In House Louse's defense, you could get all those characteristics from an episode of Maria-sama Ga Miteru (swapping "husband" out for "fiancee") and no one would question a statement that it was quasi-yuri fanservice.

Probably because that's when it's set.

On a side note, I really liked how Urobuchi stuck a bit of gun porn in for Kiritsugu's equipment. He's using a Walther WA2000 with night vision/thermal scope for sniping, a Calico M960 as a backup weapon, and a customized Thompson Contender with magic bullets for his mystic code.

Wait, what?

Not porn, just teasing. Did I misuse "yuri" there? But there were to my mind pretty strong overtones in the sequence of Sabre describing herself as Iris' knight and calling her a princess, taking her on a walk through Fuyuki and winding up at a moonlit beach where Iris invites her to go for a swim. And they're clearly marked as a "butch"/"femme" pair too - Sabre with her stylish trouser suit and Iris in a long dress. And I know we're not supposed to mention it, but what genre was the original VN anyway? It's not especially welcome, but is a little light fanservice such a surprise?

Edit: I'm not arguing that this is all their scenes were! Just that it was some subtext in their interactions.

And come to think of it, I'm not actually certain if Fate/Zero has eroge content or not.

I just realized they cut out one of my favorite Rider scenes from the part where Rider and Waver are observing on top of the bridge.

Spoiled in case they fit it in next episode (or the DVD/BD release) and for people that haven't watched the episode yet.

quote:

"If you're bored, read the book I entrusted to you. It's a good book."

Hearing that, Waver remembered about the stupid weight in the knapsack hanging on his shoulder. In this situation where they shouldn't afford even one unnecessary gram, the poetry anthology with its thick hard cover really is a dead weight.

That was the one book Rider looted from the library he raided right when he arrived in the present world. The 'Iliad' written by the poet Homer in ancient Greece― the epic poem describing the Trojan war, in which fought gods and humans jumbled together.

The atlas can be okay. Exaggerating about world conquest, Rider takes interest in the geography of the modern world, even if it sounds foolish.

But what's with a poetry anthology? Rider set up a library at home even though he was preparing for war, and yet he still insisted in bringing the Iliad with him. Naturally, if he wants to bring anything that isn't his regular equipment, he would need to remain materialized; if he needs to dematerialize to hide from the other people, then after all, it's Waver who ends up having to carry the luggage.

Certainly, Rider insisted that the book was "preparation for war". But how on Earth can a book that isn't even about war strategy be helpful on the battlefield?

"Rider... Why, did you, bring this book?"

At Waver's bitter question, the Heroic Spirit answered with a grave expression.

"The Iliad is very profound. At the height of battle, I would suddenly get the urge to read a verse of poetry. At a time like that, I feel bad when I can't reread something immediately."

"..."

He feels like his interlocutor just gave him a bullshit answer, but fear stops him from arguing back.

"At a time like that, you mean... In battle?"

"Yes."

Rider nods nonchalantly as if his reply was perfectly normal.

"... But how?"

"With my left hand, when I hold my sword in my right hand. If I need to hold the bridle with my left hand, I get a page to read it aloud."

"..."

Waver felt at loss for words at the unimaginable answer.

"It isn't that surprising. The warriors of my era all lived a life of battle. Battling while drinking and eating, embracing women while battling, battling even while sleeping. Anyone can do that."

Just ask him and he won't stop. This man does seem like he could do all that, but...

"You're kidding, right?"

"Of course. You fool."

He sniggered and gave an exploding flinch on Waver's forehead.

"Gyaa---h!!"

He didn't have the time to worry, let alone dodge. At any rate, there he was, clinging on the steel frame with all his might with both arms and legs. Waver couldn't even rub his pained forehead, as he could only howl with an unbecoming shriek.

"Hey, kid, anyone would laugh at a joke like that. When your face turns blue like that, it's because you have no guts."

Ignoring Rider's frank laugh, the magus strongly regretted choosing this Heroic Spirit as he shed tears from the pain on his forehead.

"I wanna go back... Go back to England..."

"I told you not to rush like that. Here, things are moving up at last."

"... Eh?"

Rider points at the seaside park with a stern chin.

And the rest plays out exactly the same as in the episode.

Yeah I dunno, I saw zero romantic overtones between Iris and Saber, but I'm really familiar with the source material and series it's a prequel to, so. v:shobon:v

To me I just saw Saber kind of opening up to someone else who has pretty much been forced into a specific role their entire life and hasn't gotten to really experience anything themselves. It's a lot like Saber's decision to become the king of England, which was kind of touched on in the previous episode. Neither of them has had the freedom to even do something as mundane as go enjoy walking around and seeing the sites of a simple city, and Saber kind of realizing and appreciating that, gives in to Iris' wish to enjoy their time before the Grail War starts up in full.

I mean, now that you've mentioned it I can kind of see what you mean, but Saber doesn't even see herself as a woman. She is a knight and a king first and foremost. That concept really got pounded into your head in the Fate route of the story and anime.

So Assassin was actually the Society of Assassins? Like the one that shows up in weird conspiracy histories? Or maybe it's Hassan-i Sabbah and he comes with a bunch of dudes as a bonus. In any case that's pretty cool. This seems alright so far, but I don't have any real attachment to any of the characters, Sabre seems cool, Rider and Waver are amusing, there's a bunch of other people too, but I don't really care yet.

Ah the joys of trying to jump into a story that apparently has a poo poo-ton of backstory to it.

Love the anime'd up version of the historical depictions in the end credits.

The best part of the Holy Grail War is how nearly everyone cheats like mad. Of course it's not like there's any reason not to, since there are pretty much two possible outcomes for each participant:

1) Death
2) REAL ULTIMATE POWER

How are the supervisors (who of course were cheating first and hardest) going to punish you? :v:

Well the mage association is mentioned somewhat more in the UBW and HF routes (which have a much larger Rin involvement) as I recall but yeah.

Things happen at the end of this war, it doesn't complete correctly or something and so it's re-activated much sooner than it should have. I can't remember the exact mechanism but I believe it's discussed in HF.

Well, consider that Shirou is a lovely mage, with not only no formal training, but incorrect training, Rin is cursed with loving things up no matter what and lost her dad kind of early in her life, so missed out on training she should've had, Lancer's and Caster's masters (who were Mage Association people) got killed before it all even started, Rider was being used by a mage without any magic, and Assassin was an entirely different different can of worms. Pretty much Ilya was about the only thing even close to a proper mage in FSN and she wasn't even human.

They'd explained it at this point in the novel, but Kiritsugu/Maiya do use bat familiars, just ones fitted with cameras for later review, and because the cameras frequently see right through magical illusions. The team that wasn't detected observing Tohsaka's house was probably Team Caster, those two are off in their own little universe.
