I'll ask here since no one in the iPhone thread knew:

I didn't realize that switching over from Mobile Me to iCloud would not carry over Notes synching anymore and I have a bunch of notes on my iPhone 4 that I really need on my 4S (it didn't carry over because my 4S is a new phone line). Where in OS X can I find the Notes in my 4's backup so I can replace the Notes in my 4S?

i posted here over the weekend saying i'd fried my old bootrom 3gs with the ios5 update. i'm back running a 4.3.3 backup from 3 months ago, luckily it has most of the data i was concerned about.

so it's looking like if i want to go to ios5 i'm not going to be able to restore the data from my 4.3.3 install, and i'll have to migrate the important stuff manually.

i can use datadeposit to back up my apps, but is there a simple way to backup and restore my contacts? i'm set up with my google account but it seems only new contacts get stored there, i don't know how to copy all of them. i don't really mind losing saved txt msgs but phone numbers are really important

e: wooo i asked itunes to sync all contacts with my google account and it looks like it uploaded all of them from my phone. badass

That's the odd thing; that is definitely turned on, but I think because the notes I need are on my older phone and were created before iCloud was activated, the old notes won't upload.

Yep, same problem here. The most obvious and pain-in-the-rear end solution would be to select-copy-paste into new notes in the iCloud folder...

$0.99 for a functional SOCKS proxy to allow a non-jailbroken phone to share its connection seems like a bargain to me. How is that a waste?

I've tested this on my iPhone 4S already, and it seemed to work fine.

It's a SOCKS proxy. It works as expected, not "like poo poo".

I don't mean that the features it offers is poo poo, I mean that all the reviews I read said that it didn't work as advertised and only in very specific limited situations. Such as you had to have a Mac. Was just throwing out a dissenting opinion so people did some more research before plunking down the $.99. Others felt cheated after paying for it.

I felt cheated because of how idiotic the instructions were. The instructions were poo poo, things misspelled all over, bad grammar, *incorrect* information, etc. Of course it didn't work for people.

As a SOCKS proxy, it is for Web browsing. You're sharing your 3G connection with web-browsers only. Don't expect anything "Internet" related to work unless it is SOCKS compatible.

Instructions if you have the "PayUpSucker" app:

1) Create an ad-hoc network on your Computer.
2) Join your iPhone to the ad-hoc network.
3) Give your iPhone a static IP such as 10.0.0.1/255.0.0.0.
4) Give your Computer a static IP such as 10.0.0.2/255.0.0.0.
5) Set your Computer to use SOCKS proxy on the iPhone (10.0.0.1, port 8888).
6) Launch PayUpSucker, tap "IOU", and write "Its my data" (exactly that, without quotes).

You should then be able to load your web browser. The app must remain open and running (it will keep the screen on). Backgrounding the app or turning off the screen will break the connection. You have to manually close and re-open the app (and repeat step 6) to get the SOCKS proxy running again.

Do you think when the iOS 5 untethered jailbreak is out the iPhone 4S will at least have a tethered jailbreak?

I'm thinking about updating my iPhone 4 to iOS 5 tethered jailbreak from 4.3.3 untethered jailbreak till the 4S is jailbroken and I"ll sell my iPhone 4 then.

Yes. I reverted back to 4.3.3 from iOS 5 beta 6. But I've been reading that since iOS 5 has come out they stopped allowing you to go back to earlier firmwares. Is that still a possibility?

I'm fairly confident that you can revert back if you have 5.0.

Though it probably won't preserve your baseband which means you can't unlock if you go from 4.3.3 > 5.0 > 4.3.3

If you can wait on selling it, I'd be willing to bet money that iOS5 will be unteathered jailbroken and an unlock will follow shortly after.

That'll be your best bang for your buck, assuming you can wait.

Though when I sold my 3Gs's someone outright bought my 4.0 3Gs for the same price I sold my unlocked 3.x because they knew in the future they'd be able to unlock it, so YMMV

I can wait. I don't want to sell my 4 till the 4S is jailbroken. I have a feeling when the 4S is jailbroken they will have an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 for the 4.

in the instructions i think it warns you that you'll get an all white icon until it reboots or something.. oh here it is:

"If you see a white icon for Cydia, or if Cydia or Safari crash when you open them, it’s because you didn’t boot tethered."

Well managed to trace what was locking up Mail (even after reboots). It was BBSettings of all thing. Uninstalling it seem to have sorted out all issues I was having. So it looks like the dev still have some bugs to iron out.

Once it's in recovery mode I just hold the power down and it'll boot up just fine.

redsn0w can put it in DFU mode without me touching it?

The timer seems to lag and be slow at times when redsn0w does the counting. I got it into DFU mode twice when I jailbroke it but now I can't seem to do it.

EDIT: I got it now. redsn0w was saying hold the power button for 3 seconds THEN hold the power and home button. I just held the home and power button for 10 seconds then let go of power button and it worked.

EDIT2: Now that I rebooted it after installing biteSMS it's obviously stuck at the Apple logo. I can't turn it off to get it into DFU mode too boot tethered.

Might be different since I'm still on 4.3.5, but for me when this happens, if you hold down power and home for about 3-5 seconds it'll turn off, and then immediately go from that into the DFU instructions.

Keeps getting put into recovery mode instead :(

EDIT: this is ridiculous. Why are there so many different ways people are telling you to do this? It's like there is no sure way of getting your phone into DFU mode.

Finally had a chance to jailbreak 5.0 (iphone4), and I was running into the similar DFU-mode trouble. Following the redsn0w instructions wouldn't work, so instead I would just hold power+sleep to turn off (no slide), then letting go of sleep while the phone was booting, and it would kick it into DFU every time.

Release power before you see the Apple logo - that's what tripped me up. I did it like this: redsn0w is on the "pleas make sure your device is off screen". While the phone was on (either waiting for recovery or simply 'on'), I would hold power and home until it shutdown - the "slide to unlock" message would pop up, but then the phone would shut off automatically. At that point release the sleep button (still hold home), and redsn0w would almost immediately pick it up for the reboot.

So yes, it's iOS 5 only...

Edit: And looks like poo poo on an iPad. It has the regular iPod/iPhone length so it doesn't even fill up the notification center pull down.
