Also, most of the dirt containment stuff can be easily disassembled and washed. The hand thing sucks (I don't think any suction driven would be "good) but it is easily disassembled and cleaned too. I've been through a few cheap ones that lasted a very short time for one reason or another, but that one has outlasted them all combined.

I ask because I'm looking into getting my own place, most likely with roommates, and I'm concerned about causing the power bill to rise. I don't need an exact number but would it be a concern? I need a little white noise to sleep I know this is from the last page, but one of the best things you can do is invest in a little wattmeter that sits between the wall socket and the power cord for (whatever device). I got one for $20 from an electronics store. turns out my laptop uses 75 watts max, while the tumble drier uses 2000 watts. That means I can keep my lappy on for more than a day for the same usage as an hour of drying. Which only costs 40c anyway. My desktop, on the other hand, uses an average of 200 watts, so I can only keep it on for 10 hours for every hour of tumble drying. (It uses way more if I'm gaming, but I don't game very much). My girlfriend and I are both geeks, so we figured that the computers can stay on and we'll just dry our clothes on racks and turn all the lights off instead - the purpose of the wattmeter was to figure out where the gently caress the power draw was coming from, and it was mostly heating, lighting, and kitchen appliances, not computers, (small) TVs, or desk fans. LCD screens use absolutely gently caress all power compared to CRTs, by the way.

I work for a small company, and our payroll and benefits are all handled by another company that specializes in providing these services to small companies like ours. We were told recently that we're going to be switching to ADP for this same service, largely because they have a lower risk insurance pool that will result in lower premiums for us. They're being pretty tight-lipped about the details until we have a meeting about it next week, but I would really like to know who my insurance provider is going to be. Does anyone's employer do their benefits through ADP, and if so what options do they offer for health insurance?

RebBrownies posted:Anyone have advice or tips on getting caught up on current events? I found myself in the same situation as you just recently (last month). Here's what I would recommend, but I'm new to this: 1. Twitter. You won't be able to follow everyone you want on your first try. Keep in mind that it's pretty useless to follow users that just tweet way too much every day (up to maybe 10 tweets a day with links to articles I want to read would be my upper limit, and that's just for one user). You won't have time to read everything so you have to be selective. I honestly don't know why people follow hundreds or even thousands of people. If you find someone spams too much or one user overlaps a lot with someone else, just unfollow them. If you want super local news, check out who news organizations are following. They often follow journalists and other people on the ground covering the stories. You may just want to follow a national news organization to get the big stories. I follow CBC because I'm in Canada. New York Times is a nice one, but they just spam to be honest so I don't follow them. AlJazeera (not AlJazeeraEnglish) is a good one. For some reason, AJEnglish spams a lot, but just AlJazeera doesn't tweet too many times every day. Watch for retweets. They're a good way to randomly network with someone you've never heard of before. If you follow a user that's more specialized, they'll likely retweet a user like NYT for stories that relate to them. 2. Specialized magazines and journals. I stumbled upon an article from World Policy and I learned a dozen things just from that one article. I was hooked at that point and subscribed to them (it was an article about Christianity in a South American country). Each issue they have has a theme. I think Foreign Affairs is similar and also very good. These two I named are good because they don't come out every month. Time is pretty good, but I really don't think I have time to go through the magazine every week even though I have a subscription, and it's mostly American focused. Mother Jones might be another choice for you. Go to your nearest book store that has huge shelves of magazines and look at the news section. They might even have one just for international news. If you live in New York, D.C. or LA, you'll definitely have a selection of anything that matters. 3. Debate & Discussion on these forums are pretty good too. You might stumble on a topic that interests you. 4. And the obvious one is check out the websites of every organization that I've mentioned. I don't do this personally because Twitter is already time consuming, but people do run RSS feeds, but I've never tried that so I'm not really sure about that. Also, just found out about the Council for Foreign Relations. They have a podcast. Oh, I guess they're behind or related to Foreign Affairs magazine. All right, this is too short for E/N, so into this thread this goes. I found out a while ago that my younger sibling is a brony. At first, I thought that he was just a fan of the show. But now he goes on pony sites, has almost nothing but brony friends, reads pony fanfics non-stop, and can't shut the gently caress up about loving ponies. He's just reaching adolescence, so I'm worried that at this rate, he'll be jerking off to pony porn while wearing a Rainbow Dash (his favorite pony, I think) ponysuit. Ponies. What should I do? Is there anything I can do to stop this?

Trying to force an adolescent to be someone different than they are is only going to encourage them to rebel and dive deeper into that behavior. Eventually he'll realize that he's being ridiculous on his own. Edit: if he doesn't, at least he'll make a great programmer some day.

The apparent obsession part doesn't sound very healthy. Provide alternative things to do, especially things like sports. Don't refer to the show in either in a positive or negative way. Homeschool thing doesn't sound very good. He could use RL friends. The "brony community" can be really intoxicating for people who are shy with few/no friends but not actually asocial. I have questions about bees. Does every country have bees? Has it always been that way? Are there any places that don't have bees (apart from Antarctica and the far north)? What happened before there were bees? I know honey has been a big part of human diet for thousands of years, but what about prehistoric times? How did plants get pollinated before bees? Or have there always been bees to do all that? Yes the bees!
|
# ? Jan 13, 2012 21:57 |

Honeybees did not exist in the new world (apart from a 14 million year old fossil) until the Columbian Exchange, that's all I know.

Plants get pollinated by lots of things besides bees. Other insects, birds, bats, other flightless rodents, basically anything whose habits bring it into contact with more than one flower can be a pollinator. Plants that are only pollinated by bees evolved and spread alongside the bees themselves, so there wasn't really a "time before bees" when only half of the system existed and waited around for the other half.

How long will normal computer speakers last in my bathroom? I want to listen to the news while I take my morning shower, and use speakers the with my phone (that has a normal headphone connection). The problem is that most ultracheap speakers I've seen are all USB powered because it's the new big in electronics thing or whatever. But I want to use my phone, instead of exposing my laptop to all this moisture. This forces me to spend more than fifteen euros on this plan, and if I do that, I want the speakers to last. So let's say I get some cheap Logitech 2.0 speakers (like these) and put them in the bathroom, will they still work in three months? Edit: and let's say ventilation is just a little below what I'd want it to be. Just a little though. EricBauman fucked around with this message at 22:46 on Jan 13, 2012 |

He's developing really negative habits in terms of the way he interacts with people and socializes that will probably persist beyond his current "brony phase." On the other hand, if this actually develops into meeting real bronies and having face time with humans then that would probably be a good thing, since it could ease him into socialization with extremely kind and nonjudgmental people. The worst case is if it just stagnates at being purely online.

In my search I've only found waterproof speakers that you have to build into something (a boat or something like that), so I guess standalone waterproof speakers aren't available in my market (the Netherlands). But thanks for your suggestion of wrapping the speakers. I guess even just a layer of adhesive film would keep out a lot of steam.

Plant pollinator systems are a pretty drat great example of coevolution at work. Many plants are also abiotically pollinated as well, such as having their pollen carried around by wind or flowing water. Even without animals some plants can reproduce. Bees are everywhere. As Golbez said, introducing honey bees to the new world is a recent event, but there are thousands of other bee species that can be found all over the world. Bumble bees (I study bumblers) can actually range from the northern shores of Greenland to the islands that speckle around Antarctica.
