If setting the Sustain Level in the ENV to around 7, you can obtain a howling sound.

Hey folks, what Talk Talk album would be a good starting point? I've only heard "Its my life" so far, but I really enjoy the vocals. According to allmusic (bleh) there is a big stylistic leap between each album, so I'm not too sure where to jump in.

I would just start from where you've already started and go on in chronological order. The Colour of Spring is great, and Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock even better. The shift in style isn't so big if you listen in order, it's more of an evolution. Spirit of Eden is probably my favorite, the sweet spot for me over their career.

Also, don't overlook Mark Hollis's self titled album in essentially the same style as late Talk Talk.

Thanks for the tip. It took me a while to warm up to his voice, probably due to some sort of vocal tic or just the airiness of it.

Anyone have something that's basically more Bonobo? Recently listened to all of his stuff and I love it but I wish there was more. Also, always looking for more stuff similar to Caravan Palace / very upbeat electroswing (Lyre le Temps was suggested last time, but they have like one song I enjoy and the rest either have vocals too cheesy for me to enjoy or isn't nearly as upbeat as I'd prefer.)

While a lot of his music is incredibly off the wall, Frank Zappa falls under a great lyricist as well. Sure, a lot of it is basically novelty music, but there's quite a bit of it that is actually remotely approaching serious as well, such as Heavenly Bank Account.

I'm probably going to catch a load of poo poo over this, but since there's not a Jazz thread that I noticed and I'm curious about the Genre is there a specific style that's similar to Yoko Kanno's work on Cowboy Bebop? I've skimmed Pandora a bit (specifically the Bebop station) but either her work is only Jazz-inspired or I'm looking in the wrong place. I appreciate any suggestions given that Jazz is one of the few "main" genres I haven't exposed myself to much so far.

Edit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2rVnRwW0h8 For reference, as I just realized it's a bit dumb not to give an example. It's the high energy of the piece that I'm hoping to find more of, as a lot of the Bebop station on Pandora, as well as the "exemplary" Bebop seems rather low energy.

Yeah, the Tank! track is more jazz inspired than anything else, it's not really within a solid vein/sub-genre of jazz. So you're not going to find an old, actual full album with this kind of thing. The solo style in Tank! is pretty much sped up Hard Bop, not Bebop. So for straight jazz recs you may check out Art Blakey, earlier Coltrane, Lee Morgan, Horace Silver, etc. Basically the late 50's / early 60's Blue Note heavy hitters.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1GrP6thz-k
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGQ3S-niKaM

The backing track of Tank! is really a riff on the 60's big band / commercial / cinema sound. Big beat / now sound stuff that was produced a lot in Europe for movie or commercial use. Definitely a niche genre but there's a lot of compilation CDs out there for it, although they'll tend to toe into lounge and bossa influenced stuff. General mod / groovy sound. Google "eurospy" or just "spy jazz" and you'll get a bunch of stuff.

I'm looking for music that's from the 50s/60s (or sounds like it is) that has a slow tempo with sparse arrangements--usually just a singer and a bass and maybe a guitar and drums and/or finger snaps--as well as soul/blues tinged and mostly showcase the vocals.

Since I am doing a horrible job trying to describe it, I want music like this:
Elvis Presley - Fever
Nancy Sinatra - Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)
Serge Gainsbourg - Le Claqeur de Doigts
She & Him - I Put a Spell On You

I know a few of these are covers but pretty much any version of the songs fits what I'm looking for. Thanks.

How about the Mills Brothers? Depending on what era you go for I reckon that it would fit the bill, I think the late 40's/early 50's had the most instrumentation, even ventured into big band/swing territory, but it was still ALL about their voices

I really like hip-hop that follows this criteria:

1) Well used samples.

2) Lyrical content that goes beyond "We're hard motherfucks and we get that cash". I enjoy those songs sometimes, but I enjoy conscious thought, too.

3) As a primer, I enjoy Beastie Boys, Wu-Tang, and I've downloaded a couple singles off of Cold Vein by Cannibal Ox. A little help?
