This is awesomer by far.

Ever wondered what driving over a curb at 30 miles per hour does to your stopping distance? What about sliding on ice into a curb at a 45-degree angle? Brakestomping on a street covered in only the worst manhole covers ever made? Ever wanted to drive up a runaway truck ramp?

The music just makes the video all the more awesome.
I don't know why the hell they were doing that, but it was awesome watching. Especially hearing the psssssssssssst as the air in the to right side tires go out on that Beetle as it smashed into the curb-like structure.

What I took away from that is that the new Beetle is the worst of the bunch. 2 flat tires, looks like the radiator pops when it hits the gravel mound, and it's too slow to get any awesome air off the ramp.

If you expect your cars to last perhaps 15-20 years in the hands of average drivers, you need to test them in worst-case scenarios.

Looks like a pretty fun job, too.

This is one of those things that every machinist thinks about making but never actually does. He did and mad a very nice well put together example. Well done him.

EDIT: Wait is it an actual working diesel motor?!

That is one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen.

Is it running on diesel, or just compressed air?

Put a glide in your stride and a dip in your hip and come on up to the mothership.
That's compressed air. There's no fuel injection, no glow plug system, no smoke or particulate in the exhaust, etc.

Something like that would be an awesome Christmas present. Too bad every one I've seen that works even on just compressed air is really expensive.

More like as little as 10 years ago or less. A lot of mold patterns are still made by hand. 5 axis milling is expensive as hell and is the only thing that can even come close to doing the kind of work that humans can. Arms and brains are really hard to replace.

They actually had the technology to machine the head out of a 5 axis mill but I bet the machine would cost a million+ in 1984 $. Renault was actually a if not THE pioneer of computer aided manufacturing as early as 1968. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pierre_B%C3%A9zier

I cant imagine the amount of programming time and setup cost that would go into machining a one off head like that in 1984. It really would be mind boggling.

Monday Morning Quarterback:
That is why you stay on the throttle. If, when he started to lose traction after swerving into the parking lot turn in, he had stayed on the gas he could've gotten the rear to come back around in to the street and dialed the rear back in straight. Instead he let off. the rear tires hooked and it shot him into the car next to him like a loving douchebag.
