His pre-battle speech at the black gate was terribly anti-climactic for me. Viggo was good, though... still wished Daniel Day-Lewis didn't pass on the part. He would have been so awesome as Aragorn.

I kind of liked Viggo's weird voice personally. Made him seem unique and like less of a generic action star. It did sound kind of strange sometimes but he's such a good actor that it worked I think.

Yeah I liked that he had a weird accent, he had a weird background and upbringing as well so it made sense. Didn't Viggo say something about how it was supposed to be a slightly Elvish accent? I might be making that up, it's been so long since I've watched the special features.

Perhaps it's 'heirloom' in the book? Octy fucked around with this message at 23:36 on Jan 7, 2012 |

To be honest I wouldn't entirely mind if they pulled something to akin to the younger Jeff Bridges in Tron 2, aka CG the gently caress out of him as long as it's only in the background. Any shot where he is the main focus disqualifies my approval.

Let's just throw C3PO and Yoda up into this poo poo, because if it doesn't have every character from the original in some way then it won't be as good as it could be.

gently caress I wanna see Gollum's cave and his greasy little island. I remember the visual reading it was nasty as poo poo. Think he had a hut made of weeds and orc skins, and there were bones, lots of bones. And where'd he go to drop one? There's gotta be five hundred years's worth of gollum poo poo stinking somewhere. The interior of Mirkwood should be great, what Fangorn in Two Towers should have been. Claustrophobic, dark and eerie. Don't gently caress it up Peter Jackson.

One of my favorite moments in The Hobbit is when Bilbo climbs up the tree in Mirkwood and sticks his head above the canopy, and he goes from being trapped in this dim, dank, hot, stuffy, desolate hell of a never-ending forest to chilling out in the sunlight, a cool breeze ruffling his hair, with pretty butterflies flying all around him. It's just such a perfect transition, and I vividly recall reading that for the first time as a kid and really empathizing with how *amazingly* nice it must have been for Bilbo. I sincerely hope they keep that whole scene in there, exactly as it was in the book - but for it to work they really need to sell Mirkwood as a truly awful place. It should be a chance for PJ and WETA to really show off, so I'm looking forward to that.

I should read The Hobbit again, it's been probably more than 15 years since the last time i read it and i only remember the beginning and that Bombur is fat. It's weird because in this 15 years i read a couple times The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion.

I always thought it was really nice how they took the time to do that butterfly scene in the Rankin-Bass Hobbit, with a nice lingering pan shot that let you take a breather from the action. But the butterflies just hovered there in place, which made the whole thing just odd-looking.
