Read this very interesting article on what it's like to compete at ADCC if you're not an A-lister. Considering the article is named "The disaster tournament", I'm sure you can imagine the contents. It's fascinating reading. http://zinganobjj.com/adcc-the-disaster-tournament/

So wait, he went all that way, she made weight, went through all the hoops, and then he pulled her form the tournament? What a loving idiot. It sounds like on at least 3 occasions he took his ball and went home after making long trips. I've got no doubt that some of what he was saying was true but I'm sure much of it is exaggeration as well.

I already posted about how crappy the mat setup was and how inconsistent they were when competitors went out of bounds. The whole thing is just amateur.

I don't doubt that ADCC has a lot of unprofessional bullshit involved in the organizing, but I'm taking everything this dude says with a huge grain of salt because of this - quote:Well, not so fast. About 5 to 7 days prior to the tournament they The new weigh-in rules were up on the adcc site months ahead of time, we were discussing them in this thread as early as May. He's either completely full of poo poo or he's so stupid he didn't even bother to check the main adcc site or literally any grappling news site until a week ahead of time.

Martial arts people aren't known to be too smart or too computer savvy, so it could be either or a combination of the two. Regardless, the housing thing is hilariously bad, and the general favoritism of a-lister competitors is definitely not doing anyone any favours. I mean, allowing one competitor to be a kilo overweight while choosing to hound another (who makes weight) throughout the entire day is just ridiculously unfair.

And after the break here on MMA Live, we'll talk with renowned scholar Forrest Griffin about the President's new economic plan. And later, Professor Kimbo Slice will be in studio to discuss some of the newest developments from the Large Hadron Collider.

fawker posted:man, that floor REALLY did look slippery My coach competed in ADCC 2007. He mentioned to me that he had no idea how slippery the mats were going to be. His theory is that they do it on purpose to keep the game more skewed towards bjj rather than wrestling (which I would buy). Said making any sort of good penetrating takedowns was hard as gently caress, and that if he ever competes in adcc again he is going to wear wrestling shoes.

I cannot imagine how awful it would be to wear wrestling shoes if you were in the same division as Palhares.

Yes, the tournament that gives you penalties for pulling guard is definitely trying to make the game more skewed towards bjj and away from wrestling.

Also, the man who was complaining the most about the slippery mat was the notorious wrestler Renzo Gracie.

Not sure if they will be releasing anything longer and official but I really like the HD clips from some of the matches at this year's ADCC that are turning up in the interviews Gunnar Nelson http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKGLrPHVkpw&feature=related Ryan Hall http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6eskluB5Yxo&feature=related Jeff Glover http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQ-GATUqxLA&feature=related

drat its like a slip-n-slide Did they hose down the entire floor before the tournament?

Apparently the arena they used is a hockey arena and they put the flooring and mats on top of the ice.

The floor is actually wood, not concrete, it's just painted metal grey. Still the red area was way too small, there were at least a dozen matches that ended up on the floor at some point.

I made weight for Grapplers Quest tonight at the UFC Fan Expo in Houston. I'm pumped. I'll be doing nogi intermediate tomorrow and gi blue belt Saturday, my weight class only. I think they may have broken a record for the number of participants, or the number of pre-registration. I'll try to keep a report.

Also he had enough sense to go around molesting corner men, but only handshaking the judges. What was the deal with Monson greasing? He's always been one of my favorite fighters (I know that's totally inexplicable), and it's depressing to think he'd resort to that to compete. Has he or any of the officials made a statement yet?

Has he or any of the officials made a statement yet? The story from him is that he'd put ointment on his injured elbow, then put a brace over the elbow, and when he started to sweat the ointment ran down his arm. Since his arm was (I believe) injured from his match with Davi Ramos at Grappler's Quest, that means Davi managed to beat Monson at ADCC despite not even being in the tournament.

Ok, so I ended up arriving at the Expo yesterday close to 12:30, since my division wasn't set to start until 1:30, and turns out, my division was already ending. They apparently started super early and were moving super fast (who knew), so I got DQ'd. Luckily, they were able to put me in the absolute division, where I won my first match by RNC, second by kimura, and then I lost the third round by points, like 20-0. Today is gi and I plan on getting there super early so I don't miss out on my weight class again.

Part 2 to my story. So I ended up getting 3rd in gi, and got my first submission victory in the gi as a blue belt, a bow and arrow choke. Upset at myself because I lost my semi final by one point, and I was up in the final minute. That's the second time that has happened to me. Can't dwell on the negative though, I had an awesome time at the fan expo and UFC event itself.
