Really old Doctor Who is great, they make sure that all of the special effects are outlined in blue or orange so you don't miss that they're special effects!

to be honest atleast Dr Who is original and not tainted by the chucklefucks who made Voyager etc (Terra Nova specifically). I always feel like it's all tongue in cheek

yeah that pirate planet arc was written by Douglas Adams so I'm pretty sure a lot of it was tongue in cheek I think the reason I'm enjoying it is that it's so utterly different from American sci fi in that there's only a couple permanent characters instead of the typical pan-ethnic ensemble full of at least one of each personality stereotype, the most recent ones with more reoccurring characters are less appealing plus the pacing is insane, it's like they're trying to cram the most stuff in per episode It's not high art by any stretch of the imagination and it's cheesy as gently caress, I think it's mostly appealing because I haven't been constantly exposed to its particular cliches for the last 30 years

also the thing that's easy to forget about dr who is that if you are a child it is loving ultra terrifying. I remember I saw a tom baker episode where people are turned into crystals if they touch something and it freaked me out so much I had nightmares

those are the test episodes they did to see if converting the entire series would be worth the effort, they're just selling them early because star trek nerds have more money than sense
