Travakian posted:Yes, it's a Rebel, and yes it shoots HD. Think of it as a 'higher-end' Rebel (compared to the idea of the Rebel series being consumer/home-use devices)... but if you're looking into investing in a DSLR for video use, consider at the Canon T3i (also called 600D); it's got a few features that beat out the t2i as far as video-capturing goes. Alright. I was thinking of eventually getting a Canon Rebel DSLR camera anyways. I'd ideally want to keep picture and HD video capture to one camera to simplify things and to reduce the amount I would need to pack in going to another country (i.e. Taiwan) as well as for travel. Also, would you recommend Premiere Pro over Sony Vegas Pro 10? What are the major differences between Vegas Pro and Movie Studio HD Platinum besides price? Should I also look at getting Photoshop CS 5 for image editing or just use freeware like GIMP and Irfanview?

Right, I'm wording this very carefully, but it's something I've always been curious about, and given recent events, my curiosity has peaked again. As you know, Reddit has a sub Reddit for posting legal, but disturbing given the context, pictures of minors in sexual situations. Now, using legal pictures of minors on public forums must make you a pretty piss poor paedophile. My question is, how do paedophiles go about getting their truly terrible material? Obviously they can't just type child porn into Google. My hunch is that the proper child porn no doubt exists on the dark web, sites hidden from Google without domain names, but barring knowing the address, how would a paedophile get it? What I've always suspected is that clandestine communities exist in the public web that require a lot of work to find, then access where people can get information about finding the relevant sites, but I could be wrong. Could someone more knowledgeable than I tell me if I'm right on this? For obvious reasons, I don't want too much detail on this, I'm just genuinely curious about the whole concept of a second tier internet which 99% of people aren't aware of/able to access.

Not being someone who jerks off to children I can't speak with certainty, but I'd imagine a goodly amount of that poo poo is handed around Usenet, IRC channels, and P2P programs like Kazaa or whatever the kid(dy fiddler)s are using these days.

You probably can, although I admit I'm not super-inclined to try. First, note that the laws vary by country. Some have no laws against possession, some none against distribution, others not even laws against production, and I'm sure some just say you can be a porn star at 16 but not 15. So there probably are sites that are called "Bob's Child Pornium" that are just that and are hosted in countries where the authorities don't give a gently caress or legally can't. There also definitely sites that are off the web. An example would be The Onion Router, usually just called TOR. The TOR network has sites on it that can only be accessed if you go through the TOR anonymizing network which you can access either by downloading a pre-configured webbrowser or an addon to firefox. You can generally only find a TOR site if someone tells you about the url, ie you get referred from someone who already knows it and trusts you. Freenet is another example of the same idea. The NYT recent published an article about a child porn board being busted with some brief details about how it operated.

Elementary, sure. What about a girl who's 17 years and 6 months old? Is that disturbing? What about when she's 17 and 11 months old? 18? It really doesn't have anything to do with age since most people can't tell after a certain point of physical maturity. Just a pet peeve. Experto Crede posted:My question is, how do paedophiles go about getting their truly terrible material? Obviously they can't just type child porn into Google. Probably usenet, IRC, TOR, filesharing services. I know that in Japan, for example, a lot of the pedo paraphernalia is distributed either through the Perfect Dark P2P network or clandestine websites that will mail you DVDs. Yeah. DVDs.

There are extremely attractive 17 year olds but I wouldn't hook up with them because they're 17 and that's creepy. So that's my take on it.

You think it's fine, you masturbate to it, whatever -- she's hot. One day you find out that she's simply an over-developed 16-year-old high school kid. I'd still think the girl was hot when I heard she was 16 but it would be weird and creepy if I actually met her and tried to hook up with her. I wouldn't even date/try to hook up with an 18 year old in highschool now. I'm 23 and graduated and all that; it's just weird for people in completely different life phases to be messing around like that. edit: And the weird thing isn't guys that find one 16 year old attractive because I'll guarantee everyone has done a double take when they see a girl jogging or working at a restaurant or something, the weird thing is guys that seek that out specifically, because they're obviously just going after the most easily manipulated person they can with no regard for what they're doing to that person. I usually ignore these arguments, but that's a pretty clear idea of why someone that's mostly adjusted to normal society would see all of these things as wrong. "Phases of life" is much more effective than arguing about specific ages and laws and history than anything like that. The vulnerability of a young person is intangible and defies precise math-based discussions on age and all that. Reddit's blowing up right now about the male's natural state of being able to "sense fertility" and other bullshit, but the fact that people who are at an age where the inherent wrong of overlapping such a personal issue with an emotionally immature person (relative to the creepers age) is lost is so loving weird and I don't know why it offends some people so much to say that it's hosed up to have pics of teenagers to jerk off to.

And what is child porn anyway? Sometimes a guy just likes to invite kids into his van and pay them to try on clothes while he videotapes them. For art. Is that child porn or just plain capitalism? Who's with me here?

I'd ideally want to keep picture and HD video capture to one camera to simplify things and to reduce the amount I would need to pack in going to another country (i.e. Taiwan) as well as for travel. Well that's definitely the camera for you then. As far as lenses go, that's a whole massive other discussion, but I am of the school that the lens makes the camera. The better glass, the better image. There's a reason great lenses are so expensive. That said, the stock lens you can get with the t2i (or t3i, which is a better camera if you can afford it) would probably be just fine for what you're doing. The difference between editing software is really the same as the difference between operating systems. They generally do the same thing, it's just a matter of what interface you feel more comfortable with. For example, with the t2i, it shoots files, obviously, and they're .mov files. They're encoded in a codec called H264. Some editing software can work with these files natively, and some editing software requires you to convert them to a more useable format (the aforementioned Final Cut Pro 7, for example, requires you to convert them if you don't want to have to render every time you change the edit, while Final Cut Pro X does not require this. Those of us that do this professionally still prefer 7 for many other reasons that I can't go into detail on, despite this fact though.) I would say download a few trials, see what you like, and stick with it. All editing software is not the same, but it generally all does the same stuff, and more than likely it's all capable of doing what you're planning on doing with it, so it really comes down to a personal preference/cost thing. If you ever have to start creating EDLs for online sessions, or exporting OMFs for sound mixes, or taking XMLs from timelines to reconform R3D files, them you can start worrying about the intricacies of what editing system is best for your workflow. Until then, it's more of a comfort/convenience thing. In the same vein, GIMP is probably fine for what still image work you want to do, but if you ever get into serious photo editing, Adobe Lightroom is a pretty awesome program for editing images, and the way it works with the RAW files your DSLR can shoot is pretty enlightening. Anyway, this is definitely not a small question anymore, so I'll leave it at that.

I wasn't sure if I should put this here or in the Ask us about the forums thread but here goes: A friend of a friend purchased a Something Awful account Thursday night September 29th 2011 and still hasn't received it. He was definitely charged on his credit card for it and received an order number, yet never received an e-mail containing the account information. He has tried e-mailing support@somethingawful.com three times, and Lowtax once. No responses. I am merely acting as a messenger for my friend's friend because he doesn't know how else to receive the account he paid for. What should he do/who should I contact in order to get him his account??

If you think that they're going to make a big deal out of it, claiming that you didn't give proper notice, your best method is registered mail - then you have proof that they received it, and when they received it. If you don't anticipate any real issues, in person or by email is fine.

Not sure where to ask this... I went to see Skrillex live last night (he's a DJ). He had this technology where it basically mapped a live avatar of him behind him on a video screen. It would follow any of his movements to the letter like motion capture technology. It could be whatever he wanted, like a weird tron character, or a robot, or a zombie. It was insanely cool. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVNWUAaWJmc So what exactly was it?
