They are, but this has multilateral repercussions that we need to follow. I would imagine the Swedes, British, and others were following the US hikers imprisoned in Iran, for instance.

So after going through both security investigation and my medical clearance finally getting straightened out last month, I decided to fire off an email to find out whether there had been any determination on my candidate status. Only to find out that according to HR, I withdrew my application (I didn't) and that I have no status.

I'm supposed to talk with HR next week to see if there's anything I can do to straighten it out, but it doesn't look good.

Wonderful holiday news. :(

Redacted for a tl;dr: It's my fault, I thought I'd cleared it up months ago, won't know more until the new year because of people's vacations and such.

Thanks for the condolences everyone, at worst I'll reapply next opening and know what to expect. I'll get there eventually one way or another! :)

So apparently a friend of mine passed econ with 5.7 on his first try. He didn't even apparently mention he spoke Turkish and a touch of Arabic because he didn't want to be bound to the middle east.
That whole disabled (5%) vet thing really helped though. I'm super jealous. I told him to enjoy stamping passports in Manila. :smugdog:

That should be a 10% not a 5%. 5% is prior service not disabled.

To nitpick, it's "points" not percent -- your disability rating doesn't have anything to do with it (well, it does in that it could be what bumps you up to 10 point preference, but there are other ways to get that too and BEX never actually sees what it is that justifies your preference, only the registrars do.)

I like the new language system... Although that stinks for people with Russian.

In other news, I was selected as an alternate for a summer internship at the consulate in Guangzhou. Still waiting on the Bureau of African Affairs.

I didn't know this but also helps if you leave your position, go do something else, and want to come right back. Makes it tons easier as long as you're in good standing when you separate.

Yeah, I've talked to a few IMers who've come back, and it was pretty easy after being tenured.

A lot of the internal transfer programs also require tenure.

All of us October FSOTers are waiting for HR to let us know the QEP results.

Either way, I registered for a college class so I can turn in an application for conversion this spring/summer.

Oral Assessment question here. I'm in Europe for a work project. My OA is scheduled for the end of January. Departure would require my resignation from the project, which will last several more weeks afterward. I emailed the reschedule desk at state.gov. They responded that there was nothing else available for winter, but that I could opt for the spring waiting list. How bad of an idea would this be? I'd really prefer not starting from scratch again.

Well, if they can guarantee you an OA for spring (and better yet give you a schedule date), I'd really see no downside aside from possibly getting on the register later if you pass the OA.

Out of curiosity, why are you converting from IMS to FS? (Curious because I'm entering as IMS.) From what I spoke with HR in December, seems to be the FRP taking its time. Wonder if the Jan IMS class is still on or not.
