FizzyJuffoWup posted:As someone who is personally a die hard fan of the comics, I really enjoyed it and aside from basic things and who knows what in the future, I like that they've somewhat gone in a different direction with the show. That way you're not just seeing an adaptation. I'm kind of getting on the "zombies are overplayed" wagon but as someone who just loves good AMC programming, this definitely fits in with the club. Not to mention the effects and what AMC is willing to let them put on TV is top notch stuff. I'm glad that this season will be a full 13 or 14 episodes, but I do not like that it will be split up in half so that 6 air from October and then the remainder resume in February. Oh well. I honestly thought that the writing got worse as the show went on, which was a major bummer. The last few episodes, especially the season finale were just awful in terms of writing and direction. But hey, the zombies are cool as gently caress and the source material is awesome.

(Crossposted from the Review the Latest Movie You've Seen thread) Love and Death (1975) (rewatch, Netflix Instant Watch) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073312/ A generation has passed and it's well worth revisiting Woody Allen's early comedies for those who have never seen them, films such as Sleeper, Love and Death, Play it Again, Sam, and Bananas. Annie Hall gets a lot more attention, perhaps deservedly so, but Love and Death is perhaps his most consistently hilarious. Allen plays his well known nebbish persona, as a Russian serf who has his ups and downs, getting impressed into the wars against Napoleon, becoming a war hero, romantic escapades, and getting involved in an unlikely plot to assassinate Napoleon. For all the satire on pretentious philosophy, Dostoyevsky and Bergman that is here, the film's big strength is a dense and continuous stream of hilarious jokes and one liners that hit at a pretty consistent rate. Annie Hall may be in many ways a better film for taking a poignant look at human relationships, but I don't know that there many films, made by Allen or anyone else, that deliver constant laughs the way this one does. Even those with little or no familiarity with the cultural references in the film should find it funny and entertaining as hell. Diane Keaton is excellent as the female lead and shows great comedic chops, a far cry from playing "straight" to Allen in Annie Hall. 4.5/5

Case 39 is the heartwarming true story of a social worker and the little girl she saves from an abusive home. Highly recommended, just remember to bring the tissues 'cause this one's a tearjerker.

Season one was okay after it got going, but George was really grating during the first few episodes, so I skipped straight to two.

For anyone that hasn't heard yet, Netflix changed their mind about splitting off the dvd portion of their business. Qwikster or whatever it was called, is not to be.

If that doesn't sound appealing to you, Annie Hall is his consensus best movie.

Castaway on the Moon Charming, quirky, hilarious at times. Quite touching. I love the costume design for the girl.

Castaway on the Moon is fantastic, so glad I got to see it with the director in attendance. Apparently it was a commercial failure and he sweetened super bummer about that, but it's really adorable and well made.

I highly recommend Black Plague. Basically, Sean Bean and his band of merry men go into a swamp so they can burn some witches. It's really dark and moody, and the closest thing we have to a film version of Warhammer Fantasy. Also, I'm pretty sure the Game of Thrones casting director watched this movie immediately decided that Carice van Houten needed to be Melissandre.

It doesn't appear to be too far off on the historical accuracy, either.

A word of warning to any who may watch Battlestar Galactica (and you should. It's excellent.) When you get to the three part season finale, have the DVDs ordered, don't watch it streaming (if you're approaching the end of the series, order the discs in advance). Streaming only has the broadcast version, the DVDs have extended versions which include some major things, like epilogues for some main characters and a whole flashback subplot for Roslin. e: and I realize I posted this same info like 6 months ago. Two, it is funny on many levels, not just stoner hurr hurr. There's elements of philosophy and literature in there that someone with a higher (re: college level) education can appreciate. Its not necessarily a feel good movie, or a comedy. Though there are elements of both in there. And its an easy viewing, no real flow issues or boring stretches that I could tell with my unpracticed eye. Well, I am happy to say you were completely right. Season 3 of Damages is on instant watch. I'm not sure if it's worth watching if you haven't seen the previous seasons because they are somewhat intertwined. It's a unique show that I enjoy but be prepared to hate nearly every character because most of them are the worst of humanity.

I still liked season 2 plenty but season 3 was just a whole lot of who the gently caress gives a poo poo about Tom, I mean really? Didn't even feel bad at his funeral. But that Chanel bag was dreamy? Meh. I need to watch Season 4 though because I really want it to be good again.

WeWereSchizo posted:You are a wonderful human being. The movie was fantastic and I'm gonna be following it up with more Woody soon. Glad you enjoyed this. It's probably at least 20 years since I originally saw it and I forgot how drat funny it was. Yeah I would also put "Annie Hall" as a top priority, it's hilarious but a great film for a lot of other reasons as you'll see. Opinions vary a lot on the rest of his work, a lot of the stuff after "Manhattan" I'm not too fond of. Unfortunately "Annie Hall" is not currently on Instant Watch, but it comes on and off of it. Sometimes you'll see "Sleeper" and "Play It Again, Sam" on IW, other funny early movies. I think my favorite one liner from "Love and Death" was when Sonia (Keaton) says "sex without love is an empty experience" and he replies "yes, but as empty experiences go, it's the best." That and his crazy peasant dad with the little plot of land.

So I watched Conan O'Brien Can't Stop thinking it would be mostly his stand up with a little bit of behind the scenes. Instead I was treated to a disheveled looking Conan being a massive douche bag to his crew and everyone around him laughing uncomfortably because he is the boss. I don't know if he is going for some kind of Andy Kaufman thing where the joke is on the audience, but it left a really bad taste in my mouth. _ don't think I can be team CoCo anymore.

I didn't get that impression at all. His sense of humor is a lot more sarcastic and deadpan when he's not on stage, just because there isn't a rimshot and laugh track after every joke doesn't mean he isn't, in fact, joking. I very much prefer that style of comedy, his standup is way too scripted, he's always been the funniest when he's not reading of a prompter(like when he went to Canada, or to Finland, for example).

Metropolis is on Netflix. It's probably the most watchable silent film ever made, despite being almost a century old the special effects are incredible even if the plot is pretty simplistic. Just think of it as your great-great-great grandparent's equivalent of Avatar and you'll have a blast. Also, if you've only seen public domain versions or the 80s/Moroder soundtrack, the original Gottfried Huppertz soundtrack makes it even more amazing. I just watched Little Big Soldier on Netflix, it's a Jackie Chan movie made last year and set against the backdrop of 3rd century BC China's political drama. It's about a somewhat pacifistic soldier who captures an enemy general and tries to escort him home for the reward. It's got a little bit of Jackie's trademark slapstick fighting, but I saw it more as a vessel for him to show off his acting chops. Even still, it's often laugh-out-loud funny and a pretty good all around movie.

The guy had just gotten screwed out of the dreamjob of every talkshow host on earth, was banned from tv for several months, and put together a show for his fans with no notice and went on a grueling road tour so he could give people a show, and let himself be filmed constantly the entire time. I think that sort of excuses the crabbiness. He is a performer, he isn't Conan from TV 24 hours a day. That would be weird. Anyway, it was a pretty good movie if you followed the saga at all or like seeing celebrities out of their normal polished element. edit: it is very similar to the Jerry Seinfeld "Comedian" documentary.

I got the same vibe from the Conan documentary. There were a couple of parts where he especially looked like a dick. When someone was closing his door in the car after he left a venue he was a dick to the guy and said something along the lines of will you close the loving door already. I liked that he left all that in the documentary because it showed a whole different side of Conan and it made me respect him more because he is crabby and pissed off just like the rest of us. It seems like all I have ever heard or seen was that Conan was this great amazing nice guy but it shows even he gets pissed like a normal human being. Has there ever been any talk of them putting The Shield on streaming? I see other F/X shows on there but not that one and I have always wanted to do a second time watch through.
