How much say does my unit have on when I have to do non-annual training events? In particular, this years dates were given for a 2 week training course everyone needs to attend at some point in the unit. I attend full time in person college, and the training takes place near finals. Do they have the right to make it mandatory for me or do I have the right to say no because I will flunk my classes?

Does it overlap finals? Because that would be incredibly stupid. I'm sure you can work it out with your unit.

Technically yes. But it's one of those situations that can easily bite you in the rear end for doing the "right" thing. Not reporting it to SSO is the better option as there is literally no way to get caught. Even if you get drug tested, you have a prescription so you're good. They're not going to check it with SSO.

The only way I could see this posing a problem is if you are still on the drug when it comes time for a reinvestigation...if you report it on your 86 like you are supposed to that will probably raise some eyebrows if your PSM/SSO is doing their job, although Valium is a pretty poor example for that since you generally shouldn't be on it long term.

Actually, now that I think some more about it, I don't think you would even be required to report Valium use provided you had a valid prescription...you might be required to report the reason you received the prescription, depending on what it was (you'd be required report treatment for alcoholism, but not report treatment for restless leg syndrome or whatever), but it's not like this is PRP where you are required to report every-loving-thing you take even if it's for a reason that has nothing to do with your ability to handle sensitive material.

What are some good online colleges? I want to both learn, AND get a degree, though getting a degree is more important. Accreditation is essential!

It really depends on your chain on command and you have to gauge their response. Mine allowed me to leave early(about a week) to deal with finals. However, another guy, a non-NCO who didn't rub elbows with the higher ups, initially wasn't allowed to because he was "needed", IE details.

Thankfully he didn't tell them the dates at first, I encouraged him to stretch the truth, IE finals were during drill vs 3-4 days after, and show their importance.

Tl;dr It's about who you're cool with, and how you present your case, like with anything.

What do you want to study? Some "normal" quality schools have decent online programs though you might not think of them as an online college.

You need a minimum of 95 for a Cat I language (French, Spanish), and a maximum of 110 for a Cat IV language (Chinese, Pashto).

PM me if you fall a little short on the DLAB; I might could get you a waiver, depending on what sort of language knowledge background you have.

Edit: Or just let me know what questions you may have about 35P in general. Chances are your recruiter doesn't know much about the MOS.

Military Intelligence jobs and jobs which involve telecommunications and a security clearance (the higher the better) transfer very well to the outside world. In fact it's quite common to separate or retire from the military in one of those jobs and walk right back into the same building as a civilian making 2-3 times as much with a lot less hassle.

A good friend of mine is currently at OCS for the marines and I want to send him an encouraging letter and maybe a care package. Are there rules about receiving packages at OCS? If it's allowed, what sort of things are good to send? From the sound of things OCS is drat hard, so I'd like to send him something that would help him out if I can.

I looked over the care package thread but I'm assuming it would reflect poorly on him to send gigabytes of porn. And it doesn't sound like he'll have any time for things like movies or TV. So I was thinking something like clif bars or other quick snacks (beef jerky?). Are they allowed to eat outside food? Is there anything else that would be useful that one normally wouldn't think of, like extra toothpaste or something?

Or I could just send him a letter.

I went almost 5 years ago, but the only thing I ever wanted was letters. Everything else... can just be taken badly depending on how the Sergeant Instructors feel. Maybe include a picture of friends back home or something as well or something from home. But letters at night definitely made my day.

Seconding this. They're great for garrison games, but for everything else, you're trading lack of support for tennis shoe comfort, also expect the soft sole to wear out quickly(mine look like a bald/corded tire after maybe 2 months of abuse); the sole is just as soft, if not softer than your standard nike free 5.0.
