I'm betting a lot of LOTR and Hobbit set-pieces will be their own little thing. Like the Ent Grove, the Balin's Tomb fight, Bag End's Parties, other great Moria moments. So while I doubt we'll see a full Helm's Deep in any one set, I bet you'll be able to put them all together. Minifig armies are gonna be a bitch to get though.

It never felt like a boys' toy, it was just an everyone toy. Lets be fair though, the women in this thread are not an unbiased sample when it comes to LEGO. There are a LOT of little girls who are almost religiously devoted to barbie and MLP and really DON'T like boy-toys (whether this is intrinsic or from socialization is another matter and well beyond the remits of this thread). That's who these sets are meant to appeal to. It is a bit of a shame as LEGO has always seemed like one of the most ungendered toys, but if it gets little girls into LEGO who would otherwise have snubbed it then it's not so bad. The main worry is girls who would have loved proper LEGO are given this by well meaning but misguided relatives Oddly enough, Belville is still being sold. I'm not sure what gap this is filling, unless it's "more girly than regular LEGO but not as hideously stereotyped as the horse stables and princesses of Belville". In which case I guess it's a step in the right direction?

I have a really hard time finding anything strenuously objectionable about the alternate minifigs. I mean, yeah, the pink overload is kind of a concern, but if this was just about rolling out a line of more humanlike figs with generic city-ish sets emphasizing playability and more intimate spaces I wouldn't really see the harm in it.

Still don't see why they couldn't just make minifigs with bumps on their chest pieces and have city sets like "pet shop" or "barbershop" that are gender non-specific but might have more young girl appeal than cops and firemen. Hell, a pet shop set full of animal elements? I'm sure there are people that would buy like 5 copies of that just to have the spares. edit: also dear Lego, after LOTR, please make Ninja Turtles sets and video games, thanks. Reading the Bloomberg article really makes it sound like Lego has figured out the "girl set" thing. Looking at that graveyard picture, everything is either bad lego sets or... not lego sets at all. The new stuff sounds like regular lego in different (admittedly stereotypical) colors with an emphasis on modularity (similar to the city modular build stuff, probably) and detailing.

Most of my friends were also the typical little girl, which is why I mentioned that they all had regular Lego sets too. I don't understand why Lego has to be a boys toy, especially with sets like the Creator lighthouse that aren't the typical trucks and cops and whatever that could be seen as more targeted towards boys.

Yeah, I think LOTR means R.I.P. Kingdoms Best castle lego since the classic mid 80s to early 90s days in my mind. Really sad, but I've still got the Joust set to look forward to. Light Gun Man posted:edit: also dear Lego, after LOTR, please make Ninja Turtles sets and video games, thanks. Lego, that was a joke, please don't, the licensing takeover is worrying me. Has everyone else been following Lego Cuusoo? Frankly I think it's making the internet Lego fans look a bit stupid. Lets have a look at the current top 10 highest rated. http://lego.cuusoo.com/discover 1. Lego Minecraft (First project to reach the 10,000 votes required for further review by lego!) 2. Cutlass Assault Mech Mk.1 (Admittedly pretty cool). 3. Minecraft (Again). 4. Minecraft Lego Blocks (Asking for multi colored bricks. Obviously cost prohibitive.) 5. Back to the Future (As if lego would want to license this without any recent movies to license) 6. Star Wars Dark Bucket (Literally 99 Stormtrooper minifigs and a Darth Vader. It would be funny if Lego made this but then charged $400 for the bucket). 7. Bring Back Bionicle (Ugh, just no). 8. Modular Western Town (Cool, but a total no brainer). 9. Macross VF-1 Valkyrie (Hurts its chances using the Macross license instead of just being a generic robot). 10. Leaning Tower of Pisa (Actually quite creative which is why it only has 468 votes). Oh yeah, and it is supposed to be an idea for a set you come up with, yet half of them are entire themes. Was it like this when it was first run in Japan? Thousands of votes for sets based on anime and videogames? I think it was good of Lego to give fans a chance to have some input on sets, but it's disappointing to see so many votes on such uncreative ideas and suggestions that don't have a chance in hell of being made for obvious reasons. That said there are lots of great ideas on there, they just aren't getting the votes. So back to Minecraft, I give it a 10% chance of getting a set produced. It would be less but Mojang really seem to be behind it and Lego haven't flat out rejected it yet so I don't know. Manchild King fucked around with this message at 18:37 on Dec 16, 2011 |

To do true minecraft you'd have to do cubic bricks. 2x2 bricks are far from perfect cubes (height is 60% of width I think), so you'd either require entirely new pieces, or you'd just have to use regular bricks and lose the minecraftiness.

Another thing about the girl sets isn't a much getting the girls to play with them, but getting parents to get them for them. compared to the space/fantasy ones, the city are the only gender neutral ones, and those always look so boring.

Looking at that graveyard picture, everything is either bad lego sets or... not lego sets at all. I share a lot of people's feelings about the "Lego is a boy's toy" and "need for girl specific sets" issue, but I had a fairly long conversation with people from Lego about this at Kidsfest this year. There is a really pervasive view in the market of Lego as being for boys, although people who know the product well know better. I agree it's pretty sad, but a lot of parents don't think or want to get a building toy for their girls, even when it's made really doll-like (e.g. Belville). Friends is probably the last push to succeed in this market, and I think it's their best effort yet and that article is a really interesting look at the issue. I have to say, LotR is probably going to steal the thunder long term for me, but I am still pretty excited about the friends sets, figs and all. The new parts, new colors and detailed City-like sets open up tons of new possibilities. It's always been tough to build things with pink or purple in them because you mostly only have weird Belville parts to work with. Also, the figs are actually pretty minifig-like. Via Eurobricks Not only do they come apart like minifigs, and are pretty close in height to them, but their hair is interchangeable with minifig hair.

With regards to that thing about Minecraft Lego sets, does anyone else feel like there's not much of a point? Most of Minecraft can be done with just...regular bricks. Just regular colored blocks, I don't really see what there is about it that would be special enough to license a set for. Like, if they released a Minecraft village or something like that, wouldn't it just be a collection of square bricks? I don't play Minecraft but I've seen quite a few videos of it and it seems like making a licensed set of a game made out of voxels would be a waste.

I think they started making their appearance with Alien Conquest. I can't find them on Peeron, though; they're not under any of the names I'd expect, and they take forever to get inventories for new sets into the DB. As for the Scorpion Crane, the tail's mounted to a click-ball hinge so it can rotate out of vertical. So it can bust you up with the wrecking ball and then inject you with venom. Or acid. Probably highly acidic venom.
