maybe the portlandia jokes only work if youre familiar with portland for example there are actual agrarian communes outside portland. steve jobs was involved in one that grew apples, thats where the name for apple computer came from.

The new guy they got in to finish the series after Jordan died has loving saved those books. Books 1-5 are good, really peaking at 4/5, then a long slow descent culminating in like book 10 or so where there are like 900 pages to describe what happens in one loving day. Then Jordan dies, Sanderson takes over and everything goes balls to the wall. The last book is going to be nothing but loving epic battles.

The hyperion "cantos" (god that poo poo is pretentious) does not own. the first book is great, the sequels are boring cliche bullshit with dumb ideas that are super repetitive

go grab book 2, flip through the chapters and see how many end with the sentence "He took another life-preserving milk pac from the case, pulled the heat tab and fed it to the baby. There weren't very many left in the bag, time was running out."

i've started reading leguin for the first time ever, and it's p good. she has a very different authorial voice than i'm used to in sci fi. i dunno if that's because she's a woman or if it's the anthropological perspective, but it's pretty cool. reminds me of mary doria russell, which i'm guessing is because russell probably read a lot of leguin
