Why is the sun always bullying me?

Speaking as someone from the states, I just can't wait until this skrillex poo poo loving dies and all the decent DJs in my town stop trying to pander to the crowd he attracts.

I've heard some down right awful tunes being dropped by people who will admit that they know better. Hell, the biggest promoter/DJ in my city was recently lamenting on FB that he's totally sick of dubstep in general and wishes he could go back to playing Tech House. This is the attitude that I find most depressing, playing out tunes that you don't even loving enjoy just so you can get a crowd of morons moving for an hour. Why not just leave those sets to the 100000 random DJs that popped up overnight once the mid range stuff got big? If you are not enjoying it anymore then whats the loving point.

Hey guys I'm going to be that guy that drops in just to get some recommendations.
I don't know much about this type of music.
I'm not a big fan of The Streets because of his delivery, but there is a song on the mixtape album "Cyberspace and Reds" that I really like.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YW0p6FfHYb4

I guess these dudes on here are making grime music? I'm not really sure. But i like basically everything about this song.

Please recommend me some stuff like this. I'm not really looking for intellectual stuff that you have to listen to with headphones. At the same time, I feel like this song isn't just plain hip hop, so whatever it is, please steer me in the right direction.

Thanks

Yep it's Grime. You could do worse than checking out Wiley's albums. He's had a billion mixtapes out, but check his actual albums. On XL you had Treddin' On Thin Ice, while on Big Dada you have Playtime Is Over and just out a few months ago 100% Publishing. TOTI is - alongside Dizzee's Boy In Da Corner - one of the classic original grime releases.

Yes. I'm gonna go put on Welcome To Wonderland now. Perfection. The vocal is a banger too. Call My Name is definitely my fav off that album. Or maybe it's Shout. gently caress it it's all good. Seriously folks go buy it should be ultra cheap nowadays.

And judging by the fact they still seem to be on discount in places I seem to have been one of the few to have bought Mixing Records grime Instrumental CD Packs. The first two anyway. 6 CDs of sometimes good, sometimes okay, sometimes bad instrumentals.

Awful lot of mid-range dubstep hate in this thread. Especially loved 28bgg's vitriolic anti-skrillex post. I don't really understand what you means about bringing "the wrong crowd" who "don't bring anything positive to the table"

The fact is with pretty much any genre of music you've got to poo poo-filter out at least 80% of what gets released to find the nuggets of gold that you like.
I'm not really a huge dubstep fan, but the stuff I do like (chasing shadows, 16-bit, datsik, etc) is apparently the 'wrong' kind of dubstep. But hey, I prefer it to the down-tempo, no-drop 'true' dubstep that this thread seems to champion. Different strokes for different folks, y'know?

Also, for a uk bass thread, why the lack of breaks? I know the scene's not like it used to be, but come on, you've got 2 'history of music' posts about garage. What gives?

When this thread did discuss mid-range dubstep in the past, when people came out and said "lol this is loving terrible" people started to go on about people being pretentious about bass music and it caused a lot of needless drama when people were simply posting their opinion. This all petered out when all the mid-range stuff started to be discussed less. This thread has been much more enjoyable since.

What links does breaks have to the scene discussed in this thread? Seems about as relevant as bringing up hard house or something.

Trying to suggest that it's a split of midrange and 'downtempo' is just loving stupid, as if you can't have dancefloor tracks which are not solely obnoxious midrange. There's loads of 12" releases on actual record labels each week intended for dancefloor play; even if you don't like subbass focused tracks there's tons of choice, you don't have to listen to Burial or whatever. Like if you like kinda breaksy stuff:

Coleco - Martyr http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHU4DpywrA0
D1 - Flood of Emotions http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6SYIjULvSk
Royal-T - Orangeade VIP http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7Jr9co0t0Q
Aquasky - Taken Over Me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXwuvjTYLiU
Kuedo - Oh http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8J7IIwZSXs
Killawatt - Sidewinder (Ipman Remix) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1_J9XJXO2c
Om Unit - Vibrations http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnD7K7EEiU0
Jon Convex - Bump and Grind http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1WUgyHw5qU
Hudson Mohawke - Thunder Bay http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvKAr9qaI1I

There's tons of poo poo coming out, if you like music at all i don't know why you'd want to stick to one lovely played out formula. Even if you was only interested in hard dance music and was only interested cause it was 'filthy' there's still more appropriate music anyway: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kr0GDX_C0oo or hardstyle where they love putting cheesy melodies/vocals too, or hard dnb for non 4/4 stuff..

Definitely banging. And definitely still bass music. The beauty of keeping things nice 'n vague and loose. Definitely more of a Techno edge, which makes sense obviously since it's on Clone.

Actually you might like the recent Alex Coulton release on new Glaswegian label All Caps, it might be up your alley. All Caps first release and it's been getting some pretty good attention despite that. AC is run by wee Ryan (and some friends I think) who now works in Rubadub I believe and who used to hang about with us at nights when he was a wee yout. Hey guys. Lately, I've been time travelling on youtube listening to UKG and was wondering if anyone could give me a top 5 or just a list of good tunes by Jeremy Sylvester. He's got 52523056260206 aliases on equally numerous labels, so it's been kind of hard to search for his stuff.

Thanks.

Sorry, I disagree. I think in a thread that also discusses DnB, breaks are definitely relative. They're pretty similar, y'know? And there have a few crossovers in artists (DnB producers making breaks tracks and vice versa)

quote:

Trying to suggest that it's a split of midrange and 'downtempo' is just loving stupid, as if you can't have dancefloor tracks which are not solely obnoxious midrange.

That's not quite the point the I was trying to make, but I see what you're saying. What I was getting at was in terms of dubstep the poo poo that ticks my boxes tends to be more jump up, higher energy stuff. But the majority of that kind of stuff tends to be midrange. Cheers for the links though, I quite like these 3:

quote:

D1 - Flood of Emotions http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6SYIjULvSk
Aquasky - Taken Over Me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXwuvjTYLiU
Hudson Mohawke - Thunder Bay http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvKAr9qaI1I

And honestly, my neophyte days are over :p although I would've preffered you linking to 'alles kaput'

gently caress it, have some breaks. Uk style, (mostly) uk artists, and definitely bass driven:

Top 5 Jeremy Sylvester eh? Bloody hell, we going to break out of Colditz at the same time? Nah that's a tough one though. Some stuff:

Definitely check the G.O.D. series. Kinda cheeky semi-white label semi-bootleg semi-remix semi-thingy. First one was done by Grant Nelson but after that it's all Jeremy Sylvester. My pick is the second volume.

He also did a single under the name Groove Connektion called Club Lonely which was out on Locked On so should be easy to find and cheap, a great little number. More 98-style vocal Speed Garage on the original mix, but my fav mix is the Nice 'N Ripe one.

His Miles Fontaine alias is also a great one. Though it's also one I really don't have enough of on 12". I do however have this one, which I mentioned in the relevant part of the guide, the best cut off a release on his own Urban Dubz label.

And off an EP on Deep Trouble - one of the best of Nice 'N Ripe many sublabels - is this gem, which is nice slinky metallic number. The rest of the EP is great too, as is his other one on Deep Trouble.

And a bit later on you had him releasing stuff under the Club Asylum name. A couple of releases came out on the great Qualifide label(one of the few labels pushing garage bust). Taking Over Me is great with all that Todd Edwards-esque cut-up vocals and funky works.

There's something else that I really love as well that I want to include but I just can't remember what the gently caress it is. I'll need to dig in the shelves a bit tomorrow and try remember. Maybe it was a remix he did? Hmm... Anyway that's some food for thought. Really though trying to get on top of Jeremy Sylvester and all his alias and labels is a losing battle really. Too many great cuts to count really.

Breaks

Nah not really man. I remember when all that Nu-Breaks, Nu-Skool Breaks or whatever it was they were calling it then, was running mid-2000s or so. Didn't really crossover or had much to do with the Garage scene at all which is where all this is from. It all seemed pretty insular and seems to have died a death over the past few years with a couple of exceptions. You had like your 30hz and one or two others which were good, but too much wishy washy and by the numbers stuff for my liking. Someone once called it music for students and sometimes I have to agree.

Closest you could come is the breakbeat Garage stuff, but that's pretty different and firmly rooted in well, Garage. If you caught any Slimzee set or mixtape from 03/04 you'd get a good helping of that along with grime. It's where Dubstep came from though, what we were listening to before someone gave it a name.

And yeah there's no real D&B talk here. That's in the D&B thread which seems to have sadly slowed down over the past wee while. And any D&B released in the past 10-15 years has very little to do with the current scene either, most everyone who hadn't already migrated onto Garage way before then was gone from that scene by then. Though I was always baffled by the amount of refugees we got from D&B around 07/08. Strange considering we got nothing but abuse from a lot of them before then and they didn't give us the time of day. Well I guess the sharp rise in record sales and press attention helped.

You're right about the scene dying down a bit over the past few years. People slowly started moving on to electro house (gently caress no) or dubstep. Happily it seems to be going through something of a resurgence at the moment, although the styles have moved on a bit. Split between future jungle (not a fan) and nufunk, which is amazing party music, but not very bass-y.
Didn't know there was a DnB thread, I'll check it out.

I downloaded some random breaks compilations recently just since i wasn't familar with it currently and they really sucked. I wanted to like nu-skool breaks since i love hardcore.. but honestly it just sucked too, even if you're objective and ignore the times the tracks were made they were not any better than even crappy hardcore releases in 92. There was something just disagreeable about trying to replicate the sound, it was just wasn't right to me.

I only said that Neophyte song because it changes a lot which i guess is some appeal of the midrange stuff rather than actual progression or proper buildups. Personally my favourites are old stuff like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0VF0sVoUZM i'd listen to any hardcore over midrange though, 170 bpm kickdrum is less annoying than those constant random synths

It's a shame that it seems to be the only place big name electronic acts will play, it's an awesome venue but I hate going there because of the gangbangers they hire as "security."

It's a shame that it seems to be the only place big name electronic acts will play, it's an awesome venue but I hate going there because of the gangbangers they hire as "security."

Also, been lurking the thread for a while and I want to give props to Two Beans and Maguro, both have posted some fantastic tracks.

Yeah, I've been to Congress for last year's Pretty Lights show. The security is a bunch of dicks, but oh well. The VIP ticket my friend bought was clutch for the show, the bartender didn't give a drat how many drinks he got to hand out to his friends. The show was pretty good, but he didn't really play too much new stuff, just remixes of old songs.

Why is the sun always bullying me?

I just saw Blawan play a set at Horst Krzbrg in berlin. He killed it. Of course he dropped this at the end of his set...tune of the year folks!
