Are you talking about a movie on TV or a movie in a theater?

If it's on TV, it may be a consequence of converting the movie from 24 frames per second to 60 fields per second, using a system called 3:2 pulldown.

I've seen it in both places, but mostly on a TV screen or LCD monitor. Thanks for that link.

RaoulDuke12 posted:

And if it's in a movie, it's just the result of panning the camera too fast. The shutter of a camera doesn't move as quickly as your eye, so if you pan two quickly it essentially does skip in short hops, taking a frame of the background and having a small amount of space not photographed before it takes the next one.

There's even a chart in my ASC manual that lists the approximate time needed at each shutter angle/lens size/subject distance to get a smooth pan, so it's obviously a subject that's been studied intensely, I think some DPs just don't give a poo poo/know any better.

That makes sense as well, thank you for your explanation.

Our asteroid belt appears to be estimated to be about 100 million km thick.

However, as Mister Kingdom said, you wouldn't really need to go around it; although the asteroid belt contains millions of asteroids, it also has a ridiculously large volume, and so the asteroids are sufficiently far apart that astronomers estimate that an unpiloted probe passing through the belt would have a one-in-a-billion chance of touching an asteroid unless it had been specifically aimed at one.

My question is much more mundane - does anybody have good suggestions for a reading light for bed? The ones I had a few years ago required constant adjustment in order to see the entire page clearly. I've been looking at this one but it's somewhat expensive. Are there any personal favorites out there?

How bright are you looking for and do you need the light to be portable? If neither is an issue, you can try Christmas lights. I've been doing it that way for years and I find it to be a nice, ambient light that isn't overbearing for night time. I tape it to the wall behind me with masking tape or string them on poles/whatever is around. Usually I don't even have to get up to shut them off because there's either an outlet by the bed or a short extension cord.

The white ones are definitely bright enough to read by. I use darker purple ones usually. Those are quite dim but still fine to read by, they would be better if someone's sleeping next to you. I just use them because my eyes are photosensitive often.

I don't have any recommendations for actual reading lights. Every single one I've ever bought either sucked or broke within a month. Even expensive ones I got after researching reviews and recommendations :(.

There is no 'kicking'. It's a long-term effort that requires a lot of exercise both physical and mental.

If you want a simple combination then take cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and a legit diet/exercise regimen (read W&W here). I called it simple, but that's bullshit. You will suffer through this, but it has been done many times by people weaker than you. You can do it too.

If you just eat and exercise properly, your confidence will skyrocket, but CBT can help you learn to control your own mental traps. We all have them, but many of us are dragged into low self-esteem/confidence/depression issues by negative thought alone. That's where CBT helps.

Think better, eat better, exercise better, dress better, feel loving fantastic.

You can submit a request for records to the national archives, but what they can tell you is pretty limited since you aren't next of kin. I suggest an e-mail to the National Museum of the Marine Corps. Let them know you found someone's tags and service awards in an old chest, and that you'd like to return them to his family. If you run it under cold water the temp change can gently caress with the non-stick coating. Moreso for Teflon pans, where it could cause the Teflon to start flaking, which can be bad for you. There's a lot of bad information about Teflon out there, and in any case it's not used much any more.

There's a nugget of truth to what he says, but it's also probably not as huge a deal as he makes it out to be. More like one of those "do this daily for three decades and you'll get cancer" sort of things. Of course by the time the non-stick coating on your pans is flaking away or damaged, you should get new pans.

I'm sure someone from GWS (you could try their general questions thread) will have better information than I do.

You're correct that the quick temperature change can cause the non-stick coating to flake. But eating teflon is harmless. It passes right through you. It's heating it up to ~500 degrees that causes it to release toxic gasses, which are especially harmful to birds but are pretty bad for you too, although the cancer link in humans has not been shown. And it's not hard to get a pan to 500 degrees, as shown in the article below. I personally wouldn't use teflon/non-stick at all for that reason.

Some decent general info here http://www.goodhousekeeping.com/product-reviews/cooking-tools/cookware-reviews/nonstick-cookware-safety-facts

BTW Teflon is still incredibly popular (like 90% of all aluminum cookware has it,) mostly because people don't know how to cook with good pans and burn everything and are lazy.

Note: this is not meant to advocate graphic design by appropriation.

1. Create a new image with your overall image as the bottom layer.
2. Create a new layer over the overall image. Select the Marquee tool (press M) and drag over the image to create a selection over the area you want to have the solid color background.
3. Open the Swatches pane and pick the color you want for the foreground color.
4. Select Edit > Fill or press Shift-F5. For Color, you want Foreground Color. Press OK.
5. Select Selections > Deselect or press Ctrl-D/Cmd-D.
6. Click on the Text tool and hold the mouse button down until the mini-menu pops up. Select Text Selection.
7. Create the text that you want to be "cut out" of the solid background.
8. With the "marching ants" still going around the text outline, select Edit > Clear.

Seasoned cast iron is non-stick, holds heat better, and lasts forever. The older they get the more non-stick they are.

There's a reason you never see nonstick pans in a professional kitchen (at least not at a good restaurant):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-elRYXXkm4
Stainless steel works just as well:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IyHJVfjwM-A
A little over-done for my taste, but you can see how easy it is to slide out even for an amateur:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHTBWK0u9A0
Even over a campfire:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zF5T3XpKLT0&feature=player_detailpage#t=337s
Doesn't even have to be a pan:
http://vimeo.com/6506743

Nonstick costs way more in the long run even if you ignore the uncertain, unproven, but worth thinking about health safety issues. And it becomes more sticky with use, the reverse of cast iron. If you absolutely must have some sort of "non-stick" surface, try anodized aluminum (not Teflon) like Calphalon. But cast iron and stainless steel are generally superior and last forever.

Yeah I thought about mentioning that in my post, but decided against it.

The race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, but to those who see it coming and jump aside.
Can I ask a stupid question about cast iron skillets? Are they supposed to smoke like a motherfucker when you cook on them? My one cast iron skillet I can't even use anymore because it sets off the smoke detector every time.

I probably just don't know what I'm doing though. I swear I know how to cook/bake/grill, but I'll be damned if I can figure out cast iron.
