Damonic posted:

I haven't really watched much wrestling in the past 5 years (aside from WWE for most of this year...yeah, I'm disappointed)

What other wrestling promotions should I check out? (RoH, TNA, etc) And who should I look out for?

Lots of good stuff out. Though if you want to watch good American wrestling you may have to open your wallet a lot more often.

TNA I've heard has been much better the last few months (compared to the years of them being so loving terrible.) but I wouldn't recommend it just because of all the times they gently caress something so simple up. As far as talent to look out for: AJ Styles, Christopher Daniels, Austin Aries, Alex Shelley (Hasn't been on TV since September), Chris Sabin (injured), Doug Williams (Hasn't been on TV since August), James Storm, Robert Roode & Kurt Angle. I think they try to be an alternative to WWE, but they rush through storylines/angles, have a lot of short TV matches, and outside of a few things are pretty much exactly like WWE. They expect you to forget angles that have happened, and are really bad at storytelling.

ROH (site currently having probs) is very good stuff, been a fan for around 5 years now. Have a new weekly tv show that you probably don't get, but they put all episodes on the website on Thursday Nights for free. They do internet PPV every few months and lots of house shows which is where the best stuff happens (you can buy them on DVD). Guys to look at are Davey Richards, Eddie Edwards, El Generico (My favorite), Kevin Steen, The Briscoes and The Young Bucks. ROH has a good track record of having great pro wrestling matches and it's where guys like CM Punk, Samoa Joe, Daniel Bryan, Evan Bourne, Austin Aries, Chris Hero (supposedly going to WWE developmental), Antonio Cesaro (in WWE Developmental) got popular before moving to WWE or TNA. They try and have everything make sense, and don't try to insult your intelligence. They have nice long matches, and are really a true alternative to the WWE product.

CHIKARA is a wrestling school in Philadelphia where most of the wrestlers are students. I think they're alright, though I'm not as huge a fan of them as others. I don't think the quality of wrestling is as good in other indies, but they know how to put on a fun show and have a lot of storylines. A fun, family friendly promotion. The shows they put on that I like the most are the shows where they bring in tons of people, such as King of Trios where they book like 16 trios teams from all around the world for 3 awesome shows. They just had first iPPV, which was a success. They had a Podcast-a-go-go on Youtube where you can watch clips of matches OR FULL MATCHES. (CLICK THIS NOW). Guys to look out for are Eddie Kingston, Chuck Taylor, Johnny Gargano, Hallowicked, Delirious & UltraMantis Black (though not for his wrestling ability, but everything else)!

PWG is also very great stuff. They aren't on TV, and only sell DVDs. If you want to watch shows that are really fun and just have amazing wrestling, this is the promotion for you. They bring in guys from everywhere (outside of WWE) such as ROH, TNA (though not as much), Japan, CHIKARA, wherever! They're not nearly as serious as ROH, and are much more vulgar than CHIKARA. The champion right now is El Generico. Everyone on the roster outside of like 3 people are amazing. Lots of long, amazing matches.

JAPAN is awesome. I'm serious. I love puro. I don't care if you don't know any Japanese, they have amazing matches and there is so much quality poo poo coming out today. ALL FOR FREE if you know where to look (Ditch). In fact, here is my favorite tag team match OF ALL TIME~! Talent to look out for? Way too much to mention.

agreed. dragon gate and new japan are ridiculous.

dragon gate is a lot more "spotty" outside of the main event scene (which is incredible at the moment) and new japan is more strong-style. there's tons of great poo poo for everyone

So this may be best for the actual Japan thread but gently caress it I'm here. Is there a good breakdown of the assorted Japanese wrestling companies and their big stars and all? I suppose I should ask the thread for specific matches, but this is a good place to go for general info.

The big stars by company? That's kind of hard for me as I don't really keep tabs on all of them, plus I really only know who I like the most and it's not like each promotion only has like 3 guys on top. I'd ask Ditch.

It is run by Marco Corleone (Mark Jindrak) and is basically dead. They taped a few episodes 2 years ago and then had them air on MTV2. The show went on hiatus for about a year and in the meantime they kept taping shows at some casino in the Southwest. They eventually convinced MTV2 to show more episodes, this time in the morning on weekends. Those episodes have aired and I doubt they will tape more.

I'll say it once, and i i'll say it again, bringing NJPW wrestlers to WCE, was to me, one of the smartest moves Eric Bischoff did. For all his faults, and all the bullshit he did, promoting wrestlers from different wrestling school philosophies, such as Mexico, Japan, Europe, etc was a drat smart move.

I always said, WCW's format was right, come for the high flyer mid cards stay for the story driven main events. Of course Eric and WCW management went down the dead end path we all knew, but that was a gradual decline that Eric put on himself, he knew what he was doing at first but gave in to the high stakes politics and gave into upper management not-understanding their product, and drove himself out in the process.

NJPW was always good at telling stories within the matches themselves. If only WWE would give a little bit into that philosophy just for a while. Big muscle bound brutes will always be the main event caliber wrestlers, but do what carney shows have known since they started and thats by brining the 'exotic' 'misunderstood' attractions which in America is the mexico, japan type wrestling.

Ok, i'll get out of my rat hole.

One of those Anniversary shows might be good, as there'd be some recognizable faces along with new dudes. Comedy option: Old School Raw

Your best bet would be to PVR the next epsiode of Raw and watch it with her on Tuesday. That way when a wrestler comes on the screen you can explain things to them. You can also then pause and rewind if she needs to understand something happening in the ring or needs a storyline explained.

That was actually the best raw in years imho. The comedy option would be making her watch TNA but I'm assuming you like your girlfriend so maybe you can introduce her to ROH wrasslin' first since it's good and only an hour long then you can see how she likes it compared to Raw.

It's a bit of a tricky situation, because if you show her an awesome Attitude Era Raw she'll probably be a bit let down by what we have now. So you might as well just pick a show you enjoyed from the last year and start there.

Unless you want to do what I did, and just watch the entire Attitude Era together. My girlfriend actually got into that stuff, as opposed to today's wrestling which she doesn't give a drat about anymore now that guys like HBK & Jericho are gone.

Edit: I wouldn't start her off with ROH, just because the production values are so low. Unless you can take her to a live event, really live is the best way to experience wrestling anyway.

I think if he wants to be in this relationship through Christmas he shouldn't try to push the current product on her. I'm assuming she's a new fan so it might be a better option to show her what WWF/E wrestling can be as opposed to what it is.

Then again, the current show consistently treats women with more respect than the older stuff. Kelly may not run the ropes and people may not give the first drat about Natalya but at least they're not covered in slime and barking like a dog.

The problem is that we lived through that, she hasn't. We lived through the good times *and* the bad and have forgotten or shut out most of the bad. He may build up an episode of Raw to her as the greatest and completely forget that one segment where Vince feels up a diva and The Rock makes a racist joke.

Best to just show her the current product and say, "I watch this. It isn't very good. I get enjoyment sometimes. Just understand I do this. I'll show you the better stuff later. Just get through this with me now. Please. Please..."

Anything from the year 2000. There was something for everyone. If she didn't like Edge and Christian, maybe she would like The Rock, or maybe she would like Too Cool, or maybe she would like the stuff with Crash Holly and the 24/7 rule, or maybe she would like Jericho's antics, or maybe she would like Kurt Angle or the HHH/Stephanie/Angle love triangle, or the Eddie Guerrero/Chyna storyline. You can't go wrong with 2000.

What about the Raw where Shawn Michaels cut a 20 minute promo in Montreal? Anybody would find that entertaining, right?

Fair enough. I guess this week's Raw and last week's aren't so bad. Maybe the Muppets one would draw her in too.

I've been wracking my brain since he asked, if there's any edition of Raw I can think of where the Divas didn't look like skanks. I'm sure they must exist but I can't pinpoint a period in which this wasn't the case. Maybe during the Mickie/Trish storyline or the Jericho/Trish/Christian/Lita quadrangle?
