Yeah, I personally can't stand Homestuck anymore and I still enjoy this comic. All the Homestuck-inspired stuff kind of bugs me though. I skipped all the big walk-around flashes in Homestuck, so it's a bit offputting to see the exact same thing in another comic. I hope Prequel develops more into its own thing instead of being tied to the Homestuck fandom forever.

Oh no, a comic based on a game where you wander around cities poking into everybody's stuff and talking to them had a flash where the main character wanders around a city talking to everybody and poking into their stuff. Frankly I'm more concerned that the "Katia is bad at things and has horrible luck" thing is going to be driven into the ground and turn things into basically misery porn. Case in Point: The necromancer whose name I have already forgotten because he only existed to hand some magic items to Gro-Upp and die.

The problem I had with the homestuck walkaround flashes is I don't always want to spend 10 minutes walking around looking for the plot, and I never know if I missed something or reached the end or what. This Prequel one was good because it ends precisely where it needs to. Before anything super important happens. There's a ton of funny gags thrown about the town, but they're relatively easy to find, and they aren't integral to the plot.

I admit, that whole bit did feel a little like "we can't have anything go wrong for Katia directly right now, so let's have some off-screen indirect misery just to change things up." Maybe it's not supposed to feel like that, maybe it has some other meaning, but what's important is that as a reader that's what it felt like. That's not necessarily a bad thing of course. This thread is titled "Let's all make a Catgirl Cry" for a reason. I just agree that at times elements feel like they're sad for the sake of keeping up the sad quotient.

Also yeah, everything said about scope so far. Can't wait for Katia to screw up next!

I literally cannot even read Homestuck at this point because there's just so many characters and plot threads and weird time travel crap that I can't possibly make heads or tails of what's going on. This isn't to say that I wouldn't enjoy this comic if it got more complex, I just think there should be a baseline level of understanding for the reader so that even if you don't exactly get the big picture you still know what's going on right now.

I wasn't able to get past the first 60-odd comics the time my friend wanted me to read Homestuck. It was kind of entertaining, but took too long to get anywhere. For some reason though, I burned through hundreds of Problem Sleuth comics in an afternoon. The point is, this was really the first CYOA-style comic that's grabbed me and now I'm thinking of doing my next D&D campaign in the form of a CYOA with pictures and words, somehow. Judging from what we know of Quill-weave both here and in the actual game, I have a feeling that Katia just gave the wrong person her letter. On an unrelated note every time I see Katia Managan, I read it as Katia Morgana. I think my subconscious just likes that pun more.

I said it earlier in the thread but who really gives a gently caress how people might pervert your creation? It doesnt change the original one bit. That being said if I was in the place of one of the authors of a popular webcomic I dont know if I could resist pandering to that element, its going to line your wallet easy and you dont even have to get too graphic. Just let the fanbase fill in the blanks and then slap up a donation screen.
