I know I say this every time but I'm really excited for one of the episodes we've got in the pipeline. It's an episode that no one has requested but that's because people didn't realize how awesome this episode is. No, it's not Wagyan Land but that's a great episode too that everyone is going to love.

After watching the Kato and Ken episode (dear god those faces) I'm way more appreciative of the ways you guys handle the subbing. At times the episode became a mess to read because Nihon didn't do things like blackout the japanese text or selectively decide what to translate on screen. Using a white on black font didn't help seperating the subs either.

Using a white on black font didn't help seperating the subs either. The other things that these guys do is that they also try to avoid translator notes. There's been a few times where I've seen translator notes that could have been better handled just by changing the translation in the subtitles and eliminating the need for notes. The only time I saw something that I could understand was when he was reading the description for the Journey to the West game and he came across "In...dia," because it was an outdated Japanese term for the country. The only thing I could see them doing is something like "Hindu...stan," but I think even then you might still need a gloss, since I don't think your average person knows what Hindustan would refer to off the top of their heads. The other thing is that Nihon is obsessive about using the Japanese titles for games. Once again, the Journey to the West game that Arino plays, they just literally dump the whole Japanese name into the middle of the subtitles. I don't think they understand that just dumping a large string of nonsense* into the subtitles actually makes it harder for someone to read and understand. That, or they are more concerned about the one nerd who would say "Oh my god, you guys weren't accurate. You should stick to the original Nihongo name, please!" *To be ironic, I'll make a quick note. I'm aware that it isn't actually nonsense, but to someone who doesn't speak Japanese, seeing a long string of words that I don't understand in an English translation needlessly is nonsense.

Haha, man just started watching the Kato & Ken episode and I so remember playing it back in the day.. But I was so young that I remember that I felt so dirty while playing it because the other character was always peeing and pooping everywhere. It felt very weird I remember, like playing a crazy adult porno game, haha. And then I also played gory games such as Moonstone but this game just felt so wrong to me, now I really wonder how I could be so prude, haha.

Apparently for all the trouble he had, Arino missed one of Kato and Ken's bigger dick moves. Or at least, I'd assume that if he fell into something like that they would've played it up and not left it out in editing.

Just watched the subbed JJ & Jeff/Kato-chan Ken-chan episode. As usual the subs were adequate, but I still caught a lot of mistranslations where it was clear they didn't comprehend or misheard what was was said. The most amusing mistake was around 44:30 when the producer says a staff needs to hurry (to catch the last train) because he lives in Mount Takao, but TV-Nihon mistook the "san" (mountain) in Takaosan as the honorific "san" (Mr.), and they translated it as "Takao-san needs to go home!" Originally, Arino is surprised to hear a staff member lives so far away, but in the subbed version he's like "Takao-san?!" as though he's surprised to hear Mr. Takao needs to go home.

zari-gani posted:"Hammer-gong the palm trees and lamp posts" Righto. I just thought it was some kind of "haha you need to start all over again" message, considering the player just shuts off the console then. And since the player goes through with it to show everyone I thought it was somehow relevant. But having to start all over again is harsh enough without rubbing it in, I guess. jyrque fucked around with this message at 23:55 on Jan 15, 2012 |

Mister Chief posted:Can someone explain what this insult actually means? It's popped up a few times and I'm not 100% sure. It's a standard Japanese insult which is why you've seen it a few times. It's an insulting dismissal of someone (or some group); they're not worth bothering with. Zari-gani would know better than me but I think a translation that carried the same meaning and weight in that situation would be something like, "Get out of here, kid, you bother me." Mister Chief posted:Can someone explain what this insult actually means? It's popped up a few times and I'm not 100% sure. A more accurate literal translation would be "wash your face and come back again." It's a common Japanese idiom. "Wash your face" doesn't imply your face is dirty and needs cleaning -- it implies you need to splash cold water on your face to wake yourself up/clarify your thinking because you sound like an idiot or you're acting like an idiot/performing poorly. If I were subbing the Angelique Trois episode (and oh I would love to because I love that game) I would probably translate it as something like "Get your act together first before you try that again" but phrased better. Because Sei-Lan wasn't dismissing her as a person when she confessed her love; he was just going "oh haha, a joke, nice try but you aren't fooling me." If you watched the JJ & Jeff/Kato-chan Ken-chan episode, you probably caught the same phrase being used in an arcade trip game after Arino got a game over. In that context, I would translate it as "Try clearing your head before you try again." ETA: Some clarifications after re-watching the exchange in question. zari-gani fucked around with this message at 03:08 on Jan 16, 2012 |
