My kindle should arrive in a few days. I was looking forward to reading the remaining books from the Saga of Seven Suns that I'm a couple of books into, but there don't seem to be any ebook stores selling anything past book 3 in Australia. I should have checked before I bought it I suppose, but I'm pretty annoyed now that the first 6 books I'll be reading having gotten my ereader I have to borrow from my mother because the ereader can't show them.

I'm also worried I've wasted all this money on it now because I suspect a lot of things I'm going to want to read will be unavailable in Australia.

edit: gently caress, I just bought the first three ebooks from borders and I can't transfer them to a kindle because of DRM. Only way to read them is on my computer. Wrote to them for a refund but I'm not holding my breath. Goodbye $36 for loving nothing.

This purchase isn't having the calming effect I was hoping for :(

How did you buy them from Borders? Is Borders still a company in Oz?

Break the DRM and convert it to .MOBI with Calibre

The light itself is really directed/focused really well, so my girlfriend can sleep fine even if my Kindle is 100% illuminated.

Sweet. I'm asking for one for Christmas so I'm glad to hear some good things about it.

If I root a Nook ST can I download and install pretty much any Android App? I really just want a decent browser, Gmail, and Words with Friends on my ST that I'm getting for Christmas. This is possible, yes?

Yeah I ended up doing this but it annoys me that even though I paid for it I have to do something as dodgy with it as if I had just acquired it in other ways anyway.

Apparently you can sideload apps on the Nook Color now (without rooting as on the Tablet), though I haven't had a chance to try it myself.

Now that I've rooted my Nook Touch, I'm glad to see that it shouldn't be difficult at all to fix that crummy dictionary to at least contain more useful/better-formatted entries. (Why the dictionary can't actually cross-reference between two entries despite entries being designed to do so is beyond me)

The hard part will probably be getting a better dictionary and figuring out the best way to format it, rather than actually getting it working with the device...

Isn't it possible to buy a new dictionary from the store and set it as the default? I know that's possible with the Kindle (at least the keyboard version)

As far as I'm aware, the Nook doesn't support that (which is different from not being able to do it at all, since the format is pretty straight forward)

If you're rooted, switch from the stock book reading app to a reader like Moon+, where you can specify any dictionary you have (and online ones too, I think). You have a functional Android device now and B&N is the least of your available resources.

It's because your Kindle sucks so you're using the Nook all the time. :smugbert:

Really, though, I dunno. How long is each one lasting? No doubt B&N will warranty it, B&N and Amazon make the money off the media, not the hardware.

Well I do prefer my Nook touch :) But I am using my Kindle Touch because I wanted to put it through a trial run and I bought about 5 books on Amazon. I'll have to swing by B&N and get it replaced.

Without question, the non-touch. I'm a pretty tech savvy guy, and I have had a few issues with losing my place in my book because of inadvertent touches (can't be helped on the subway) coupled with the lack of page numbers.

Me crush ass to dust

I'd go for the Touch. First, it has double the battery life. She won't have to charge it for like 2 months. Second, touching makes more sense for older people. My dad is poo poo with computer and can barely figure out the concept of email. But after just a few weeks with an iPhone he loves it and is using multiple apps every day. The Touch kindle works more like a real book. She can swipe across pages like the real thing and the page will turn. There aren't any weird tiny buttons on the Touch model. It's just the home button, can't get simpler than that.

My Grandma is 90 and has said that she's too old to bother learning about computers since at least 1995. However, then she saw she could read any book she wanted in large print and took to the OG Kindle like a duck to water. There's a difference between "Oh look, another gift from my kids" and "holy poo poo, I can read again!"; if she's asking for one, she'll be motivated to learn what she needs to. If she has any difficulty writing or any hint of a tremor, DO NOT get the Touch. Consider the DX if she likes the hardback size format, needs large print books, or has trouble reading the newspaper.

Happydogska posted:

Nobody complaining about the Nook Tablet in the news is fine with me. I can't wait to get one, especially now that someone's gotten permanent root on it.

I really like the fact that as far as I can tell, B&N made exactly the same product with better specs. Hardly anyone does that, ever, and I really wish it was more common. I like added stuff if it's amazing but I feel like "always innovating" has choked "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" to death with endless waves of weak sweeping changes and unwanted addons, which is why we don't get Fallout 1 -> Fallout 2 anymore. All I want in life is the stuff I already like, but smarter, harder, faster, stronger.

I have a Fire. The lack of physical buttons and the placement of its one button are kind of a hassle, but not insurmountable. Privacy issues how? I think it's incredibly stupid that you can't opt not to show things, whether it's old returned library books or porn you don't want to show to Grandma. The new update is supposed to take care of that.

sethsez

I love the Fire. Mine does lag occasionally, mostly because I have a shitload of apps installed, but it's only occasionally and at least for me, acceptable for the price. Performance in terms of things like rendering webpages or playing games has been fantastic... it's really only the UI that has issues, and apparently Amazon is releasing an update for that soon.

I wouldn't get it for a kid right now though, entire because one-touch purchasing can't be turned off.

As for a Kindle for old people, I'd go with a non-Touch model. Touch screens are great for older people on something like an iPhone because feedback is instant, which it isn't with an e-ink display. It may not seem like a huge deal to someone accustomed to it, but when you're dealing with someone who's never sure if they're doing the right thing when handling electronics it can be a real hurdle. It can also be a miserable experience for someone with shaky hands.

Yeah, I really don't know where this suddenly came from. The vast majority of reviews on Amazon.com are positive and every review I read before I bought it had minor complaints, but the instant they announced the next update it suddenly became a hunk of crap destined for failure.

I've had my Fire for about two weeks now and I use it constantly every day. Is the lack of a hardware volume button annoying? Yes, absolutely. Is the power button located in a not so hot position? Again, absolutely. Does it sometimes take a tap or two to register when using the menu to switch between running apps (and basically only then)? Sure. But then you look at the price tag and realize that you've got a great screen for reading books and watching movies that also just so happens to have access to the entire Internet and can run Android apps. On an e-reader.

For $200 you can't go wrong.

All the latest readers are using eink pearl screens, some have a slightly different implementation. So you're left just deciding what features you want. Like is touch super important, do you prefer buttons, do you want a keyboard, ect.

2cents: We got Nooks because my wife saved up $160 towards the $180 Sony e-ink reader she wanted, only to find out that they had stopped selling it a couple months ago and the only ones left were on eBay for $500+. Sony went from selling 3 e-ink readers to a single new one with a smaller screen and a lot less features. We said "well gently caress Sony then" at that point on general principles.

The big selling point for the Nooks was that I could root them and install the Kindle app so we'd have access to both marketplaces for books (not to mention using the far-superior Android e-reader apps), but I understand that's not a good draw for the non-nerd.

e: A lot of people complain that the stock Nook Touch is missing the Right Font Size, that Small is too small and the next size up is too big, that and setting my own font was honestly the biggest allure of going to Moon+. I'm not sure if the complaining is "only the people who don't like it will say anything" or an actual epidemic. My wife was really irritated about it (haven't rooted hers yet, no time) for about 3 days and since then, not a peep; maybe it stops being an issue after a little use.
