What are everyone's thoughts on the Black Pearl set? I found it at Walmart on sale and picked it up, just finished piecing it together. It's the first set I've picked up with actual minifigs since starting to build again, and I can see why everyone likes them so much now. There's a ton of detail and cool pieces for these little guys -- I particularly like the shark-head man from the set. Also these new spring-loaded cannons are awesome, how long have those things been around?

Goddammit why can't my Walmart put that thing on sale? I want one so bad, but I don't really want to shell out $100 for it. (Also my wife seems to think my obsession with LEGO Davy Jones is "cute". Lucky me!)

The lever bases at the top and bottom do most of the work of holding the windscreens in. I think you can see in the picture that they're turned at an angle to more effectively pinch the windscreen between them. The 1x1 plates with clip help keep the windscreens in the right position as well.

The alien tripod thing and the Luthor Power Armour set have both gotten pretty good reviews in the thread and they're somewhere around $20.

You can pick up the alien tripod for about 25-30$. It's a really cool build and I know a few people in this thread enjoyed it.

I'm still seriously considering the Sonic Boom, because I am a giant dork. The Alien Conquest line never really did it for me but maybe it's worth it for the parts? The little head clinger is hilarious.

What are the Creator lines like anyway? They seem to have at least one neat design per set and a good range of pieces, but I assume they don't use anything too specialised. I'm kind of bearing in mind that I already have a lot of mundane pieces, largely from the 90s and things like green and tan coloured bricks are still a novelty to me. I've always been a person who builds the sets, keeps them around for a bit but is a die-hard MOCer, and I've only just learnt from this thread what that even means. I used to build free-standing bipedal robots before Bionicle and those crazy ball-joint pieces were ever conceived. Heck, I think I've still got a Wipeout inspired ship still assembled somewhere. Maybe I should dig it out

The Sonic Boom set is an amazingly fun build and it's huge when built. I managed to pick it up for $50 (AUD) in a sale at Target last year so I'm sure you'll be able to find it cheap somewhere.

Failing that I'd go with the Lex Luthor set, although I've not got it, it's definitely one of my next purchases based on how cool it looks for $20.

Just before Christmas, I decided to splurge a bit and put in a couple of Bricklink orders to get the pieces I needed to make this thing happen in real life (DesignByMe has gotten prohibitively expensive since the last time I used it). The last of the shipments came in a couple of days ago, so I sat down to build my first IRL MOC in quite some time. Feels good, man.

Taking her concerns for animal health and welfare to the skies, Mia teams up with veteran gunner Oscar (yes, the hedgehog has a name) and takes to the skies in "Beauty" a retro-inspired, environmentally conscious low-emission long range scout.

I made another micro-scale space thing. I think I'm going to have to try the concept on a larger scale for the tale end, it's supposed to just slope up to that but there are no inverted sloping pieces (or sloping pieces in general) small enough to work there at this scale.

I would get the Friends set unless I had a town setup to add that to. It looks like it is lacking in cool MOC parts, wheras the Friends set has Pink, Lightpink, Lavender, Skyblue, Acidgreen and puupyfigs.

Encouraged by this, I checked out my local craigslist. Nothing really spectacular, but one lady has tons and tons of boxed up lego sets. The problem, though, is that there's no itemized list of what she has and the pictures are too small for me to really pick them out. I emailed her asking for a list, or at least some larger pictures, and she responded with a brief email that said something along the lines of "ninjago, pirates of the Caribbean, star wars, etc."

When asked for the details on the Star Wars and Pirates sets and how she'd price them, she said I'd just have to come and look. I told her I'd rather not drive over there without knowing what was there and how much money I would need to bring, and all I heard back was "okay."

I don't get it -- does she want to make a sale or not?

Here's the link, if anyone is interested: http://reno.craigslist.org/tag/2769486358.html

Edit: If a more practiced eye is able to pick out any of those sets and know if they're good or not, I might try and ask her for a specific price.

Yea, not sure how far of a drive it is for you, but show up and negotiate if there's stuff you want. Also, bundling things together tends to help negotiating. IE: they want $25 for one set, say you'll take 2 sets for $35 or whatever

Yeah, I really just don't know the value of them though, and that's the problem. I guess I could probably get some estimates together based on the piece counts.

Ideal price per piece is 10 cents on a new set so I would start at like half to 2/3rds that if stuff looks like it's in good condition.

She had a system all set using her phone to check prices and then deciding what she wanted to sell them for. It looked like it had been pretty well picked over, but I got the Mandalorian and Rebel Trooper battle packs, along with Isla De Muerta, the Atlantis set featuring the submarine with legs (???) and six series five minifigs for $40.
