Leaving my job in LEESBURG VA. I have about a two week window to refer people. So act quickly. edit: since it's been asked via PM why I'm leaving such a sweet gig. I got offered a TON more money + telecommute. I actually declined the initial offer to leave which was $40k/yr more. Thats right, I refused to leave for an extra $40k/yr. What we need Sr Windows Systems Administrator It's a relatively small shop (1.5 sites, datacenter + corporate HQ). 1700 contractor company, but only about 50 on overhead. There is a helpdesk guy to filter out the BS tasks, and an IT manager to filter the politics. The position is GLORIOUS. Favorite job I've ever had. Ever. (Only leaving for shitloads of money, I actually declined the first offer to leave this job) Who we are A DoJ contractor with a 7 year contract. It's a joint venture largely owned by L-3Communications. The job is stable. Why it rocks to work here Pay ($90-100k). Benefits (amazing). Attitude (very chill). Casual(ish) dress. Flexible hours. I've received 2x $1000 random bonuses. It's incredible. Oh. And the VACATION. I get 4wks vacation + 1week sick time per year. 5 weeks total. AND they let you use the sick time for vacation. This is all fact. Typing all this up makes me almost want to un-resign. How to apply PM me. Or email setash at gmail dot com When we need you ASAP. My last day is December 20th. MJP posted:Who are we? Just reposting since we're still definitely looking for qualified people. At this point, I think we can make a case for someone who wants to move up from a less technical role (e.g. if you've done your time on a help desk or desktop support but haven't yet had the change to dcpromo, build a server and rack it, etc.), but we do need someone with the soft skills - we really can't have another Nick Burns type that sounds like he hates the users on the phone. You can hate on them all you like so long as nobody on the other end of the phone overhears you, though. There is no need to sound like a perky I-love-all-life customer service drone but you need to have real patience, the ability to ask good leading questions, the ability to work with difficult people (the users, not your co-workers), and listen to what they say. Hey, we actually filled the position I posted last year, but we are looking for a new guy: What we're looking for: We're looking for an Asterisk technician. Basic Linux knowledge is required, having a DCAP is a plus. We do small to mid-sized Asterisk installs and support after the fact. We also do a lot of network installs and managemet, we prefer Adtran products, so if you have experience with Adtrans, then you have a leg up. The person must be organized, able to do some basic project planning, and deal with clients directly. What we're not looking for: Disorganized people that aren't interested in learning and simply want a help-desk job with no desire to do anything. Location: Midtown NYC Approximate opening date: Immediately Benefits: Health and dental Notes: We're a small company, but have a strong Asterisk client base, and work closely with Digium and Adtran. It's an interesting job and you get to work a lot off different technologies, and it's very challenging. We're not interested in remote agents, though, you'd have to be in the New York city. Contact: email me at ericcorp AT gmail.com DOT com and I'll get you to our people.

Job Seeker I feel a little weird posting this here, since I feel much less qualified for any technical job compared to the average SH/SC poster, but I guess it couldn't hurt. My experience: 3 years of over-the-phone tech support for flower shop businesses across the US and Canada (managing routers and VPNs, cleaning viruses from WinXP and Win7 machines, troubleshooting hardware failures, that sort of thing). No certifications or formal technical education; these things were all learned on the job. Before this job, I was one of the salespeople at our local Apple Store for a year, and before that it was a series of non-tech jobs like waiting tables and being a barista at Starbucks. What I'm looking for: This is a tough one. I have a few ideas in mind but my main goal is to make more money than I am right now, which is only $12.35/hr full-time. I could handle doing another tech support job--which I would likely need some extra training for, as my current job seems pretty basic compared to most tech jobs--but I would also like to try my hand at something more creative such as graphic/web design (zero experience there, but willing to learn). What I'm NOT looking for: Call-center (talking on the phone is fine, but I don't want it to be the basis of the job), retail, part-time, contract/seasonal. Where I live: Oklahoma City, OK (north side) Where I'm looking: OKC or the surrounding area. I could also work from home remotely, if that's what somebody's looking for. When I can start: Late January/Early February, and with at least 2 weeks' notice for my current employer. Requirements: Full-time, full health/dental/vision benefits (I'm married, with a baby on the way later this month, if that helps) Can be reached via: PM or email chris.alan.gonzales@gmail.com

UK - Test Analyst/Software Test Engineer NB: This role requires you to be based in our UK office in Warwick, West Midlands. Here's the blurb, c/p'ed from the company website: Test analyst We're is looking for a test analyst to join our development team. Experience of Ruby and web application testing frameworks and some knowledge of the Ruby-on-Rails framework is desirable, but if you are an experienced tester that hasn't used Ruby and wants to learn, that's acceptable too. You will be working in a team environment to assist with the preparation of test plans and the testing of software of an enterprise level management appliance. We make extensive use of open source solutions including: Linux, Apache, Ruby-on-Rails, PostgreSQL and Subversion. Linux experience is highly desirable as our development environment and products are Linux based. Experience of automated testing frameworks such as Capybara or Selenium, and BDD frameworks such as RSpec and Cucumber is preferred but not required. The no-poo poo summary We have a large web-based appliance we provide to customers that, right now, is tested by hand through a manual test checklist. This is Bad, and us developers want to kill ourselves. We want someone with prior experience in automated testing to come in and, from the ground up, build and maintain an automated test suite for our system. If you've done automated testing of web applications before, you can contact me at kalleth AT gmail DOT com and i'll forward your CV to the guy in charge of recruiting for this position.

Who are we? Rosetta! We are a midsized (1300 people) digital marketing agency. We offer a number of services to our clients. Everything from strategy consulting to website design, development, and hosting. We work with companies you've probably heard of! Apple, Microsoft, RIM, Nationwide, OfficeMax, T-Mobile, and a lot more. Where are we? Princeton NJ (HQ), New York NY, Toronto Ontario, Cleveland OH, Chicago IL, San Jose CA, Los Angeles CA, Irvine CA, San Luis Obispo CA. If you're really special you might be able to work remote! Most of our technology team is in Cleveland or on the West Coast. What are we looking for? A lot of things. Developers (Java, C#, iOS, Android, web stuff/User Interface Design stuff like html, css, jquery, javascript, voodoo, Sharepoint), SEO gurus, website analytics, project managers, account managers, consultants, copywriters, graphic design, systems admins! Check out the website for a full list. For the west coast, check out our west coast team. We're hiring at various levels, from partner to intern. I'll highlight one position, because its what I do (except I mostly do Windows, and this is all *nix). This is in Cleveland, however you might be able to work remotely. Several team members do. Linux/Unix Admin quote:The System Engineer is an individual with extensive product knowledge who primarily installs, configures, and maintains e-commerce sites using IBM WebSphere Commerce V7.0. This administration professional has a general awareness of how the product components interact and the capabilities of the components, as well as the efficient operations of a WebSphere Commerce runtime environment, its configurations and the tiered architecture of production, staging, QA, and DEVINT systems. In a not written by HR format: Know IBM Websphere Commerce (WAS). Know Linux/Unix. You'll deal with everything from CentOS to AIX. Have experience supporting production web environments. Basic networking skills. Scripting (ruby, python, perl, bash, pick one or more!) Ability to be in a data center without accidentally pressing the shiny "dump halon" button. A bonus would be knowledge of subversion, mercurial, git, or other source control systems. Be able to deal with clients, account managers, developers, and so on without being a complete raging neckbeard. Be willing to travel (25%, probably less! Maybe never. I travel for a week once a quarter.) On-call 24/7 for a week, then off for 10+ weeks. Everyone from Director level and down participates. This is a purely client-facing position. You will be designing, building, and supporting (primarily) eCommerce sites. You won't have to deal with desktops, help desk, printers, and so on. You will have to deal with multiple clients, projects and environments. Our 'System Engineering' group is 3 Windows Admins, 3 DBAs, and 10 *nix admins. Mostly you'll be working with a team of 20-50 people that include developers, QA, sys admins, business analysts, and so on that serve a handful of clients. The west coast team is a bit separate (we acquired their company this year and are still integrating), but they add on another 7 or 8 windows/*nix/dba dudes. How do I apply? Go to the websites! Here! or Here for west coast! Also on the twitter! @RosettaCareers and @LevelStudios. These are very active, send them a message! If you have any questions, email me at f1tof8 at gmail dot com. Anything else I should know? It's consulting and production web hosting. That doesn't always mesh with 40 hours a week. However, we're pretty flexible with working from home, sleeping in if something exploded at 3am, and so on. The culture is very fun, innovative and hard working. In Cleveland, we have monthly beer tastings in the office. Our 'technology team' meetings are at bars, alcohol is provided. There's almost always free pizza, sandwiches, cookies, or something somewhere in the office. People are always going to happy hours after work, Indian's games in the summer, and so on. Offices are mega-awesome. Mostly younger people, though we have a few grey-beards to keep us in line. Wear pretty much what you want to wear. My team lead (manages/herds 40+ people) wears a t-shirt and jeans every day. It's an agency, so titles/levels are more representative of pay and experience than actual job role. Someone who is a 'Manager' or 'Director' may still be 100% technical in their day to day work. I would expect this to be a Senior Associate or Manager level position, depending on experience/salary requirements. mim fucked around with this message at 08:03 on Dec 18, 2011 |

Job Title: Software Development Engineer in Test Location: Seattle, WA Company: HTC, Innovation Qualifications: Unix/Linux experience, knowledge of Java build system, not being a Dickhole I work in HTCs Connected Services division. Basically, we make web services for HTC phones in order to provide features that other phone manufacturers, like Samsung, may not be able to offer. Also, I heard from a guy that Samsung phones give you cancer. I don't know if it's true, that's just what I heard. Anyway, we're looking for people with good unix skills to join our team. This means someone who can handle deploying and running software on RHEL or Ubuntu systems. We develop automated testing and build infrastructure for our other teams, so knowledge of Java build systems (ant, gradle, ivy, etc) and some degree of java programming ability is a real plus. We do have some former microsoft stack people on our team and that's fine - you just need to be willing to learn and self-motivated enough to train yourself to a certain extent. We're willing to help guide and train people, we're just really understaffed now and don't have time to hold anyone's hand.

I think this is kosher to post, if not I'll remove it I've recently started an email newsletter which interviews/profiles startup tech companies that have open job positions. By startup, I mean anything from just-funded all the way to 100-200 employees. The idea is to provide a more personal look at companies, since job listings are often pretty sterile and don't give much insight into the company culture. The questions range from "what's the hardest problem you solved recently?" to "how has the company changed since you joined?" I send out weekly emails on Wednesdays, although I may be moving to two interviews/week because the flow of companies is increasing. If anyone is interested, it can be found here.

Who are we? We're amazon.com, you've probably heard of us , and we're looking for a software developer. More specifically, my team works with the Disc on Demand (DoD) portion of Amazon (also known as Createspace). Say you're a filmmaker or musician and want to distribute your album or movie to the world. You could go to a replicator and have them do a run leaving you with a bunch of inventory and the responsibility of distribution. Or you can go through us. Send us a copy of your DVD or CD and we'll store it in our database and list it on Amazon. When someone orders a copy, we'll burn it, print your artwork and then ship it directly to the customer (and give you a cut of the sale, of course). Our team is responsible for developing the software that ingests discs sent to us as well as securely storing them for manufacture. We've published content from high-profile companies such as VH1, MTV, New Line, Lionsgate, Joss Whedon, Sony BMG, and EMI all the way down to independent musicians and filmmakers distributing their first film or album. Where are we? We work at Amazon's headquarters in sunny Seattle, WA. Benefits? Health, dental, vision, 401k matching, relocation assistance What do you need from me? - Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related field, or 4+ year relevant work experience - 2+ years professional experience in software development - Computer Science fundamentals in object-oriented design - Computer Science fundamentals in data structures - Computer Science fundamentals in algorithm design, problem solving, and complexity analysis - Proficiency in at least one modern programming language such as C, C++, Java, or Perl It's a bonus if you have experience with distributed file systems, audio/video encoding, DVD authoring, and security. We do most of our programming in Java and Python. The official job posting is located here Anything else? We're a small team (our manger, 3 devs (including me!), a network engineer, and a support engineer) with lots of responsibility. Most of us on the team have been doing this for 3+ years. We share a love of technology, media, and good food (lots of good food around us and we love going out to lunch as a team). We do have an on-call rotation, but it's not too bad (weekly rotations and it's a pretty rare occurrence to be paged). Amazon is an awesome company to work for; I'm usually sporting a T-shirt and jeans. The DoD team (operations and us) are a pretty chill bunch and we do a lot of hanging out outside of work (we recently went to Whirlyball together and had a blast). Amazon itself has lots of things going on and we frequently interact with teams in all areas (AWS, Amazon MP3 and Instant Video to name a few). I've personally been in this position for about 4 years (starting as an intern and working my way up) and love what I do. All right, you sold me. What now? Go ahead and send me a PM or you can email me at bschwartz AT amazon DOT com. CoasterMaster fucked around with this message at 17:34 on Apr 13, 2012 |

Most of the ads I see are for senior and manager positions, it makes me wonder if advancement opportunities are rare in IT. Edit: I realize that my lack of a job is effectively my fault, I am sure I could have gotten a lowly desktop/tech/customer support job by now; I would rather put my 10+ years of knowledge to good use. I can't remember what was predicted for 2011, but I did notice something back in late 2009/early 2010 when I was looking for my current job. Postings for entry level helpdesk/desktop support positions weren't too hard to find, and neither were postings for senior level/management positions, but postings for mid-level positions were few and far between.

That's more the problem than anything else. Guys with too much experience to be considered 'Entry Level' but not enough to be 'Management' or 'Senior Level' are kinda left in the lurch.
