie & Anthony getting fired and relegated to satellite and threatened with firing and blah blah blah, and restructuring and whatever, and now, it's like, gently caress radio. All of my favorite people are doing podcasts for free, (mostly) commercial free, uncensored and totally cutting loose. Hooray technology.

Just bought my ticket to see Greg Proops record The Smartest Man in the World in Cleveland on Thursday  Really looking forward to it, it's one of my favorite podcasts, and I was hoping he would record one while he was in town this weekend.As far as Marc Maron is concerned, his latest material is worth checking out. I saw him live about a month ago, and he put on a really good show. It helped that he opened with the story of his flight on the way here.

We get the occasional big name at the Orpheum (like when I saw Eddie Izzard), and you'll get Bill Cosby or the like at one of the casinos in nearby Tunica, MS, but I've noticed the various standup comedy podcasters saying that they love Nashville but never go to Memphis. I'd try to bring Paul F. Tompkins here but I fear it would just be a sad disappointment.

Maron is a great interviewer when he gets serious and takes his guests to task (Dane Cook, Carlos Mencia, Gallagher) but he has been horribly inconsistent lately. The hatchet job on Joe Rogan for doing Fear Factor and being such a dick to Demetri Martin while giving Andrew Dice Clay and Lisa Lampanelli free passes come to mind. He also subscribes to the theory that all comedians are horribly hosed up and boy oh boy does he ever love to project Actually, come to think of it, Maron posted this today. That episode was fantastic, and actually delved into the how the movie got made (like, you know, the title of the podcast.) This is good. Do more of this. Less lame viewer mail. More people who worked on the movie on as guests. It benefited immensely from the lack of Jason Mantzoukas, where most of the annoying "literally"s and "it MAKES NO SENSE"s spout from.

I think Maron is probably the best interviewer for the type of interview he's doing. If you contrast with Kevin Pollak, who has the same caliber of guests and twice the running time, Maron's shows are consistently more interesting and contain 100% less brown-nosing bullshit. There's some episodes where he clearly alpha-maled out by the guests (especially when dealing with the dudes from his 80s days - the Kinison entourage, Dice Clay, etc.) that are definitely less interesting but I find him to be surprisingly consistent for someone who just kinda started doing this out of the blue. Oh, yeah, and I saw one of his Comedy Central specials and I agree that, were it not for WTF, I probably wouldn't have kept watching if I'd been flipping channels. I honestly think that a format like what Henry Rollins does (spoken word / ranting) would probably serve him better.
