Mahalo, fuckers.
So here's a question... what is the oldest set you own? You don't have to have gotten it at the time when it originally came out, eBay and so on is ok.

Here is mine:

This nice garage/gas station set is from 1957. As you can see it features a real truck, not one made of bricks--this was common at the time.

This is what it looks like inside--the bricks are neatly laid out in cardboard holes (well except for that red one :)) Even the gas station part is pre-made. Building instructions are on the back of the box and have just four steps. Back then it wasn't "add one brick per step" like it is in today's building instructions.

Unfortunately, I don't think it would really be possible to build the set at this point since the bricks are a bit warped. This is a normal thing that happens to the material used to make them in the 1950s. Today they use different kind of plastic so this is not a problem.

And finally here is one more 'oldtimer'. The set below is from 1965, and as you can see it's a bit more in line with what we are used to today, except for the fact that it still features a pre-made car (in this case a Mercedes-Benz):

Also note the weird tree in that last one!

The 384 London Bus is my oldest set, from 1973 (or maybe it was 760 from 1975? There doesn't seem to be any difference, maybe one was Europe and the other US, kinda like what they did with the Galaxy Explorer). It was my mom's, but I appropriated it back in the 80s. None of the stickers survive, but I seem to recall the instructions being largely intact. I repaired a bunch of my old instructions with tape a while back, and stored them more carefully.

The oldest set I have that was originally mine was the 889 Radar Truck from 1979.

Both sets are fairly normal by today's standards, although the London Bus had windows, wheels, tires, and a 2x4 wheel holder brick not seen since the 70s. The strangest bit is a headlight brick with a square hole. Peeron lists it as a window. Hasn't been in use since '81.

Does that drive up the value at all? Vintage set + rare bricks?

EDIT: I didn't expect much but I got the Tree Vignette and some Series 5 minifigs today. Are the little website exclusive sets hard to find afterwards? I want to get the Fireplace too.

Rarer sets from the 1950s can definitely be expensive, especially if they are complete and with a box. Sets such as the 1957 one in my example can typically cost on the order of $500 or so when you buy them on eBay or elsewhere. Sets from late 1970s onwards are a lot more common and not usually so hard to get unless a particular set is for some reason rare.

Also here is an example of what the bricks from 1950s look like today after having warped over time: http://www.bricklink.com/myImg/32826.jpg. The set in this pircture is from 1958.

EDIT: Good example of a newer set that is quire rare is this one: http://brickset.com/detail/?set=6393-1 from 1987. In this case the reason is that it was only released in US and no other country. So this one can also fetch prices in hundreds of $.

I got three sets this year. Superman vs Power Armor Lex Luthor, Star Wars Snowtrooper Battle Pack, and Harry Potter Forbidden Forest. The Harry Potter set was from my mom, and to both me and my mom. Under the wrapping was a sticky note, asking me to build it for her. Which is cool, because I'd have no interest in Harry Potter.

But Superman vs Power Armor Lex has to be one of my all-time favorite Lego sets. First off, I'm a big comic book geek, especially for DC Comics. So now I have Superman, Wonder Woman and Lex Luthor minifigs, along with a loving piece of kryptonite. Then you through in the fact that it's a Lego mecha robot, which is something we always want more of. Sure, it's not the classic design from the comics, but it makes for a really cool Lego set. This is the exact kind of set I would have loved to get as a kid. Plus, it's only $20-30.

I also got the Brick Bible. :)

I'm a fucking genuis
Thank you for this thread, I had a great time reading it and remembering all my great City Lego from the 80s (cafe, bike shop, stables, fire station etc - my mum still has it but won't part with it!). I've been quite disillusioned with Lego lately and went for Playmobil instead - I have two daughters (6 and 1.5) and there just doesn't seem to be any of those cool kits around to get the eldest interested in...all I could find was the Belville stuff, yuck. And I'm really disappointed with the new "girly" line, what a mess. Although the architecture line looks fantastic; a friend got the Guggenheim today and I'm so jealous of her!

Anyway, we built set 5898 (a little petrol station with two cars) today and had a fantastic time; we've not had much out lately because of the toddler. It had absolutely *loads* of spare pieces - is that standard practice now? There were specialist pieces I've never seen before and we couldn't work out how they were supposed to go with the set. And yet they were listed on the box.

Toddler is getting the Duplo Fire Truck from Grandma in a few days. She is going to LOVE it. :D

Here in Australia, I'm torn - Myer and David Jones both have 30% off all Lego stock.

One store has the 8110 Technic Unimog on sale for the next two weeks for AU$230 (RRP AU$329), and another has the 8043 Motorized Excavator on sale for today for $244 (RRP AU$349)

Or I can order out of Amazon US via a US Re-shipper and land them here for US$239 / US$229 respectively, including freight.

Do I just walk in and buy them today, or wait and hope they go on sale in the US. Decisions Decisions.

^ I would wait. I hate being negative in the lego thread, but 30% off still wouldn't even drop the price to the US RRP.

For instance, on Bricklink there is a German seller who has that motorised excavator new and swealed for $137.55 AUD. I know postage is expensive, but still, Australian Lego prices are disgusting.

Or you can chose to support Australian businesses! :australia:

The Angel from my Nightmare

MY GIRLFRIEND got me the Millenium Falcon set :3: I spent all morning building it and it really is a fantastic kit, despite the lack of minifigs. Why is Vader there? It should come with C3PO and R2D2 if anything. Also the stickers are fine, there weren't that many and I'm not going to build anything else with the parts probably so they look good to me.

Also got the Burj Khalifa and while it's kind of nice to look at, it was repetitive as gently caress to build.

Lastly, I was kind of let down by the advent calendar this year except for the last couple of days. The garbage can with a wrench in it is just terrible, and who cares about that ridiculous podium with legs from the prequel. Too much prequel junk in general. Santa Yoda is great, however.

My wife got me the Slave I today since I am a huge lego nerd. Really cool kit. I was not expecting it and am very excited to be able to join my kids in a space battle.

My kids got a total of 14 lego sets from various relatives and my wife and I. Mostly smaller kits but a few really big ones. Between 7am and 5pm I spent about 6 or 7 hours building legos. My fingers hurt and I thought I was going to start drawing blood near the end, but it was so much drat fun. A very good christmas day indeed.

My Christmas lego haul was pretty sparse, but nifty. I got that little mini Venator Attack Cruiser and the rubbery minifig ice cream tray. My wife found out they can also be used as a chocolate mould so she made me some minifig chocolates to put in my stocking.

My wife, on the other hand, opened up her Technic mobile crane and Earth Defence Force HQ. That combined with the 1/2 price Millennium Falcon set I scored at TRU last week due to a small number of missing pieces (whoever opened it tried to make off with the minifigs but only got the heads and accessories along with all the technic pins and poo poo for the first 20 steps) which are already en route and easily substituted for now will keep our household busy for the next week or two.

I still got my Christmas building fix, both my nephews got a boatload of Lego as gifts and needed help assembling it all.

I got the Alien tripod and the Atlantis Temple this year. The tripod is a lot of fun to play with. The temple is neat, and I love the monsters included, but it is pretty delicate since it's a bunch of columns.

My sister (who is 29 and doesn't more than a couple of sets) told me before Christmas that she wanted a big set and had been looking at the Weasley's house set, but the local stores had all sold out and LEGO had stopped listing it on their site. So a big thank you to all of you for introducing me to Bricklink! It was great to see her open it up and build it like a kid again.

A candy store in a nearby mall opens up the minifig boxes, feels them up and labels them. My sister went there to find me the last remaining minifig that I wanted from Series 5 (the gangster) to find it, and when it wasn't in their display box, got them to open up a new box and find one for me. :allears:

I've been looking at bricklink today, to try and get a few 1x8 bricks. Took a look at the cost of some of the sets and...wow are they taking the piss?!?

Nearly £400 for the cheapest modular Market Street AKA the small modular set. Some of the prices get silly with people asking nearly two grand for a Cafe Corner.

Do people pay these prices? I wouldn't mind a Market street to add to my modular collection, but those prices are silly.

Some do, look at the buy history for the item. Green Grocer and Cafe Corner have gone to retarded levels of cost for what was a $200CDN set. There is very few rare bricks in them that you can piece them together for at least half the asking cost.
