A thought just occurred to me. How is the delta-updating that iOS5 implemented for version upgrades going to impact jailbreaking? Will there be any fundamental changes or will this just change how you update your phone? Obviously we do not have any experience to base off of, but wondered if this has already been discussed.

Any decent packaged JB for iOS 5 will likely disable deltas. Or if not it will be some essential Cydia upgrade like those PDF exploit patchers.

Do we even know if delta updates are invisible like that? Frankly even unjailbroken I'd be miffed if my phone OTA updated without even asking me if it could.

Apple said the delta updates will be installed manually, not in some background secret updater script, so it should be too much of a problem.

edit: at least, that's how the beta worked.

Will fully packaged updates (as they were pre-iOS5) still be available?

I doubt main updates will be stealthed but they could easily patch "security" risks OTA much like they have rushed .X.1 firmware updates that only address the exploit.

That said, I think one of the JB crew mentioned that JB disables OTA updates so maybe they already covered themselves.

4.3.3 or 4.3.5 I think (assuming you have the SHSHs)

Is it just me or is my battery weak?

Ever since I installed iOS 5 and jailbroke it with Redsn0w 0.9.9b5 my battery seems to be going down almost a percent every few minutes when the screen is on. Maybe it's just me but all the sudden after charging it a little on my way home from work it seems to be going down fast.

How old is your phone? The battery may be going bad. Have you tried using iOS 5 without the jailbreak on your phone and if you have did you notice batter issues? Here are some ways to extend you battery some:
Reset Network Settings: Tap on “Settings” > Reset > Reset Network Settings
Disable Bluetooth: Settings > General > Bluetooth > “OFF”
Disable unwated Notifications & apps: Settings > Notifications > Turn OFF for anything you don’t need
Disable Location Service: Settings > Location Services > Disable selectively for services you don’t use
Disable Timezone Adjustment: Tap on “Settings” > “Location Services” > ‘System Services’ > Setting Time Zone to OFF
Disable Ping: Settings > General > Restrictions > Enable Restrictions > Ping > OFF
Disable Diagnostic & Usage Reports: Tap on “Settings” > General > About > Diagnostic & Usage > Don’t Send

If none of those help I would try doing a clean install of iOS 5

So I backed up my SHSH with cydia if I recall but I think that stores it on their server. Is that all I need to do as far as backing that poo poo up?

I posted this in the iPhone thread, but it may be better suited here:

So, I sold my iPhone 4 4.3.1 on eBay. I'm trying to reset and delete everything on there, but it won't let me because it's jail broken. So, I've tried restoring to a virgin 4.3.1 and jail breaking from there...but iTunes is giving me every error in the book and after being hours into this problem and hours of google searches....

...would I be safe to just unsync everything instead? so all of my music, notes, apps, photos, etc are all off??

Oh, and if you want to restore it to stock, just put it into DFU mode and restore it to stock 4.3.1 (Since Apple isn't saving 4.3.1 you'll need to have tiny umbrella running with it's fake server and your SHSH keys going) Or just restore it to stock iOS 5. Depends on what you told the seller I guess.

I keep getting error 2005 and I swap out the USB port I'm using like google days, but it's still error 2005 after setting up the tiny umbrella server.

Using a brand new USB cable, the one I got with my 4S. I get an error 1604 if I don't use iREB to put it into a jailbroken state to be restored.

Yeah I'm not sure exactly what happened. I played it safe and restored from fresh, re-jailbroke, then restored apps with DataDeposit and now everything is working fine.

I imagine it was just too much junk in my backup. I was probably riding that since late '09 or so when I got a replacement 3G? I'd never restored from fresh since then

If you just want to keep all your real app data (non jailbroken) and game saves, backup in iTunes, then upgrade from there and then sync afterwards. It will sync everything on there back to the phone.

Some jailbroken settings will persist, but not all.

Having stuff like winterboard installed also runs your battery faster than normal. If none of that works I would do a factory restore and go and try and get the battery/phone replaced if it bothers you a lot.

GOING APE SPIT
Is there any reason TinyUmbrella would refuse to see any plugged in devices? Neither my iPhone 4 or iPad 1 show up. My iPad and two different 3GS's used to work. iTunes sees everything just fine. Is there anything in the new iTunes 10.5 (such as new device drivers) that would break TinyUmbrella? I've performed the following troubleshooting measures with no change:
  • Ensured TinyUmbrella was running as Administrator (happens by default now anyway)
  • Ensured all Apple services and startup items were running
  • Changed USB ports
  • Restarted the device
  • Restarted Windows
  • Backing up my .shsh folder, deleting it and starting TinyUmbrella fresh
I think I backed up my iPad's SHSHs back when Apple was about to stop signing 4.3.3, but I want to be sure before upgrading to 5.0 (and have a way of going back in case something goes wrong). Sure, I could punch in the ECIDs manually, but that's not really a solution to the problem now, is it?

I'm using TinyUmbrella v5.00.12a on Windows 7 32-bit. My iPhone 4 is on iOS 5.0 and my iPad is on 4.3.3.

Edit: I was able to pull the ECID and SHSHs for my iPad with redsn0w for the time being. I need to install Windows 7 64-bit this weekend anyway. Maybe this will all work afterwards.

After a couple days with BBSettings I have abandoned it due to taking up way too much Notification space. Until the app is collapsable I won't be using it, and it really doesn't do anything extra over SBSettings beside some graphical information of your phone.
