I really, really like the Sega Genesis vibe of Escape Pod. Makes me want to play Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine even though I am absolutely poo poo at puzzle games. Not to mention Davesprite, the 8-bit Carefree Action, etc. Also drat is Black Hole/Green Sun good, along with every part featuring in the Act 5 finale, gently caress man. But I think the song I'm replaying most is Hussie Hunt. Don't know why... I just really like it. And its artwork makes me laugh

The remix of Even in Death is honestly probably the best thing I have ever heard come out of the music team. That violin is loving haunting.

To be honest, it's not my favorite album. The main line of Homestuck and Alternia volumes have basically been getting exponentially better with each release up until now, but personally Vol 8 seems like a half-step back. There are a lot of excellent cinematic score type pieces, which is very thematically appropriate for where in the story it's getting released, but for me that just doesn't add up to a lot of must-listen pieces. Also I think my mind just subconsciously rejects it because it doesn't have enough Doctor remixes. "Wait," it says. "That thing I just listend to only had like maybe half a Doctor remix. It can't possibly be a Homestuck album." C'mon, music team dudes. We need more fuckin Doctor remixes. Hussie Hunt is a delightful change of pace, though. I dunno, maybe this will be one of those albums that grows on me.

Dr Snofeld posted:Also Do You Remem8ber Me might be my favourite Homestuck song of all time. Unite Synchronization pumps me the hell up and makes me get tons of poo poo done. It's like the song is compressed Husslific energy. Also it reminds me of Dave for some reason, probably the art. Drift into the Sun has a really nice ending to it, too. There's way too much good stuff to mention on this album. I didn't listen to a single song before I bought it, either (well, aside from the flash). It's gotten to the point I don't need to guess if the asking price will be worth it or not. The best surprise of all when I realized Volume 8 was out was seeing how big it was, and then learning that only a few of the songs were the ones in the flash, so we got all the flash music (including the entire compilation, which I thought for sure would be broken up into individuals) AND loads more. Just tons of awesome material that we've never even heard before. Buff Skeleton fucked around with this message at 01:06 on Oct 27, 2011 |

The album cover looks like a big swirly green mint candy surrounded by lollipops. I think the first thing that really strikes me about 8 is that it's representin a lot of downtempo stuff. I mean I know it's got a lot of fast paced tracks in it but the ones that slow down really stick out to me the most. Like Do You Remem8er Me, Flare, Galactic Cancer, Airtime, Gust of Heir and quite a few others. I really enjoy music that takes its time to build an atmosphere and these pretty much do it. I'm also glad to see a few ideas from Volume 5 get some attention here. I'm thinking primarily of Lotus (Bloom) and Pyrocumulus (Sicknasty). There were a lot of great tracks in 5 that seemed to get lost in the deluge of content. Personally I hope Sarabande gets reworked in something. It's a slow, nice waltz but it's got, you know, oomph. For a waltz. I also like Ocean Stars Falling. Ocean Stars is probably my favorite track in Squiddles and it's nice to hear it expanded on. Explore got rearranged in Hussie Hunt to sound like some music that would play while Abbot and Costello shuffles fearfully around in some ancient haunted house. It's pretty funny. The later section of the album has some pretty heavy stuff in it. I'm not going to pick a favorite but I'm just going to say that I've been listening to Infinity Mechanism a lot, which is by Thomas Ferkol. Between this and Dreamers and the Dead from Alterniabound I think that dude needs to put out a solo album. Then again I think a lot of these people need to put out a solo album. I still haven't sat down to give this a decent listen, I've mostly just had it playing in the background while I work. From my vague impressions I feel like some of the heavier stuff at the back of the album don't really feel like they have a central idea. Like Drift into the Sun. It kind of meanders. It's not terrible or anything, it's just kind of there. Contrast with Bargaining with the Beast, which really does sound like a dialogue between a deep thrumming string section and flitting pipes. edit: also I forgot Carefree Action because I haven't listened to this album long enough to get an impression of the very last tracks, but Carefree Victory has such a goofy fun melody that I'm happy whenever it pops up elsewhere. What I've learned from EOA5 is that Andrew Hussie is not only a master storyteller and a guy who really, really, really knows his way around colors, he's also an incredible director and (visual) composer. As far as animation goes there's nothing too groundbreaking about the EOA5 flash--motion tweening, stretching, and scaling, generally--but when it comes to him setting a scene, juxtaposing elements, etc, he can do it, and do it perfectly. This is true of pretty much all of the flashes in Homestuck but it stood out to me the most here. I want to see Hussie direct some sort of film someday.

I am very dumb, and despite kinda understanding what happens in individual scenes, I have trouble figuring out how the whole comes together (possibly because I never quite figured out the whole past/future/alternate universes deal and how they relate to each other). Does someone have a link to a handy explanation?

The god tier mechanics explanation is really interesting. Scratch's quote about Rose having a 50% chance at reaching godhood seems like funny math to me. To me, it sounds like his logic is that there's a 50% chance Rose goes god tier through option one, 50% chance through option two, and Scratch knows that she won't go with option one, therefore there's a 50% chance she'll reach god tier? Maybe he's not a gambling man just because he's bad at math.

creationist believer posted:Pop-a-matic Vrillyhoo Hammer is an awesome name for a weapon. I think the idea is that the 50% fail rate was because he knew she'd achieve it by the moon-core-explosion-bed route, so if he was speaking to Rose and she tried to do it on her quest bed she would fail (because that's not what she was supposed to do and she'd get split into a beta timeline and be doomed) Which... kind of makes sense?
