Gmail only pushes throgh Exchange. I've not had any issues with notifications on Facebook or anything else really.

I did have an issue today where a couple of apps I updated over the air would instantly crash when opening them. Had to wait till I got back to my PC to tether-boot for it to be fixed.

What are your experiences with push notifications in iOS 5? I have a feeling the edge cases are going to be a pain for Apple support once it goes live:

* Facebook notifications do not work for me. There are a few other reported cases, and nobody knows what causes it or how to fix it. Restoring the phone doesn't help.

* Foursquare notifies me whenever one of my friends checks in somewhere, even though the option is turned off.

* GMail won't push notifications to me unless it's set up as an Exchange account. This was true for 4.x as well, but I assumed that upgrading and restoring would fix it. Now I'm wondering: were GMail accounts ever able to push? Or is it just me?

1. Facebook notifications rarely work for anyone. It's a huge piece of poo poo.
2. Same thing happened to me, I just turned off Foursquare notifications in Settings.
3. Gmail never supported push in IMAP. Only way you get push Gmail is through Exchange.

In other news, PreferenceLoader has been updated for iOS 5 :toot: No more editing plist files to get jailbroken apps in Settings!

Wow I didn't expect one person to be able to satisfactorily answer all three of those :D Thanks, I feel better now. (Still, some people say Fb notifications work just fine for them on iOS 5. I'll just pretend they are lying for now.)

Have we heard anything about "NoAccessorySplash" being updated for iOS 5.0?

I just bought a car with USB in and I really don't like using the car's dash unit to navigate through all my music. I'd much rather use my iPhone's music player to pick music.

I can actually confirm that it doesn't work with 5.0 at this point. I just spent the last hour or so downloading beta software, tether jail breaking my iPhone 4, testing to see if the Accessory Splash wouldn't come up when plugged into my car, and restoring from an iCloud backup.

Hopefully someone updates it. I really wish Apple would just include a toggle so people don't have to deal with terrible head unit UIs.

Feel free to update the doc if you like. As for finding out if/when it will be updated, I'd suggest emailing the developer.

Well this is annoying. The Netflix app had stopped working for me, it just returns to the main menu instantly after launch. The only thing I can think of that I've changed since the last time I used it was installing SBSettings, is that a known incompatibility? Because that would be a really big pain in the rear end. Using a tethered jailbreak on 4.3.5.

So I'm curious, if I follow this (found on the JailbreakMe site), it will wipe all the jailbreak stuff off my phone and it will be back to normal?

quote:

If you ever decide that you want to undo your jailbreak, connect your device to your computer, sync to make a full backup, press Restore in iTunes to wipe the device, and load your backup when prompted. All your App Store apps and the information in them will be preserved as usual.

Since I'm syncing and then restoring a backup, I'm not sure how all the jailbreak stuff isn't backed up in that sync.

Jailbreak apps aren't backed up in a sync. If you poke around the file system you'll see why but the short of it is that they're stored ENTIRELY different from real apps. Some apps store pieces of information in the same place, but 99% of jailbreak data isn't stored in a place where iTunes looks to backup/restore.

However, jailbreak app settings are backed up so you can upgrade, restore to a backup, trail break and install whatever app and it'll be setup exactly as it was.

I've got a new model iPhone 3GS on 4.2.1 using a tethered jailbreak with redsn0w0.9.6b4.

I haven't had any problems in the past 9 months, but this morning I opened up the iPod app, the phone hung, and I haven't been able to fix it. I've tried rebooting tethered through redsn0w and all that happens is it hangs at the pineapple logo for a while, and then changes to the Apple logo after a while (although the second time I did it it showed the USB -> iTunes cord screen).

Do I need to restore using iTunes and rejailbreak or what? I still have the 4.2.1 restore ipsw and my SHSH blobs in TinyUmbrella if that helps.

e: Just used TinyUmbrella to restore back to 4.2.1 and used greenpois0n to jailbreak again with the added benefit of being untethered. My last sync was only a week or so ago so I didn't lose anything really, but resyncing 1000 some odd songs :argh:.

To answer my question from earlier in case someone else has the same issue: Find another version of Pwnagetool if you want to jailbreak a 3G.

Unfortunately I was able to jailbreak without much problem , but for whatever reason my phone won't connect to my cellular network while jailbroken, which seems kind of strange.

Any ideas on which app is used for iCloud backups, with respect to 3G Unrestrictor? I'm not too keen on it blasting 4GB of pictures/videos over 3G and would rather it wait til I'm actually on wifi.

My guess is Settings app?

iCloud backups happen when the phone is on Wifi, locked and plugged in. So as long as you don't plug your phone into the wall nothing should happen.

It's been "ported" but there's some stuff specifically compiled for the 4s so they'll need to get a 4s and see how it actually works to see if it's portable

Sorry if this is newbish but I haven't really gotten into nuts and bolts poo poo with jailbreaking since before I got rid of my 3G over a year ago. With iOS 5 officially dropping basically right now, let me be most recent guy to stick my neck out and say "how exactly should I do this?" and I'm assuming a lot of people are probably in a similar situation.

I have a jailbroken 4 running 4.3.3. I don't have a ton of JB stuff installed, in fact the only things I have at the moment are BiteSMS, SBSettings and their dependencies. To the best of my knowledge I have all of my SHSH stuff saved properly with Cydia.

I want to jump on iOS 5 now. I see a lot of people saying that the best route to take here is to just set up as a new phone with iOS 5. I'm not opposed to the idea, but I'd like to think I can just remove my installed JB apps in Cydia, backup one last time, and restore to 5 using my backup without any adverse effects. I don't really care about jailbreaking iOS 5 right away. I can live without BiteSMS and SBSettings, I'd rather have vanilla 5.0 than JB'd 4.3.3.

Just to triple check here (forgive me if I have completely misunderstood everyting I have read) - using the standard "update" option in iTunes is not at all what I should be doing, right? I have to restore either as new or from backup pretty much no matter what, correct? But faced with those choices, do I sync my contacts to gmail and restore as a new phone or is there no practical reason not to just restore from my backup?

Do'h. My ipod's battery died in the middle of the night. Today I plugged it in to charge for about five minutes on the apple logo (it's tethered so it can't progress past that screen), then rebooted it into DFU and ran redsn0w. When it was all ready the battery meter said 100%, but quickly drained to 50%, so I decided to leave it unplugged a minute to let the battery meter normalize before recharging it all the way... and accidentally let it run dry again. :downs:

Yes but I also enjoy charging phone from time to time.

My issue is to whether 3G Unrestrictor is allowing the backups to happen even if not on wifi if I already unrestrict, say iTunes (random example).

Found this, might be helpful for the curious:

http://thebigboss.org/ posted:

iOS 5 is out today. For those of you jailbreakers, you should be aware of the status. You may want to hold off on the update for now because the jailbreak is tethered:

1) A tethered jailbreak is available via redsn0w for all devices except iPad 2 and the new iPhone 4s.

2) Tethered jailbreak means you will have to use redsn0w to enter DFU mode and have it “just boot tethered” every time you power cycle your device. (Just tapping power is fine, you have to actually shut it off).

3) After you run redsn0w, even the very first time, you will have a white cydia icon. This is because you have to still power cycle, enter DFU mode, and boot tethered. The next reboot will come after you install something that requires mobile substrate (almost everything). After installing this, the device will only hit apple logo unless you do the boot tethered option.

4) If iOS5 turns out to be stable, tethered jailbreak may be manageable for many of you. But be aware that if something happens while you’re away from your computer and your device restarts, you will have to get to a computer before you can use your device again. This is probably not so bad for an ipod or ipad. Maybe not great for your only phone.

5) Many free and paid tweaks have not yet been updated. Developers are working on updates so be patient.

6) Non-factory unlockers should stay away from ios5 for now or you will lose your unlock! (This should go without saying).

7) iOS 4.3.4 and 4.3.5 is also tethered, so 4.3.3 is the only firmware that can be jailbroken untethered for now.

8) Improperly written notification center add-ons may cause your device to be in a reboot cycle. A mobilesubstrate update is due out later this week that will protect you against this. To protect yourself in the meantime, make sure you have openSSH installed so you are able to manually delete any notification center tweaks you install should this happen to you. Otherwise, you will have to restore and jailbreak again.

In other words, just to be safe, don't install or update anything via Cydia unless you are near a computer you can run redsn0w from, especially if on your iPhone.

I'm curious to see if we'll see an iPad 2 // 4S jailbreak in the near future.

I'm guessing either it's hard to exploit the A5 chip or they've been holding onto something new until iOS 5 and the 4S came out. Either way, no new Jailbreak since 4.3.3 means something.

I'm pretty sure they were holding off on more jailbreaks after 4.3.3 was released to make sure the exploits they were going to use for iOS 5 weren't patched. I seem to recall a lot of the devs stating they have multiple exploits to use and test for iOS 5.
