Will it boot normally just with the jailbreak disabled? If you're using a very few limited jailbreak apps that don't use mobilesubstrate I think or some key tool/component, the phone will boot fine but all the JB will be gone. However, if you have that (which most JB apps like SBSettings will require) you're SOL.

There is a semi-tethered jailbreak out now though. So it'll still boot, but none of the jailbroken apps will work until you can connect it to a computer and boot tethered.

So wait, I was holding off on jailbreaking until an untethered version came out because I equated respringing with rebooting. Jailbroken iphones tend to respring a lot on random when something inevitably crashes. But I just realized that I'm wrong about that? Respringing isn't the same as rebooting? So on the current iOS5 tethered jailbreak I can respring without being locked out of the phone? If so then a tethered jailbreak isn't that bad.

Correct. You can respring all you want.

Anyone holding off for an untethered 5.0 solution going to jump the gun using this semi-tethered tweak? I've been on the fence since the 5.0 jb came out, but i downloaded the ipsw and redsn0w yesterday in plans to jb. However i decided not to, but its an itch i really want to scratch. I'm on 4.2.6 now, with 4.2.8 is the oldest shsh i have saved which i believe to be an untethered fw. I know i will be completely underwhelmed by the changes but i really wanna! I backed up my music(not using itunes) and my contacts(outlook) but will the itunes backup restore all my installed cydia packages? To be honest i dont really want most of them(my current phone takes forever to boot and seems slow. Not to mention the battery life is pretty poo poo compared to unboxing day)

Forgive me if this has been answered, but I read through the FAQ and couldn't see it anywhere. Is there any way I can output a list of exactly which JB apps/tweaks I have installed? I'm upgrading from a 3GS to a 4S shortly and I want to make it as painless as possible. VVV: Thanks, don't know how I missed that psylent fucked around with this message at 05:54 on Oct 25, 2011 |

Henrik Zetterberg posted:This and the respring button. I don't think there's any other way to respring, which is important if you're on a tethered jailbreak. This is going to sound insane BUT, if you create a folder by dragging two apps on top of each other, there's a split second when you can drop Newsstand into that new folder. Launching Newsstand from a folder crashes the springboard, so I've been using that to respring.

Zorkon posted:That looks like a no. drat. Thanks. Not quite true. You can install the iPad baseband, which IS unlockable. HOWEVER, you will lose GPS entirely, won't be able to go back to an earlier iPhone baseband (yet, though there were some rumors that it seemed possible months ago), and some people report serious battery issues. Also, newer 3gs models (not sure what the cutoff is) have been redesigned so that doing this will destroy hardware components and the whole phone will stop functioning (gently caress you, Apple). I'm still hoping that the Dev Team releases a way to downgrade basebands from the iPad one (16.something) back to an earlier one that is regularly unlockable.

Jailbreakmatrix says that snowbreeze 2.0.2 will work on a 3.1.3 iPod Touch 1G, but I've tried twice on two different PCs and the iTunes restore attempt of the custom firmware fails with error 17, unknown error. A news article mentions both snowbreeze and error 17, so am I the rear end in a top hat here? I used iPod1,1_3.1.3_7E18_Restore.ipsw with snowbreeze.

You could try using iBooty. I read somewhere that using it would help you basically take the ipsw you created and it should put it on your iPod. If that doesn't work you could also take a look at Greenpois0n.

has anyone successfully upgraded their old bootrom 3GS to ios5 and retained all their data from their ios4 backup? is there any trick to it? when i did it i lost everything more recent than a 3 month old backup and i'm hesitant to try it again, esp since i keep hearing other people seeing the same thing.

I recently went to iOS 5 with jailbreak from 4.3.3 (custom Firmware to preserve baseband via RedSnow on a mac) my iPhone 4. Everything is great accept for the fact that iTunes is reporting that my iPhones has 4GB of "Other" Space occupied. Is there any way to clear this up? Edit: I don't have any jailbroken apps. Just did it to preserve baseband for potential Gevey Unlock. TheChipmunk fucked around with this message at 17:45 on Oct 26, 2011 |

I followed this guide: http://www.ipodrepublic.com/iphone/fixing-issue-other-files-iphone-memory/2010/03/31/ to remove the f subfolders in the iTunes control directory but it still shows that 'Other' is ~1.8GB And sometimes it jumps it back to 3.7GB :/

I have a carrier locked phone (optus in aussie) and I am in nz. I don't care about jailbreaking, I am happy with stock. Unfortunately I have the 4.11.8 baseband firmware. I was under the impression that all I needed to do to have an unlocked phone was to jailbreak the thing (which seems to hacktivate) then unlock it, then I could go back to stock firmware and forget about having tdo anything ever again. Is this the case? I have managed to jailbreak, but obviously not unlock it yet. Which tools do I need to keep my eye on - that SAM one?

Just get any random wall-to-USB charger and use your usual cord. They're like 2c + shipping on ebay or Amazon and will work with other devices besides the iPhone that use USB charging.

I'm wondering if the jailbreak is causing the space discrepancy and populating the 'Other' storage on the iPhone. Every time I try to resync my music the 'Other' gets huge. Its not properly doing something but I don't know exactly what... Looks like I may have to do a restore. I assume I just re-do the jailbreak process?

It's something hosed up with the way iTunes is storing music on the phone in iOS 5.

I'm wonder if I had a bad restore file or a sync error. Full restores multiple times, clean installs not restored from backup. Not encrypted, both with and without wifi sync, and on different iterations of iOS 5. It's definitely a problem with music, but I'm not sure what it is. The only thing I can think is that it's storing meta data and album art as "other" but I really don't know.

I can almost definitely say Album Art is getting stored as other, as the last time I synced it pushed over a lot of album art (due to most of the music being grabbed from iTunes Match) and it caused my 'Other' portion to noticeably grow.

All of the cheap ones tend to be cheap copies from China or somewhere. They tend to work okay but it's up to you if you want to go that way. I would go to a brick and mortar store and just grab the cheapest there.

It assumes when you restore a backup that all the apps will go back with the data. Also does it give you any storage info under Settings > General > Usage > Storage? edit: Though if you aren't restoring from a backup as indicated by your previous post, I don't know what to tell you.
