Gurren Lagann was amazing because of the Nietzchean "YOU CAN loving DO IT! YOU CAN DO ANYTHING BECAUSE HUMANS ARE THE MOTHERFUCKING PRESIDENTS OF BADASSERY!" element; it's very transcendentalist (minus the naturalism). Unfortunately, it was made for sane people or people who are pumped to be here or tired of being down. Denise is such a loathsome, colossal human train-cluster-fuckwreck, it wouldn't do her any good.

Gurren Lagann was also a bit poo poo, though. Last thing they'd need is this nutjob suddenly hamming it up with burning enthusiasm for her pretend world.

OP and Kat, out of curiosity, when Denise is being uncharacteristically lucid (if ever she is these days), have you ever tried directly telling her that it's okay to be act like a normal human being? I would be curious to see how she reacts, since I'd imagine someone might go all in on something loony just because they'd be afraid to admit it's all crap after spending so much time at it.

No fictional property can help people like Denise.
This kind of person doesn't really WATCH media. They're too into their own little worlds for that, they just pull the characters from them into theirs.

Certain people are so far gone it is not worth it to be friends with them. They'll just drag you down with them.

The situation does remind me of Paranoia Agent, which is about the toxicity of escapism and wish fulfillment fantasies.

I'm beginning to think that kind of person's the future. Milder versions of Denise, like most of the Tropers and fanpeople. People will stop talking to each other or challenging themselves or listening to other people, and wall themselves in with pictures of cute animals and anime porn tumblrs and fanfiction.

On many occasions I have tried to break down Denise's walls of fantasy to try and get her to the real world. The very suggestion that perhaps all the dimensions didn't work the way she thought they did and that even if they did exist we had to go on with our lives and live was too much for her, so I tried to chip away by inserting seeds of reason in the hopes that they would grow and rip down the lovely sky castle. As it turns out, inception really doesn't work unless you're that Titanic guy. She would become instantly uncomfortable, alternating between accusing me of calling her a liar, and just moping. After she transmogrifaxified into Parrier, she became flat out aggressive when questioned. One time she was trying to convince me she was a Dragon Prince and hissed at me.

SMELLS

At some point the reality that she never bathed became an uncomfortable, if necessary point of discussion. I brought up the fact that she smelled like a bison's rear end. I can't remember the exact phrasing but I'm pretty sure the word "ripe" was involved.

She told me that it was an inherited smell and that all her family smelled that way. George never stank like a disgusting pile of sweaty rear end. She claimed that if she showered, she smelled like that an hour or so later, so what was the point right?

... Right?

Yeah, this is basically it. Decently balanced people can generally read how interested someone would be in a subject and find something they can both relate on rather than forcing a singular topic down the other person's throat.

Even when I've found other anime fans, at work or elsewhere, I rarely bring the topic up unless I really think there's something of value there for both of us.

Chiming in with a "and I thought my anime friends were bad." I had one friend who unironically thought he was a martial arts master Dragon superhero, conveniently named Dragon, and that one day his true form would come out. He had a theme song (something from Linkin Park's Meteora) and everything. Then my first girlfriend spent more time talking about how she was going to marry anime guys than anything else. That lasted a whopping 3 months before I finally cut ties there, which was obviously 3 months too long. She later got addicted to FFXI, complete with an in-game boyfriend and in-game marriage which was, hilariously, presided over a goon who happened to be a GM in the game.

Thankfully I've completely cut ties with everyone from that horrible era of my life.

I also didn't really run into batshit insanity from anime fan friends, thankfully. She's pretty focused on Japan. I'd say Japan dominates. Anyone read the Orientalism theory? I think she's latched onto Japan because it's so exotic and opposite her current life. Except what she's latched onto is not the reality of Japan but her perception of it. Very romanticized.

I was chatting with Uglynoodles the other day about Japan during the Second World War, and we chortled about how it might crush her little heart to learn her preferred country isn't as innocent and pure as she wants it to be.

Anyway. There are other things she obsesses over, but Japan-related things take the cake.

As far as I know, George is Ok. We all watched anime prior to the Denise exposure, and I don't think any of us are really put off of it. I haven't watched anime for months because I haven't had the time to find something good to watch. I met Uglynoodles first, who nudged me into Escaflowne and other animes. My experience up until that point had been Digimon, Pokemon, Monster Rancher (is that even anime?) and Inu Yasha. I honestly didn't really distinguish anime as different than much of TV, except that it had a lot better stories than the Bugs Bunny and other Warner Bros cartoons my dad had raised me on.

Fairly weeaboo. She was tagged in a picture of Vocaloid or wtf it is with the long blue hair. As for language barriers, basically they can all speak English as well as whatever language they were originally in (such as Japanese for the anime people). And any languages their character was associated with.

I just caught up on this thread and jesus christ. :psyduck: I'm glad I didn't know anyone this bad while growing up. This is embarrassing to admit but the closest was my own brief period of being "married to an anime character" when I was 13-14 and even during THAT phase, I was always very aware that he wasn't real and I was just entertaining myself with fantasies. (Ironically I cannot stand the character now and think he's a piece of poo poo characterization wise. What were you thinking 13 year old me)

Anyway, uglynoodles it's been said a lot already but I'm incredibly sorry that both you and Kat had to put up with all this from her, especially with some of those last few updates. I knew from the moment when you said that what happened to you that summer would be relevant later that Denise was going to do something to piss me off and she sure as gently caress did. God what a little twat. My heart also goes out to her poor father. He sounds like a great man and being the daddy's girl of a single father myself (although admittedly from much better circumstances) the very idea of anyone putting a father like that through this sort of crap breaks my heart. Hell, I couldn't (and still can't) even sleep well at night asking my dad for money for anything except maybe lunch, much less my hobbies. I funded my teenage manga collection myself. This thread. :stare: Thank you OP and Kat for sharing, this is Final Fantasy House levels of crazy.

I will admit to my absolute worst weeaboo phase. In junior high I was into Tenchi Muyo and created some abortion that looked like a mixture of Ryoko and Ayeka, only more ~*special*~ because she was a GI Joe style hunter with giant stupid hair. Then I turned 13 and floated onto another dumb teenage interest.

I can understand liking it or relating to the characters, or finding the shallower stuff a fun watch in a "turn off your brain" kind of way. I can also see why someone would want to make some Mary Sue for their true love bishie boy character or whatever - hell, that's the basis of like 99% of Fanfiction which goes beyond anime into games, film, books, basically everything. It's harmless and fun to write or imagine yourself in the universe of your favorite fictional universe,as long as you understand it's all in your head, they don't exist, and outside of fan content on deviantart/ff.net or whatever no one gives a poo poo or wants to hear about it.

However, the disconnect that it takes to go from 'that drawing sure is cute' to 'he is real and we make astral babies' is so incredibly nuts it's almost incomprehensible. I think it's telling (and depressing) that nearly every single one of these cases is escapism taken too far to escape some awful trauma or a lovely home life.

I don't think female Touhou fans exist. While many Touhou fans are crazy, there is a difference between crazy male fans and crazy female fans, and most of the time a particular property attracts one or the other. I don't think Denise would be a fan of Touhou considering it has an all female cast, so she can't have a spirit husband or whatever, plus the games are rather difficult.
