I wear a cage. There have been a few times where I would have been hosed and I've only been playing a bit over two years. I don't really understand how anyone who isn't being paid millions chooses not to wear one.

Most guys on my teams that I notice wear mouthguards. Guess I play with a bunch of weirdos or don't notice the dudes without mouthguards. Or they're all actors who need a full mouth of teeth to get work. haha.

Is it really that hard to talk with a mouthpiece in? it's pretty easy to float it if you need to talk/yell/scream and they even have mouthpieces that sit on the lower jaw which are even easier to talk with in place.

I've always worn cage + mouthguard because that's what's required in the contact leagues I used to play in. I've also had my share of concussions so I'm doing everything I can to help avoid them. I'd rather be able to skate into the slot and not have to worry about what idiots are doing around me.

Sounds like I'm in the minority though.

While cages prevent lip lacerations they've been shown to increase concussions.

While I understand the "argument" (not really), I really want to see where this is shown.

As for the other bit, do you know how hard it is to take a mouthguard in and out of your mouth with a full cage on? Sometimes you wanna talk to your teammates at the bench.

This is why you get a real mouthguard and not a crappy boil and bite one.

Yes it's probably overkill in no check leagues but you never know when some moron is going to run you for some imagined slight.

Fun Shoe
Cages can contribute to concussions in very unique circumstances. I know, I had one happen to me once (I still have the scar on my chin from it. Full disclosure though, I didn't have brackets on my helmet). That said, all of the evidence I'm aware of says that there isn't any statistically significant increase in likelihood; that any additional risk of torque or transmission of energy to the jaw is offset by the additional protection it offers.

I do think there is an interesting dialogue about how cages affect the way players play, meaning guys are more reckless, etc when wearing a cage. Apparently the NCAA is looking at changing the cage rule at the behest of some coaches. That isn't really relevant for most beer leaguers though.

Also if we're offering anecdotal evidence I can't think of a single time in over a decade of rec hockey that I've seen someone wearing a shield suffer a serious facial injury, although I suspect skill level contributes to this. I'm a lot more worried about the guys who can barely skate clipping me or flipping it into my face than I am about experienced players.

edit - in fact the only time I remember anyone ever losing teeth it was a guy in a cage who wasn't wearing a mouthguard, he banged his face into the crossbar somehow, bit through his tongue and lost a couple of bottom teeth

My wrist has been bothering me for a couple months, finally got to a specialist the other day since my family doctor didnt know what the problem was. Something wrong with a tendon that goes from my thumb to my wrist, so got a steroid shot and am in a soft brace for almost a month. Of course I tried to plan this in the 6 weeks I had between leagues, but it didnt work out as expected, took a month to get an appointment.

Got to skate at Consol again today, couldnt play pickup for that reason, but got to skate for 30 min or so and watch pickup. Someone tried to get Lemieux and Recchi to come out and skate with us, since Adult Fantasy Camp (pay $5k to skate on a team with 1 former pro and play in a tourny with 3 other teams) apparently just finished when we got there, but they were tired, would of been a cool experience.

Agreed. For example, this just happened in my Sunday skate.

The guy in grey that takes the shot is one of our better skaters, not some new guy. He's a little off balance, fans on the shot so there's no resistance on his stick, and the follow through blasts the defender in the cage. He was still a little upset, I'm sure it hurt, but we'd be picking his teeth up off the ice if he had only been wearing a visor.

As somebody else said, I wear a full cage because I don't trust the people around me to keep their sticks down, especially in beer league. A few years back I got popped in the nose badly by somebody trying to lift my stick up and missed horrendously. Bled like crazy, luckily no break and I came back to play once the bleeding stopped. I am awesome.

But yeah since then I wear a cage for games.

I'm not really sure what exactly I said that was so contentious. I don't believe (half) visors offer only minimal amounts of protection. I believe they offer significant levels of protection (when used along with mouth guards), as do cages.

I guess what you guys disagree with is that I believe visors and cages are pretty close in terms of protection. Where they differ is that cages significantly decrease the risk of lower facial lacerations, while visors (over cages) offer marginal decreased risk of concussions. Overall, I believe a visor+mouthguard offer significant and sufficient levels of protection. I think cages can be overkill, but I don't begrudge anyone that makes that decision to wear them - they're still safe.

About six years ago when I was deciding to make the switch I read some research papers online that covered the statistics I mentioned. I couldn't find the same research paper online now so you'll have to either believe me or assume my pants are on fire.

Everyone's leagues are different. Where I play, it's a pretty big deal if guys are swinging their sticks anywhere near people's faces (a large number of players wear no shield, no cage, no mouthguard; again, I think this is crazy). I've noticed when I've played tournaments in the states cages are much more common, so maybe culturally it's not a big deal to be swinging your stick around players' faces since so many wear cages. Here, I've seen fights break out just because a guy carelessly got his stick up.

Some of the onus falls on the player to protect himself as well. In situations where a stick or puck could come up into your face, ducking your chin into your shoulder or chest also makes any angle for contact with your upper face nearly impossible.

I'm sure it's possible to take an injury to the face while wearing a visor, just as it's possible to get an elbow, knee, groin, or shoulder injury while wearing gear that protects those parts. I just take issue with the thought that a cage is completely safe and a visor is completely exposed. A visor will protect your eyes from 99.99% of situations you'll face. John Tavares took a puck to the face tonight and finished the game with 3 points, all while wearing a visor. I've also never seen a bad eye injury in the NHL where a guy was wearing a visor. And if there was one, I'm sure that ranks as pretty rare considering how many NHL games are played at such high velocities.

The only injury I've ever taken with my visor was taking a slapshot square off the visor. The visor edge came down and impacted into my lip and burst it open and it bled pretty bad. My mouthguard had a huge gash in it and needed to be replaced but I didn't lose any teeth. I also did what any GOOD CANADIAN KID would do and stuffed my lip full of toilet paper and finished the game. Also, because I live in a socialist country with free health care and my injury was relatively minor, I pretty much had to wait until every person had gone through the ER before they would stitch me up. After reading this story, clearly you'll agree that visors are the best.

Visors also reduce chirps like "TAKE OFF THAT loving CAGE YOU loving PUSSY" by about 100%.

I'm confused. Do people really need to take more than one glove off to snap their cage straps off?

Let me offer you an alternative. Loosen up the tightness of the cage, then you can slide it up over your head without unstrapping anything. Now you have a dangle cage, and in addition to offering easier removal, you can now use more pronounced head shakes to trick your opponents when trying to deke around them because the cage will shake all over the place. Although in a contact league, a good hit towards the chin and you're going to cut up your chin (but there are chances of that happening regardless in a contact league).

nvm

e: last night's game was a total gongshow with the usual guys on my team getting penalties and bitching at the refs, one in particular this time. though my teammates were way out of line at the start, he--pretty clearly--started calling penalties that were bullshit just to spite us, and twice called offsides (one on me) that was not offsides (the other ref admitted as much). we played shorthanded the entire time and got killed by a team that was better, but not 5-0 better. with 6 minutes left and another bullshit penalty called (not even on me), I walked up to the ref, told him he wasted everyone's time here tonight, and that he should kindly go gently caress himself.

what a disaster.

e2: let me clarify that my teammates are idiot hotheads who bitch at the refs and take dumb penalties. if it wasn't for them this wouldn't have started. but all I and everyone else not involved in this horseshit just wanted to loving play, and this ref only made it worse because he had no clue how to settle the situation down and get the game moving, wasting everyones time. i played maybe 5 shifts all game, it was that bad. me telling the ref to go gently caress himself was me basically not caring about playing anymore and getting at least some satisfaction out of a miserable night of hockey. i didnt make one chirp or get one penalty before that.

My team finally won it's first game in 3 seasons of playing with one another this past Sunday. Although we won once last season since the other team had to forfeit. It was a great decisive 9-6 win also.

We had another game last night again a team of free agents. 75% of their goals comes from 1 single guy. We were shutting him down and eventually held him to only 1 goal all game, but still lost 8-6 with them scoring an empty netter at the end. Almost tied it up, but we were sloppy with a lot of penalties which killed us.
