I'm not sure what kind of gear he should be wearing in the SLS? It doesn't have a rollcage so it'd be worthless anyways, really. And you shouldn't wear a helmet when you have airbags in your car.

^^It's hard to figure out what GM did to that engine for its power ratings tests, but it's probably in the neighbourhood of 200-250 hp SAE net. Also, don't forget that a big block engine like that produces an absolute fuckload of torque.Fucknag posted:A 455ci V8 delivering 320 HP. And this was before unleaded fuels and emissions equipment. What the hell? Back then, they'd run an engine in absolutely ideal conditions, with no accessories (not even water pumps) for their horsepower ratings, to say nothing of running a carefully built "ringer" engine, as opposed to a regular production engine, which at the time was likely to never make rated production power. Fucknag posted:A 455ci V8 delivering 320 HP. And this was before unleaded fuels and emissions equipment. What the hell? In 1971 they lowered compression a bunch to run on lower octane gas, plus this is the 455 in a land barge, built for torque rather than HP (which pretty much applies to most Olds engines.) '71 also has more emissions controls and retarded timing compared to '70, again for emissions. '72 was even worse: with the change from "gross" to "net" HP, so all cars "lost" a bunch of power that year. My '70 Cutlas' 350 is factory-rated for 310 HP (high compression 4-BBL engine, standard 350 V8 was a bit less.) '71 was about 265 (4-BBL, dual exhaust.) '72 Cutlass 350 V8 was rated at 200 HP, even though it was identical to the '71, due to the "net rating. The 1970 442 455 was rated at 365 HP/500 lb.ft. 1971 442 was rated at 340 HP. 1972 was down to 300 HP, and that was in the W-30 hi-po variant. A lot of cars peaked in '70, due to the expected coming of catalytic converters and emissions controls. It only got worse from there, hitting bottom somewhere in the '80s. Then we figured out fuel injection, and efficient heads and stuff, so that performance and economy/cleanliness aren;t necessarily mutually exclusive.

MonkeyNutZ posted:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cadillac_V8_engine#500 360 lb.ft of torque at 2000 RPM. 'Merica! '76 was sort of a low point, though. Loaded down with poorly-understood vacuum-controlled emissions controls, no high-octane fuel, so 8.5:1 compression, severely retarded ignition and cam... Just replacing the cam with an earlier one, and advancing the ignition would wake that beast up quite a bit.

Yeah, but the SLS isn't really a supercar per se. Expensive and ostentatious, sure, but put it next to an R8 or Mclaren and it's really a whole different beast. It's not really meant for raw speed like those, or the bike, now that I think of it.

What did he do to get disqualified, and why was it such a problem that he couldnt still do his burnout (which lets face it, is not entirely artistic or talented, purely there for the spectacle) and not be scored? what is 'safe' about a burnout?

The burnout strip is well controlled and as a result risks are gently caress all at the 'Nats. He apparently disobeyed the instruction of a fire marshall in the qualifying, which as a person who has been the event organiser and Clerk of Course is very much not on, you do not under any circumstances disobey a direct official request, even if it seems unreasonable. If you dont like it, take it up with the guy running the show as not respecting the volunteers and disregarding instructions is a cardinal sin in any motorsport and WILL incur the unholy wrath of the guy running the show. I have sent home drivers and sought bans for drivers abusing officals and will never hesitate to do it again. He then obviously proceeded to not just disobey officials but to force his way onto the pad and break every safety rule in the process, those rules are in place to make sure a burnout is indeed safe. If someone has disobeyed a direct instruction, they are clearly not capable of keeping other rules that keep everyone safe and have no place in the event and absolutly deserve to be told to go home.
