Yeah, Gamzee didn't go crazy, he went troll. He got off the slime and became sober, which revealed him to be exactly the sort of troll Vriska was trying to emulate - bloodthirsty, violent, dominant and cruel. He himself talks about being perfectly sane, just currently very very angry about Dave / ICP which he takes out in typical troll fashion. Karkat calms him down with shooshpaps.

He got angry and killed some people, that's barely a social faux pas in troll society, let alone a sign of insanity.

Gamzee is a murdering crazy psychopath... which is exactly what he is expected to be as a highblood. I remember Vriska say by Troll standards that she was extremely lenient by not killing Tavros before she did. Sure, the new Trolls have weird human friend feelings that make them feel bad that some people they like are dead, but by Troll standards Gamzee is way above all the remaining Trolls and socially has the right to brutally murder them if he should so choose. I think it's more like being upset that your friend got hit by a car than that they were murdered. I think he is attractive to them because he is drat GOOD at killin' fools, a valued Troll skill.

Assuming it isn't explained further, my guess was that Karkat saw Gamzee's murders as his fault for not taking charge and moirailing him sooner, so he doesn't really blame him as much as he blames himself. The other trolls are just sort of uneasily glad the situation is resolved and with things as hosed as they are have settled for "Well he's probably not going to kill us and Karkat has him under control, at least this way the crazy killer clown's an asset."

Basically, they're probably not happy about it per se, but we don't have to go straight to "aliens love it when they get murdered". Humans in the same position might've drawn the same conclusions.

I hope we get a callback to this panel and the ones leading up to it. And then Hussie takes a week long break before the next update or switches to kidMom's introduction. We'd pretty much need to shut down the internet.

Yeah, but most of that was just sort of casual ribbing.

Plus, she didn't have a moirail to shoosh her into complacency. This isn't just about how trolls are naturally bloodthirsty, it's about their whole weird romantic system. Remember back in Hivebent when people were all "hey why is Andrew typing all these words for things that are essentially human concepts how is this moirail thing supposed to be different from platonic friendship?" This is how. In human terms, it would be unthinkable that a murderer could just hug it out with his best bro and everything would be okay again. For trolls this is not merely acceptable, it is a deep-seated part of their psychology that is every bit as fundamental a drive as our need for romance (and sex.)

Think of our inferior human romantic comedies, for example. People are generally expected to accept all kinds of preposterous resolutions because ~true love~. Same thing here. Right now Kanaya is probably rolling her eyes at Karkat because he's re-enacting the cheesy ending to like five thousand different troll pale romcoms.

She was presumably faking it, though--she was never really interested in Vriska that way, she had a full-blown romantic (human-ish romantic) crush and was just playing the moirail's part because she couldn't find a way to get closer.

It was also pretty heavily implied she got over it after she bawled her eyes out from seeing the fairy makeout incident. She had a heart to heart chat with Karkat where she pretty much announced she was done, and during the first big troll walkaround flash she was really not interested in anything Vriska had to say.

Essentially they broke up when Kanaya learned that Vriska was :h: for Tavros - because ultimately she wanted to be Vriska's matesprit rather than her moirail. You get a bit more on it if you talk to Kanaya as Vriska in [S] Past Karkat: Wake Up.

Later on, Kanaya straight up punches Vriska before leaving her to her own devices because she's preoccupied with Rose's screen going dark (ironically just as Vriska starts having flushed feelings for her).

It was important because it was hilarious! Also because, as Andrew established in his last batch of answers, he is extremely concerned with matters of ~karmic justice~ and it was vitally important that Kanaya delivered her comeuppance (the whole later thing with the stabs and the clock and the dying was just an unrelated coincidence.)

So, a thought occurred to me while thinking about all the fan speculation regarding Bro's sexual orientation: Do yaoi shippers ever yaoi-ship characters who are ACTUALLY gay, or would that be too boring? Like, if it turns out Bro likes dudes, are all the Tumblr people gonna start shipping him with Jake, or would they immediately switch over to imagining the FORBIDDEN LOVE between him and Kanaya or whatever? Someone more familiar with fandoms than me, help me out here.

Is that everything you have?

You're thinking about it too hard. People who like the thought of two dudes being romantically involved think about that, regardless of any sort of reality regarding preference. That is generally the long and short of it. Generally speaking, the actual reality of whatever is happening in the story has a tertiary importance at best with people who busy themselves with that.

My people I bring you a message from the Lord!
That's a really good point, and the main source of my apprehension earlier. But shippers gonna ship, regardless of sexuality, so maybe I was a big dumb for worrying about that.

It'd actually be kinda neat to have a gay male character, but dammit why did it have to be Bro? He's got all sorts of weird interests and perversions, and people are just going to misinterpret this as Hussie saying all gay people are messed up and being gay is messed up. Pretty sure that's not his angle here, but the inevitable conversation/debate/tumblr questions are gonna be annoying. Oh well.

He might not be of course, but evidence is mounting! I'd be happy to have a gay character (trolls aren't really the same thing here) but it's all the meta-stuff I'm dreading.

You say that like there's any characters in Homestuck that don't have weird interests and perversions. You've got the guy who confuses his love for a movie star with his love for a stuffed rabbit, the guy who raps about albino hairless dickmonkeys, a literal furry, a guy in love with the blue chicks from Avatar, a mustachiophile, and that's just picking examples from the human kids. With this cast, it'd be offensive if the only gay male character was boring and normal. Bro is awesome and the subtle hints so far at his sexuality have been hilarious. I love the direction Hussie seems to be taking with this.

I hear a lot of people talking about hints that Bro is gay but personally I never got that impression. Is this conversation what started it?

TT: Take it easy, bromide.
TT: Just about the only way I could salvage endearment from this perilous slope of horseshit would be to discover, really loving soon mind you, it was a preamble to some floundering invitation for me to rush to your vicinity as nakedly as possible.
TT: But since we've already shot that wad's eventuality on so many dry runs of flustered ambivalence that were as hilarious as they were one sided,
TT: That leaves only one hope for this message to avoid spiraling toward qualification as a critical loving defect in the hull of the Mach 10 rocket that is my precious spare time.
TT: And that hope lies in the extent to which you were practicing artful insincerity.

He mentions one-sided invitations... but I thought he was joking that JAKE was one-sidedly inviting him, not the other way around. I guess it could be read either way, though.

I guess there's also the bit about Brobot's novice wrestling feeling too intimate for Jake, but that could just be Jake being hypersensitive. OR NOT! I don't really care whether Bro is or isnt gay I just didn't get the same impression a lot of other readers seem to have.

I first got the impression after that combined with Lalonde's "soooo naiev *naive" comment about Bro and her being perfect for each other. Then the brobot's apparent novice/cuddle setting and the complicated situation when it comes to talking with him about girl stuff. It's a sense of a hint that bro's gay in each conversation with/about him. It could be nothing, but the senses of hints are being put there by Hussie deliberately. I don't mind if it's kept ambiguously vague with occasional joke hints dropped because I find them really funny. I'd also find it really funny if brobot tried to kiss Jake in the next update so I'm probably just really easy to please :[ The latter would be a big laugh out loud punchline that's funny once versus the former being subtly hilarious every update.

Because it never leaves its bedroom, no one has ever seen this poster's real face.
Somebody asked if Bro was on Hussie's old, old formspring, and Hussie deadpanned some response to the effect of "who cares?"

I hadn't considered it, because Bro was such a non-character, but I'm generally on the lookout for gay representation in good material, so I thought it over, and the only thing I could think of that would indicate this (at the time) was the functional version of Complete Bullshit (which wasn't developed by Hussie). The contents were mostly comics, videogames, and gay rights. Since that's basically what my browsing habits are, I assumed it was digging through my browser history or something, but it turns out it's not.

Given that, and Hussie's response in the latest tumblr post

quote:

I remember a long time ago this question used to appear in my formspring box all the time, well before there was much reasonable evidence to suggest he was, as there seems to be now. But there is no smoking puppet yet confirming this.
I'd say he's probably dropping hints on purpose, be it transcended fan bullshit (like the windsock hoodie) or just some lightweight baiting (like red-headed Dave).
It seems to be very much in Hussie's style, either way.
