To run Quake mods, create a shortcut to the source port .exe and add -game quakemod in the target line after the quotations wherein "quakemod" is the name of the folder containing the mod, which you should have extracted to your quake directory. Run mod with shortcut. Also worth noting that Darkplaces can be a huge pain in the rear end with broken functions and features, bugs and crashes. The only benefit to using it is the extra eyecandy. Otherwise, nquake is the better port in every way. treat fucked around with this message at 02:54 on Oct 4, 2011 |

Easy to set up and not too many bells and whistles which is what I prefer. Seems asinine having 3 different source ports of every classic game for different purposes, but I spend more time organizing my Steam games than I spend playing them anyway.

What's a good sourceport for mods then? Also, how do I make it so Quake on Steam isn't a horrible pixelated mess when I scale it up past 640x480?

So I created a batch file to auto load Epic 2 and the Nazi pk3, like the ones in the video, when all the files were in one folder and everything worked great. Now that I made another batch file so that I can keep all my files organized it fails to load properly. Any clue what I'm dong wrong? Finally decided to five the Marathon trilogy another shot and... It's actually pretty fun! Only problem is that it took about 2 hours to get the whole thing working properly - god knows why the Aleph One developers didn't just put a drat fov slider in the options or something. Anyway, now I've got the trilogy installed and compressed into a single zip file (including all the HD texture packs etc.) I was thinking of uploading it for the benefit of people without hours to spare fiddling with settings. Does anyone know whether the GPL license permits distribution in this way? I did try having a look but unfortunately I don't speak lawyer

^^ The GPL basically just says "if you release a modified version of this software, you also need to release the modified source code so that other people can learn from your modifications and modify it in turn". If you're just using an off-the-shelf AlephOne.exe, simply linking to the A1 site should be sufficient. And yeah, A1 as a project is really unpolished and feature-light. The install process is kind of messy, there's no 3d renderer still, you have to exit the game to adjust the options...I love A1 for letting me actually play Marathon, but when you compare it to something like gzDoom or Darkplaces, it's just sad.

I played Quake 1 DM yesterday after years of not playing it, and man, I totally forgot how much it revolves around the Rocket Launcher. I can't imagine anyone playing it without the setting that makes weapons stay if someone picks them up, because otherwise it becomes a handful of people dominating the entire game with the RL while everyone else plinks each other to death with the Shotgun. Still fun as hell, though.

I never knew cameras could be vivisected by Fiends.

The funny/sad thing about the Doom/Wolfenstein rooms in Rage is that they're vastly more colourful than the environments they're hidden in, and the player gun model remains looking bleached and washed-out even when you're in them. Also, for those having trouble running multiple Doom mods simultaneously, get Quickly Launchering GZDoom from the OP. It's super handy.

I'd love to see a "Build Engine All-Stars" game where you can play as Duke Nukem, Lo Wang, Caleb, or Leonard, playing through all the levels, with all of the weapons, enemies, power-ups, and features. Multi-player would be a blast. Sort of like a Build-only AEons of Death.

Before I make an event posting for Half-Life mods, I'd like to throw out a list of mods I have game servers for, and the ones I don't. You guys help me decide what mods you want to play. I plan on playing for 2-3 hours, so we could have anywhere from 1-3 mods played depending on ones chosen. I have found game servers for: Sven-Coop The Specialists Wizard Wars Natural Selection Day of Defeat Action Half-Life Don't have game servers for, and we'd need hosting: Vampire Slayer Jailbreak Frontline Force Firearms Science and Industry Pirates, Vikings and Knights The Opera RocketCrowbar Scientist Hunt Am I missing anything? Pick two or three of these, goons! I will make an event posting as soon as we come to a decision.

Wizard Wars download: http://www.moddb.com/mods/wizard-wars/downloads/wizard-wars-127-full-install There is also a newer version 1.3 done by another team, which adds some minor stuff, but I can't find any servers for that. If anyone is unfamiliar Wizard Wars is basically Team Fortress... with wizards. I will probably play this after we are done with the other mods, just for shits. So it's quite obvious that Sven-Coop is on our list. Second is either TS or A-HL. We could even invade a TS-RP server, but we could also blow our brains out. Natural Selection or S&I would be great, just with a harder learning curve. Anyways, starting off co-op, then completely slaughtering each other, we need something less intense to wind down with... e: http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197961412493 - if anyone needs to add me. Thought that was really cool - the original discs for Dungeon Keeper (another great game I still play now and then) and the expansion pack did the same thing as well. Both Quake and Dungeon Keeper have excellent ambient-style soundtracks that really go well with their respective games so I enjoy listening to them from time to time.

Yeah any game that came on CD and used Redbook audio allowed you to do that. Tons of great PS1 games had that feature, notably the excellent music from the Twisted Metal, Jet Moto, and Warhawk games. Man I loved SingleTrak.
