yeah I picked one of those up in an airport a while back and was not impressed

The ending to the Engines of God series was just terrible.

On a related note, the whateverfuck sequels to the Uplift Trilogy by David Brin are also bad.

I have no idea how Jack McDevitt wins awards. I assumed it was some kind of Canadian patriotism thing, but it turns out he isn't Canadian.

Please, our valuable awards go to Robert J. Sawyer. Or as I like to think of him, the poor man's Canadian Doctorow:

Ulfwife wants to know what this is, she's read all the honor harrington books but that doesn't sound like it. She's a glutton for trashy sci-fi. Also she says hi.

It's not Berserkers, that's Saberhagen.

Probably and it's a great 2/3rds book (it's an omnibus of three books, where the first two are great and the third is poo poo)

honestly though, tell her to read this first because it's some pro cheesy sci-fi. Basically it's a war between earth/mars and the asteroids with zombies.

Please return the sentiment for me :)

The joke here is that it's several David Weber novels.

The first is the end novel of the Dahak series, which as sticky wizard said, the moon is a space ship.

The second would be part of the Empire of Man series.

The last would be in the Safehold series, which is actually pretty decent.

I haven't read the Empire of Man, and I doubt I ever will, because it was co-authored by John Ringo, so you know it's completely out there. I'll let this bit from the plot summary stand on it's own:

quote:

In fact, Roger's father, the Duke of New Madrid, and his ally, Lord Jackson Adula, have framed Roger, whom they believe dead, and taken the Empress captive, using a combination of cybernetic tampering, sexual slavery, and drugs to control the normally ironwilled Empress. The conspirators plan to put a son of New Madrid and the Empress, grown in an incubator, on the throne.

Literature is not exhaustible, for the sufficient and simple reason that no single book is. A book is not an isolated being: it is a relationship, an axis of innumerable relationships.
Ken MacLeod's version of the Singularity (from The Cassini Division et al) is a lot of fun because it focuses on the people who weren't the "upload myself into a computer" guys.
