I love Devo's "Are We Not Men," where should I go next? They've released a ton of material, and I'm curious as to which albums are worth picking up. Same with Blondie post-Parallel Lines. I have their first three albums, although I don't think Plastic Letters is as good as the other two, and I've heard really mixed things about their later stuff. What's good?

Just go chronologically. Listen to the Be Stiff EP, then Duty Now next, then Freedom of Choice, and then New Traditionalists. Most people stop there, but oh No Its Devo and Shout! aren't awful albums, just not as good as the previous three and a little too commercial and silly. If you're feeling really brave listen to the Hardcore Devo series, its their early work. It is very very out there and raw, but still listenable and fun.

Can anyone recommend me some more songs or bands in the style of Why Can The Bodies Fly by Pungent Stench? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCAQCTHadac

It's a cover the Austrian Death Metal group Pungent Stench made, based on an Electro song by Warning (German band from the 1980s) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85p88SZFtJY . I don't like classic Death Metal too much but I like that combination. And it's also no typical Electro-Industrial I am looking for, because I don't like that static braindead 1-1-1-1 dancefloor beat Industrial normally has.

I really like their punkier stuff, so I'll definitely check that out. And I'm not too worried about their later work being weak and commercial and silly. Talking Heads are my favorite band, so I'm used to it. :sigh:

[I forgot to do this a while ago, but I wanted to thank the people who recommended me some stuff similar to Limp Wrist, I dug a lot of it.]

So now I come to you guys with another request. I've been having a hard time finding a lot of electronic that I really like lately, so I'm sure some of you can help me out. I'm not really picky with what I like, so I'll just post a few links to give y'all an idea of what I'm looking for.

Dabrye - Evelyn
Prefuse 73 - Last Light
Osborne - Downtown

Or anything at all similar to Lone's stuff, too. Sorry if I'm being too vague, but I'm willing to check out anything that anyone wants to throw at me.

I don't listen to much electronic music, but Prefuse 73 reminds me of Kid Koala in his more mellow moments. Fog and, to a lesser extent, the Books, also come to mind.

I'm interested in Bassnectar but I don't really know where to start.

This is my first foray into electronic/DJ based music and from what I understand the discographies work a bit differently than say a traditional rock band. Bassnectar has a ton of LPs and a number of EPs but also lots of other stuff. Usually with a band I'd start with their earlier LPs and work my way from there. Does the same concept apply?

What are some bands/artists with rockin', really energetic, kind of dancey, kind of noisy tunes like:

Royal Trux
The Go! Team
Sleigh Bells
and Beck

I guess it's mostly alt rock with some hip hop influence, but Fatboy Slim has a similar feel and I know that's big beat but it draws a lot from rock and hip hop.

As someone already mentioned, Blue Cheer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nU5uDozoSSM

Sir Lord Baltimore is similar to early Sabbath, Zeppelin and Deep Purple but they're American and looser sounding, a bit like the Stooges. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0yFGGXMFp0w

Budgie is a lot like early Rush. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54H3EUAzpVg

Check out some Baltimore Consort albums. I just have their "Best of" album, but that might be all you need.

Also they're a little obscure (their albums are hard to come by in the US, and they barely even have anything on YouTube) but if you can, look into the Finnish group Tarujen Saari. They do traditional European folk music of all sorts and have fantastic energy. I highly recommend their album Levoton Hauta.

Also, '70s progressive rock/folk group Gryphon used Renaissance instruments like crumhorns and did a lot of excellent covers of Renaissance-era folk music. I highly recommend their first two albums (and their third, but then we're no longer talking about traditional music).

You might like some of the ska bands popular in the 90s: Reel Big Fish, Rancid, Mighty Mighty Bosstones (I'm sure an actual ska fan can give better recommendations). You could also try Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly, and the Pogues. You may also like Dookie by Green Day, and some Jane's Addiction. That sort of Offspring-style pop punk got pretty popular in the 90s, so you've got a few bands to choose from.

Note that I don't actually listen to any of these bands. The closest I get to that I can recommend is Gogol Bordello, so somebody who's into that genre would know better.

around and around we go
Does anyone have any good, off the beaten path, compilation suggestions? I'd love some 3 disc samplers of the type of music most of us would not otherwise come across.

For example, I have compilations named:
- Anthology of American Folk Music
- Children of Nuggets, Original Artyfacts from the Second Psychedelic Era, 1976-1996
- Long Road to Freedom, An Anthology of Black Music
- Nuggets, Original Artyfacts From the First Psychedelic Era, 1965-1968
- Tumbélé! Biguine, Afro and Latin Sounds From the French Caribbean, 1963-1974

Among others. Pitchfork has been a surprisingly good source for suggestions, but I've dried that well.

Therefore, does anyone have compilation suggestions? 2 discs of Peruvian music I didn't even know existed? A CD of the earliest electronic music? Et cetera? Looking at this from a historical point of view, not just an enjoyment. Would like to try some music I've never heard or heard of.

The Sound Of Siam (Leftfield Luk Thung, Jazz & Molam In Thailand 1964-1975) - weirdo Thai pop
Poetry & Languid Charm - Swahili Music 1920-1950 - Kenyan and Tanzanian popular music of some sort I guess, it's rather dry
The Iron Muse: A Panorama of Industrial Folk Song - English miners and wellwishers singing about their hellish lives
Rumba on the River - Congolese rumba, this one is an absolute goldmine
Churchical Chants of the Nyabingi - field recordings of Jamaican nyahbingi religious ceremonies
Soul of Angola: Anthologie de la musique angolaise 1965/1975 - Angolan pop from the late colonial ages
Goodbye, Babylon - the holy grail of gospel
Sitar Beat: Indian Style Heavy Funk Vol. 1 - Bollywood funk and copycats
Rembetika: Greek Music From the Underground - Greek tunes from before the war
Authenticité: The Syliphone Years - Guinea's Orchestres Nationaux and Federaux 1965-1980 - Guinea's state sponsored jazz bands
People Take Warning! Murder Ballads & Disaster Songs, 1913-1938 - as the title says
1970's Algerian Proto-Rai Underground - eerie mix of pop sensibilites and raw traditional music, totally rules
The Afrosound of Colombia Vol. 1 - afrobeat infused Colombian cumbia and salsa
Beretta 70: Roaring Themes From Thrilling Italian Policefilms 1971-80 - Morricone-funk
Choubi Choubi! Folk and Pop Sounds from Iraq - arabic pop from the '60s and '70s (I think)
Achilifunk: Gipsy Soul 1969-1979 - Spain had a wicked pop scene then, the stuff mixes rumba and flamenco with psych-pop pretty freely
Well Hung: 20 Funk-Rock Eruptions From Beneath Communist Hungary - Volume 1 - Hungary and Czechoslovakia had pretty vibrant countercultures, I think Poland had a funk scene of some sort too but I can't think of any comps off the top of my head
Shangaan Electro: New Wave Dance Music From South Africa - weird kitschy house/synthpop
Ecstatic Music of the Jemaa El Fna - some kind of tribal music from the Sahara, I can't remember what country
Bambara Mystic Soul: The Raw Sound of Burkina Faso 1974-1979 - Burkinabe afropop
