Can someone recommend me something along the same lines of Q and Not U's first album No Kill No Beep Beep? I was hoping I would get something similar out of the later two albums but they took a weird turn that I wasn't into.

I know that's oddly specific so I'm not entirely sure if that will really work but god damnit I'm going to try.

A couple of pages ago someone asked about modern music using "medieval" instruments. I didn't see Diabolis In Musica suggested anywhere. So, whichever goon made that request, you can add that to your pile.

Can anyone give me recommendations in the opposite direction -- old music (pre-1920s) redone with modern instrumentation? I'm thinking of Wolf People's version of "On the Banks of Sweet Dundee", Crumbling Ghost's rendition of "The Man of Burnham Town", Richard Thompson's cover of "Sumer Is Icumen In," etc. Bonus points for anything with some energy behind it -- heavy rock, stoner rock, psychedelic, doom metal, folk metal, whatever else along those lines (though folk is also cool). Extra bonus points for anything with female vocals. Thanks!

Fairport Convention did some excellent electric folk, but I expect you're already familiar with them. Also look into Steeleye Span and other '70s British folk groups.

I really wish Tarujen Saari's music were easier to find on the web. If you can, track down their version of Pirunpolska, which features some awesome fuzz bass. First track I ever heard by them, and instantaneously made me a fan.

Varttina are another Finnish band I enjoy who do good modern arrangements of old music.

And Charming Hostess are just completely loving amazing in every way. Their album Punch is one of my favorite albums of the past decade. Highly energetic interpretations of traditional music and sophisticated original compositions that often remind me of a more melodic, overdriven Art Bears.

I totally feel you. Their later albums had that weird dance-punk thing going on and there was lots of falsetto... I found it pretty annoying, too.

The Dismemberment Plan - Basically criminal if you don't already know of them
Cinemechanica
Meet Me in St. Louis
Bear Vs. Shark
So Many Dynamos
Faraquet and/or Medications (members of Faraquet became Medications and moved towards a more straightforward pop sound, so they're probably more up your alley)
This Town Needs Guns (not really that similar, but the singers remind me of each other and TTNG are just too good to not mention)
Giraffes? Giraffes! are instrumental, but they have a very guitar-heavy style I find somewhat similar to No Kill No Beep Beep.

How about Neko Case? A bit more countryish, but along similar lines.

Also some adult contemporary singer-songwriters: K.D. Lang, Melissa Ethridge, Ani DiFranco, P.J. Harvey.

Lily Allen is similar as well. Some of her earlier stuff was more hip-hoppish I guess, but "It's Not Me, It's You" is pretty similar, and there's always Sara Bareilles that has a similar vibe to it. Might not be exactly what you're looking for, but they're both close enough that it felt worth mentioning.

Mika can get pretty gay. I'm not really familiar enough with his discography to say if he ever gets sexual about it. Maybe somebody else can fill you in?

I have a request, too. I've been listening to quite a bit of Alexander Scriabin's stuff on youtube in the last couple weeks, and I've really liked it. I have almost no experience with classical, though, outside of playing violin for a few years. Can someone point me in the direction of the best way to listen to his stuff? I'm not really sure what to listen to, because the performer can have a big effect on how the compositions sound. Is there an "album" of definitive performances or something? Help a total classical baby please.

Here's an example of a performance I liked:

Looking for a song with somewhat sinister lyrics. Rock, rap, and classical preferred, though I'll listen to most anything. The closest approximation for what I want is a song called "pumpkin tide" in the album möbius trip and hadron kaleido. I don't want downright emo, just sinister. I would link the song, but I'm posting this from my phone as my laptop is broken.

Anyway I had a pretty broad request about a month ago that didn't get any replies so here it is again:

What are some bands/artists with rockin', really energetic, kind of dancey, kind of noisy tunes like:

Royal Trux
The Go! Team
Sleigh Bells
and Beck

I guess it's mostly alt rock with some hip hop influence, but Fatboy Slim has a similar feel and I know that's big beat but it draws a lot from rock and hip hop.

I guess Beastie Boys fit too. Don't worry if you think I've heard of something already or it's really obvious.

Pure Reason Revolution have some gorgeous male/female vocal harmonies, and Amor Vincit Omnia is maybe my favorite pop/rock album of the past few years. If you're looking for a sound from just one album, try another band that only made that sound for a single record. No Knife's Riot For Romance is the closest I've come to getting that Q And Not U sound without just listening to other Dischord or DC bands.

I'm looking for some specific stuff:

I'm a teacher, and I play music in my class while the students are independently working. My students are mostly into rap and hip-hop. However, they're mostly into rap and hip-hop that glorifies smoking weed and saying "gently caress" every two words, so I can't play their music in class. Whatever that song is that goes "smoking that weed and singing them dirty rap songs" is gonzo with them right now.

I'd like to get pointed towards some rap that I could play in class, but isn't lame. I know in discussions in threads before I've seen people quote lyrics that were very philosophical and pretty clean. I'd like to show my students that there is music they might like that isn't just about getting high and pussy.

I get all my music from iTunes, so bonus if I can get it there.

"I Can" by Nas springs to mind.
Lupe Fiasco could work if you don't need the lyrics to be totally clean, goes double if you teach English as his lyrics tend to have layers of meaning. You could probably get a lesson out of tracks like "Gotta Eat", "Kick Push" (1 and 2) or "Building Minds Faster". SLR's just an awesome extended metaphor pile up.

So I need suggestions in three different categories.

First off, I want to find some more dark/slower paced jazz music similar to Miles Davis/Kind of Blue

Second, I'd like to find some more gritty rock/blues similar to The Black Keys and Dan Auerbach's solo album. I've already got the White Stripes but I would like to expand more on my collection here.

Third is a recommendation for my mother. She recently picked up Amy Winehouse - Back to Black and really enjoyed it, and she asked me if I could find her some other music like it.
