Speaking of remembering things differently: This was one of my favorites, and took days of post-Christmas pajama building to make. Things that I remembered differently: - It was more of a castle, not a jail - Why is there a palm tree and an evergreen? - I don't remember the draw bridge (probably broke the string) Captain Invictus posted:Had this - it ruled. It also stayed constructed longer than any other set that I had.

What I thought then: This thing is awesome! There's a dragon cage, and a trap door into the dragon cage, and that dragon head that shits rocks, and a secret passage into the dragon cage, and that one wolf knight dude for some reason... What I think now: poo poo. That set actually kinda sucks. And that black dragon head above the door is kind of... really loving stupid looking. I just ruined my own childhood.

edit: ^^snap bro This was my post-christmas pyjama build. Again I also remember it being much more epic than it is in reality: The big dragon head is a little bit Today I grab another Series 6 bag, had a quick squeeze on the way to the checkout and felt the telltale skirt piece, I assumed I'd snagged the Statue of Liberty... nope, Flamenco Dancer. beato fucked around with this message at 16:50 on Dec 31, 2011 |

The string in the old Pirate sets was probably the worst for getting tangled. Now they use this piece if they need to use some string.

the string with climbing grips is the best lego part to make fort rope ladders with. or for rescue helicopters, pirate ships, and generally anything else that needs a rope ladder.

We need more of these posts. I'll start. What I thought then: Holy jeez, this set is huge. It has all kinds of cool stuff, a satellite launching system and loading dock, a command center, cool little snow vehicles. Best Christmas gift my 11 year old self could receive. What I think now: At 343 pieces, it's relatively small now. The base is extremely simplistic with only the window panels making it appear larger. Still, far better than the spyrius base. The "command center" is very sparsely detailed and they could've done a lot more with the base plate. Also, don't these people get cold from having no enclosed areas to warm up in? Where do they go to the bathroom? The Shep fucked around with this message at 01:00 on Jan 1, 2012 |

6492 - Hypno Cruiser (1996) What I thought then: Woah! This is pretty cool! Not quite as cool as that new western theme but.. OMG is that.. yes it is! 6 random hats! Hey it even has a minifig of a cool cap wearing kid like me. Oh yeah, if time travel was real I would totally explore it just like the fearless Timmy. Yellow Jet engines! That red white swirly thing spins! I wonder if it could hypnotise people? Wow what a set! What I think now: Anger. Disgust. This is just disgraceful. Lets see, what do we have here? An extremely unaerodynamic and hideous car which also has helicopter blades and dragon wings. You get 8 head pieces to go on your 2 minifigs. If some junior builder came up and showed me this as an MOC, I would say it was a decent effort for a kid who obviously only had a very limited selection of parts. When professional adult builder employed by Lego with an infinite parts catalogue does this I would call it cheap, lazy and completely unacceptable. No wonder Lego were having financial difficulties in the late 90's. Who signed off on this poo poo? Has Lego ever come out and said "Oh yeah that Time Cruisers thing, that was just us clearing our surplus parts inventory. Sorry we priced and marketed them like normal sets " I challenge you to find a theme worse than Time Cruisers. It has also helped me realise how uncritical I was as a kid. I literally believed Lego could do no wrong.

Manchild King posted:I challenge you to find a theme worse than Time Cruisers. It has also helped me realise how uncritical I was as a kid. I literally believed Lego could do no wrong. Sir, I accept your challenge. 1997's Town theme is pretty terrible all around. While it's not the mindfuck that Time Cruisers was, it's literally Lego at its laziest. Just look at the lazy, half-finished, simplistic pieces of crap taking a brickshit all over the most traditional theme in history. Compare that lovely "gas station" to something iconic like the Gas N' Wash Express, or that lovely recycling truck to the many iterations of work trucks we've had.

Manchild King posted:6492 - Hypno Cruiser (1996) Even as a kid, I didn't really like this theme. On the one hand, the idea of hopping between time periods and making stuff with items that didn't belong in any one era is an idea that still appeals to me on some level (like the Back to the Future 3 Delorean/Train thing!). On the other hand, it struck me even then that it appeared that Lego were just trying to shift a bunch of leftover stuff from other product lines by cramming it all together into some crappily-constructed mess and calling it a theme, so I never bought any, because if I wanted to mash together a bunch of stuff from different themes, I already could do (and did). Also this is one of my favourite minifigs ever: What I thought then: Even if this is more of a figure set than an actual lego kit, Batlord is just completely awesome, and having another of those sweet proper swords is handy. What I think now: The exact same. Batlord rules.
