That's the thing isn't it ? It's not really about prices with Grand Designs, it's the art and skill of designing and building homes. That and Mcloud being bitchy when people build ugly things.

I think this is the right place to ask this... I've been watching MasterChef Australia, and I keep seeing references to it being so much better/worse than the UK original. I want to test this out as fairly as possible, but it seems there have been zillions of different incarnations in the UK alone. What was the best series of MasterChef UK, or the best one for me to start with?

there are two more apparently. And yeah it's okay, it's not particularly clever or hilarious but for what it is it's an enjoyable show. I especially like Vod, that actress' delivery is excellent

The ending to Fades was good. Some questionable writing overall w/ regards to the relationships and their arcs but this was made up for by the quality present in other parts.

My big contention was with the shock at the death of Jay. It's presented and elicited as a shock but the POV is entirely from what she means to Paul and how she relates to Paul rather than any quality in her own character, which I found hard enough to define at the best of times. It reminded me when the lady that could teleport died in Misfits in that she was brought in to serve the arc of the main character but without any defining features independent of this character. She felt kind of attached to raise the stakes somewhat. It worked, but it was very annoying to see happen.

I'm just watching Grand Designs now and my god these people... I think the best way to sum them up would be greedy, inconsiderate, and devoid of taste. The wife in particular seems intolerable. And those hats, those stupid loving hats.

Good design for the building though, considering the limitations imposed by the stupid choice of location. The basement construction was very impressive. I can't help but wonder how much better it could have been if they had built outside of the city though.

JP is easily the most engaging character. The characters you're obviously supposed to care about the most are the ones I care about the absolute least. You could completely axe Kingsley and Josie and all you'd lose is some "will they? won't they?" bullshit.

JP is a poo poo, but he's enjoyable to watch when he's being a right bastard and when he's acting visibly broken, he has the most genuine pathos. Kingsley/Josie are just shits. Mostly Josie. She's pretty abhorrent.

Yeah, it's weird. I was completely underwhelmed by the first episode. The second didn't do much for me either, apart from the bit when Josie's boyfriend was being rude to Kingsley. But then from the third episode onward it's become really good and I've genuinely warmed to the characters. The Vod/Oregon relationship is really lovely, Howard is interesting, and Jack Whitehall is amazingly actually likeable!

I know, I was trying so hard to be scornful while we watched it but I couldn't fight it after the third episode - it turns out actually to be a bit alright and stuff. Gary tank commander is the best one in it I think (and his beat the buffet system is disturbingly similar to mine) I nearly shat my trousers as well when I realised that Vod had been in an episode of misfits which is this sunday aaaahhhh so close!

Your President approves this text.
That headline makes it sound worse than it is (though it's still lovely)

That Broadcast Article posted:

BBC4 documentaries like Wellington Bomber, Spitfire Women and The Secret Life of the National Grid are to be a thing of the past as the channel is stripped of its history budget.

History and business commissioner Martin Davidson will cease ordering shows for Richard Klein’s channel from 2013/14 onwards, under Delivering Quality First proposals that have been put to the Trust.

The BBC initially told Broadcast that BBC4 would continue to schedule history programmes. However, it later conceded that this would be largely through documentaries “with an element of history”, commissioned through other genre’s budgets, such as arts.

The proposals will also mean a significant reduction in science programming on the channel. BBC2 will start commissioning more from both genres, but it is unclear whether the additional budget will offset what has been lost from BBC4.

A BBC spokeswoman told Broadcast: “The DQF proposals include reinvestment of up to £10m for specialist factual on BBC2, which will become the prominent home of history. If the proposals go ahead, it means there will be no history funding on BBC4 from 2013/14.

“This will increase the distinctiveness between BBC2 and BBC4, with the latter remaining a multi-genre channel but focusing more on music, arts and culture, as well as being the main channel on which we showcase our archive.”

She declined to comment on how much of the history budget was previously spent on BBC4, or how many history hours it ordered.

The relationship between BBC2 and BBC4 has been a cause for concern for some time. At the start of 2010, the precursor to DQF – Putting Quality First – sought to differentiate them by bolstering BBC4’s factual and drama while cutting back on comedy and entertainment, and vice versa for BBC2.

BBC4 will now keep comedy – one of the corporation’s editorial priorities – while BBC2 is to lose some fact ent and comedy ent.

If they're still actually producing the science and history stuff for BBC2 then ok, but I doubt it will be of the same quality and often niche but entertaining variety. That was always 4's strong point.

It's quite telling that in the episode in which she has her brains blown out, Jay doesn't actually have any lines on screen. She stopped being a character back in episode 2.
