Well, I just applied for the February exam. I don't expect to get in, but it'll be nice to get a feel for the process. Anything I should know going into the exam? Is it worth buying the book?

Educate yourself about the process and you can't go wrong. I officially declined my offer this morning. Best of luck to everyone!

Is it possible to take the test without yet choosing one of the five career paths?

Jedi Knight Luigi posted:So if you fail it and later retake it, are you unable to change your cone? No, if you fail and have to retake it you start over from step 01 again which gives you the chance to apply under a different cone. The only requirement there is that you can apply once a year. So if you take the February test in 2012 you are taking the first administration of the FSOT in 2012 and won't be eligible to take the FSOT again until the first administration in 2013 (which will most likely be in February again).

You apply separately each time. I believe you can only take it once a year.

Which also means you can have separate candidacies in separate cones.

No idea. Sounds right though I'm not sure getting placed on a register would terminate it.

I didn't make it past the personal narratives section last year. Presumably because I would be entirely too awesome. But also, possibly, maybe, in part, my biography has not been awesome enough. I have a "STEM" (I don't want to get more specific than that, just for dumb privacy reasons) undergrad degree, and am looking to go to grad school for STEM next year. Because it will make me more money in the substantially more likely scenario the Foreign Service never hires me. That said, my dream is to be a Foreign Service Officer. Will I be perceived as a stronger candidate when I apply from graduate school, if the subject is not particularly related to anything law-ish or foreign servicy? I.e., will going to grad school as I intend confer no extra advantage?

Man, I've been on the specialist registry for six months and as far as I know they haven't hired a single class since. There were rumors of one in January, but that's been pushed back to February. Congress

In other news, January offers are going out (second round maybe?) and seem to be hitting quite low, I saw a 5.575 in POL ranked in the low 40's got one. And a 5.5 in MGMT got one (no rank info). I'm guessing this is due to a lot of people expiring off the registers in the "gap" between July and December when the budget crisis was throwing things off (not that it isn't doing that now, but the damage has already been done).

How difficult is it to change OA dates? I'm scheduled for mine in DC at the end of January. At the moment, I'm in Brussels for a litigation project. The money's really good, and it's scheduled to run well into February. I'd like to stay through the end of it. There's no way they'd accept this as a reason to change dates, is there?
