Dang, Xenonauts really reminds me of SWAT 2. I really want to try it but the $20 cost of entry is a bit much. Do they have an estimated release date?

No estimate just that it keeps slipping because it's their first game - current hurdle they are tackling in January is setting up their own render machine to process animations because they have millions of frames to piece together, and it'll take a few months. Most likely it'll slip to Summer at the earliest but should be very playable (in beta) during Q1.

Don't be fooled though, it's X-COM redone, so only worth buying early if you have a love of that series. Price will go up at launch.

The Void is a really bizarre survival horror game. If you want really weird you can't miss it. It's about uh, well, you in a void world where you bring life to parts of it by using different types of color. Difficult to describe really.

I really enjoyed it but it certinally isn't for everyone.

It might have more combat than you want(though it's less of a shooter than Dark Corners of the Earth) but Cryostasis is actually badass.

I posted this in the Steam thread but I only got one or two replies, pretty much just recommending Grand Theft Auto. It's a bit of a weird request.

I love games that pay incredible attention to detail and let you interact with it, a lot. A good example is Max Payne. That was a good game to begin with, but being able to go up to every soda vending machine, TV, computer, light switch, faucet, etc. and do something with it was almost all I needed. I bought Jumping Flash for the PS1 because in the amusement park stage you could jump on the Ferris wheel and go for a ride for no reason. Jumping in showers in Mario RPG, flushing toilets in FF6, stupid poo poo like that. Dead Rising with its fake retail stores was pretty high up there for me. I also bought COD4 just because I saw the carnival stage had broken down arcade stuff you could play with.

Yeah I know this is a weird one but any recommendations would be great. Thanks!

Alan Wake (by Remedy, the same guys who did Max Payne 1 & 2) has a lot of good little details. Negative points for a bit too much product placement though.

The game features something like 6 or 7 different fake T.V. shows you can watch on televisions throughout the game.

This is awesome, thanks. Especially since I was considering Alan Wake a long time ago, and kind of forgot about it.

Anyone with anything else, please keep 'em coming. Anything with, I don't know, a casino you can walk around and do stuff in, a cruise ship, anything like that. Again I know it's a bit of an odd request. But then again, sales of The Sims tells me it's not that weird.

The LEGO games, maybe? There's a ton of incidental things you can activate and mess around with in each level. They mostly extend to being simple jokey elements but they are fun with it.

The glow is a guide, my friend. Though it falls to you to avert catastrophe, you will never fight alone.
I have a weird ocd thing with certain games about npc allies.

If they aren't scripted to die, I will do everything in my power to save them and bring them along with me to the battle/gunfight/whatever. Back when I played halo3, the soldiers that were meant to die right at the start of the flood mission? I learned by shooting the right parasites, you could save roughly half of them and they'd join you in the fight. In other games like dynasty warriors, if I see a group of allies fighting even a small enemy unit, I'll go out of my way to wipe them out just so they'll join my large swarm of allied units.

The original resistance featured this prominently, even in the manual it listed 'hero moments' where allied soldiers were in the process of getting their poo poo ripped up but you could free them if your aim was quick. I unironically loved this part of the game and took every chance I could.

EDIT: Another bizarre example that makes no sense is in might and magic 7, outside your hometown there is a fuckton of goblins and a few friendly swordsmen dispersed in the mobs that are obviously meant to die. I pull every stop to make sure they survive. Seeing the swarms of dead goblins with the soldier sprites doing their silly idle animations is a point of pride for some reason.

So what I'm asking is, is there something similar to this in other games that'll let me satisfy my perfectionist tendencies like that? I love allied npc's for some reason and always want to protect my little swarm of good guys with my own gun/sword/demigodic powers

Fallout New Vegas has a lot of moments like this. You can save NPCs in firefights from certain death if you're quick/good enough, and they'll be properly grateful and sometimes join you. It's a good game if you want to for feel like a hero (because you're not forced to be.)

Ok Goons, Help a fellow out. I ask for 3 suggestions if you have any.

1. I am looking for a game to sink some time into. I would like it to be a management game or a strategy simulation thing or even a adventure game. I like my games turn based, and few years old. Any good ideas? (not much to go on but any ideas will be well received.)

2. Are there any sport RPGs? Sort of like Blood Bowl, but more reality based. A RPG dice style career mode baseball or football or any other sport for that matter.

3. Any Aircraft Carrier SIMs? WW2 would be the best. Not flight sims but tactical sims.

My favorite game of all time is Master of Orion for reference.

I have a older PC (ran Mass Effect 1 at lowest settings and still chugged along), and a PS3.

If you liked Master of Orion and you don't mind sinking some time into learning a complex strategy game, Sword of the Stars might be right up your alley. (Do not get Sword of the Stars 2, it's a horrible buggy mess. The first game and the expansions are very good, though.)

Another turn-based strategy game you should definitely try if you haven't already is Alpha Centauri. It's the sort of game that's easy to get obsessed with, for a fan of the genre.

Play Baldurs Gate II, the greatest RPG ever made, or Planescape: Torment, the second greatest RPG ever made. They're mega cheap on good old games, and both absolutely amazing. In BGII a lengthy side mission will have you (at the time unknowingly) clear out a castle or something, which you will then be offered to take as your base allowing you to store stuff there, collect tax or something like that. The type of stronghold you get depends on the class you pick. A fighter gets a keep, a theif gets a thieves guild etc. You can't like, buy bookshelves and couches and pick the carpets (play the sims) or anything but they do give you a bonus or some sort.

I'm not sure quite what you mean by customizable exactly

It's basically your home base in the game. You get it a bit after the first major town area. Do everything that you need to do in the first area before heading to the quest-related temple.

There's no tax collection or trophy room (there's a throne room though), but you have to defend against a major attack, and the tower is upgradeable. You have to choose your assistants (out of 2 choices for each type).

Two Worlds II has exactly what you're looking for. Outside of RPGs you could also look at strategy games like Stronghold. And if you play FPSs, then the Arma II Warfare Mod involves base building and management as well as sending your troops to their doom.

Do you like soccer football? Football Manager. This is both the ultimate time sink and the ultimate management game. More than a passing interest in the sport is needed unless you are planning on getting into watching it or something, but if you can tick those boxes then you're golden. I'd probably also say that anyone who wants to learn about the sport and plays management games is in a nice position. Easy to pick up, endless depth. Unrivalled.

Honorable mentions: you like MOO so naturally Galactic Civilizations II is a must if you've not played it. It's MOO, shinier and bigger. Pretty old now and everyone is waiting for the sequel. X2 is a spaceship simulator management game. It might make your PC creak a bit, though. Mount & Blade is more of an adventure, but has strong elements of management and strategy (especially if you look into modding it). For high-seas adventure you could go with Pirates! (2003), Patrician III or Port Royale 2. For base-building management style adventure the Anno games are really good. Beware though that the newer Anno 2070 is micro-management hell unless that's your idea of heaven.

Finally there is of course, always, Dwarf Fortress.

Football Manager. Seriously. That is, if you're emphasising the role playing part. There's no lucky dice rolls (okay, okay, there's a fair amount of luck involved) and certainly no pointy-eared types in this game, but if you fancy being a real person in a vast simulated sporting landscape, then this is the only game that matches up to your request. Again, above caveats included, if you don't care about football it might not really blow your mind.

You really need to play the Overlord games. They are a lot of fun, and have a huge fuckoff evil overlord lair to upgrade between stomping on goodie good heroes and stupid slack jawed peasants. I never get tired of pointing my minions in the direction of a house, watching them loot and burn, steal and drink beer and piss on the flaming corpses of poor farmers, and then have them drag back piles of loot for The Overlord (me). Loot which then goes into upgrading the lair.
