Uh, no sarcasm. I wish I actually owned the impact driver I was borrowing, but I can't find one built like them anymore; ie a I hope I'm not loving up my terminology: I'm talking about a metal tube where the Easy Out goes in one end, apply sledge to the other end. Part of the sledge impact spins the Easy Out while the rest of it pushes the Easy Out into the bolt.

It was just so unbelievable that I sort of hoped it was true. As if the impact hammer gave the easy out some magical super powers or something. I pooped my office chair just a bit. Seriously though, we're not talking about removing a deck screw or something with an easy out. We're talking about things like "gently caress that engine stud just snapped off" level of hosed. In that regard, they're absolutely worthless. I managed to get one to snap off in aluminum. I'm still not sure how.

RX8 update. So it apears that the car had something tapping into the harness at the engine PCM... Which was removed at somepoint and had gobs of black tape holding it together... So I had to order a new harness for the motor, $390.00 that I really didnt want to spend. Good news is the new engine is at the shop and the old one should be out sometime today and can inspect the clutch.. It's got 87K miles on it but my wallet still hopes it has plenty of life left in it. $600+ for clutch disk and pressure plate from Mazda.

I was about to say just go to dial-a-clutch.com and get one of the Luk clutches but they're $623 before tax or shipping . They have some $420 clutches but I've never heard of that brand. Sure makes me glad my cars are always cheap crap, $200 or cheaper clutches.

They snap real easy if you put sideways stress on them but I try to just keep them straight and go to town; the impact driver probably helps with that because it's quick shots instead of trying to keep it constantly straight as you muscle on a T-handle or similar. Snapped exhaust studs, a completely rounded-off fill plug on my diff (the drain plug had already come off really easily! ), those lovely screws that some manufacturers use to hold rotors on, etc. I'm not advocating huge retarded hammerblows, just controlled tapping hard enough to trigger the driver (I like the sledge over something smaller because a) I don't work on cars all day so the weight isn't a pain, and b) I feel like the heavier it is the more control I have); a deadblow would be better if I owned one.

Very true, but it is still cheaper than giving Mazda something they can claim is owner negligence (even if it was a previous owner) and have to rebuild or replace the motor out of my own pocket. Argh, the love/hate relationship I have with this car...

It was an unreasonable 50f above today, and everyone flaked on the convoy, so gently caress it: Time to tear into the $200 part-it-out'er, and make it run instead. That's reasonable, right? My foray into the evil 1995 2.5L B258L V6 Saapel: Coolant looked ok, but a little ugly. Was not registering (common issue) Everything was scummy in the overflow. Flush it. Flush it again. Remove, clean, Refill, clean, refill. Of course, sensor failed to register a rare earth magnet, and a simple little wire-wrapped-around-a-washer source, so it's dead. Engine bay was filthy. First, degreased. Then? Degreased. Then? Garden hose. Then? Degreased. Finally, wiped down. Much better. Oil was clean, but drained anyhow, because I didn't trust previous owner's abilities. 5-40 for now since it's still winter, and I don't want it to make any noises it doesn't need to. Stuck a fram filter on it, despite better judgement, because I don't intend to own it, and the WIX were out of stock everywhere within 20 miles. Good enough for now. Battery is OK, but low. Trickle charged up while doing all of the above. Finished degreasing bits, checking hoses, and moving/tightening basic essentials. Did a minor attempt at rebuilding reed switch on coolant tank (with silly toilet flap logic), and it wasn't working, so said gently caress it, and bypassed for now to get CEL to clear since the '95 doesn't have any user-serviceable codes. Finished putting it back together and started cold. Purred like a kitten, instead of hesitating. That's what I wanted to hear. Brought up to temp, purged, etc. Tomorrow: Probably fixing passenger headlamp wiper if it moves (misaligned), or doing headlight wiper delete. More work on testing how screwed the gearbox is for top (motor and var. resistor check fine, thank god). Check seats; see viability of replacing vs repairing.

Pulled a axle out of my car only to have the boot come off and dump all of the axle grease everywhere. now my car won't be up and running until my new boot clamp pliers come in. Also, were would I buy axle grease? Would shucks or AutoZone have it? Weird shot that is, brown and runny.

ratbert90 posted:Also, were would I buy axle grease? Would shucks or AutoZone have it? Weird shot that is, brown and runny. It isn't brown and runny when it's first in there - iirc wheel bearing grease is usually green (remembering the Castrol buckets we used to sell - may have just been their brand). Not sure if they ever made anything CV specific though. I'm sure Autozone will have it. Just read some labels and you'll find it.

They'll have the grease, no problem at all there. Like Sockington says, it's not runny when new, but thick and packable. Also, comes in many colors, depending on brand and weight. Mine is always normal brown because I'm poor.

You're going to want to get a handful of grease and push the bearing into your hand (forcing the grease in) until good grease starts to come out the other side. It's not enough to just push some in, you need to force out the old bad poo poo using the new good poo poo.

I noticed a random belt screech would occur in traffic occasionally while holding a constant RPM range. I still don't know why it only happened then. Typically I hear belts screech during startup or during revs/acceleration. Confirmed it was the accessory belt since I could watch my volt reading drop on the ScanGuage when the screech began. Volt readings returned to normal after the screech went away. SCIENCE. Replaced both powersteering and accessory belts today. Easy peasy. Accessory belt was cracked and had an outer chunk missing. Very glad I changed it before anything bad happened.

Took the RX8 into a rotary specialist for its 30,000km service. Pull into the mechanics carpark and hand over the keys. He goes out and starts it up to move it into the shop and it stalls. Cranks it over, and nothing. You have got to be loving kidding me, first problem ever and it happens at the mechanics. I can see the $100 bills flying out of my pocket the more he tries to start it. Long story short, the secondary fuel pump that transfers fuel across the saddle type fuel tank is playing up, or in other words, it was out of fuel while the guage showed 1/8th left. Now i get to do the warranty dance with Mazda.

RX8 update. The old motor is out, 3 out of 4 oil injectors are bad and wont hold vacuum, the ssv valve was stuck shut in carbon along with a few other odds and ends including the whole wiring harness bullshit. I really wish I could pull the old engine apart, the number 2 rotor failed in such a way it pumped a bunch of oil up through the intake all the way to the filter and poo poo even more out the exhaust. They had issue ordering the parts last week, their parts guy ordered the wrong harness and pretty much hosed a bunch of other work orders up to the point they fired him. The harness I need must be made of gold because I shat a brick when they quoted me $1100.00 for it.. But now due to all the hassle they are charging me cost only so $600 for magic wires still blows my mind. Clutch is good shape, turns out it was done less than 30,000 miles ago with no heat marks on the pressure plate or the old flywheel. Truck update. Goddamn brake line blew out again going down the hill I live on. Pucker factor 10 when it went but the parking brake got me stopped just in time or I would have t-boned a loving school bus.

I haven't driven my car lately because my girlfriend has been using it. Today I took it off her and told her to start walking after I discovered the rear tyres are almost completly bald, The front brake pads are gone and it's metal rubbing on metal(rotors are all hosed up I think) and she spilled a bottle of Canadian Club in the back seat. She told me she thought she smelt something burning but couldn't be sure over the booze smell.

The car was in perfect mechanical order, had practically new Blizzak WS70s, I was totally awake and sober with both hands on the wheel and didn't even have any music on. It was just a zero traction situation that nobody was anticipating because the whole highway before and after that couple mile stretch were totally dry and fine. By the time the cop arrived 10 other accidents had happened within sight. I had a scare in the 6 the other day on Illinois, there was a patch of ice about 15 feet wide and when I hit it I fishtailed a little but the car next to me spun right over into my lane. Thank god for good breaks and fast reaction time. tobu posted:I haven't driven my car lately because my girlfriend has been using it. Rotors ruined on three wheels. Two tires nearly bald. Calipers on the rear were leaking. Master Cylinder bone dry and probably ruined. Ball joints are bad. Tie-rods need replaced. Two control arms are bad. The mechanic quotes me $1970 to get in in road worthy shape. Her father claims he has kept up on the maintenance for the car for the last 2 years but that was obviously bullshit.
