You are coming down with me, hand in unlovable hand.

And I hope you die.

Blazing Saddles vs. Young Frankenstein is one of those eternal questions, like The Beatles vs. The Stones. Blazing Saddles may have a better laugh volume and is more subversive with the racial humor, but Young Frankenstein has a more cohesive story and a certain warmth to it.

Jurgen, it's hard to beat Kurosawa so you get Yojimbo.

Curse of the Jade Scorpion was really funny and much better than I expected. The plot itself is extremely tight, the cast is excellent (Wallace Shawn and Dan Aykroyd, awesome!) and it's quite funny in that neurotic awkward way. It does have it's problems though, Woody Allen completely miscasts himself for the role but it kind of adds an odd charm to the movie. The cinematography is bland when a more shadowy noir feel would've been better. Overall an entertaining diversion but not one of Woody Allen's best, it doesn't quite get to the place it wants to go.

LIST OF SHAME:

2.Fanny and Alexander: Seen a lot of Bergman but somehow missed this one.

3.Three Colors: Blue: Loved Double Life of Veronique, no excuses here

4.Cul-de-sac: Wasn't the biggest fan of Repulsion, hoping to get a better feel for early Polanski.

6.*NEW*Mean Streets The last big Scorsese I haven't seen.

7.The Filth and Fury: Documentary about the Sex Pistols, why not?

8.The Goddess: More Satyajit Ray.

9.Le Beau Serge: Considered the first film in the French Nouvelle Vague movement.

10.Orpheus: Just saw Beauty and the Beast recently, now I want more Jean Cocteau.

Days of Heaven is very much a companion film to Badlands, from its evocation of the road movie (though much more languid in this instance) to its wide-open praries to its earthy, off-kilter narration. Yet there is much of the Malick of the 21st century to be found; one scene that follows a couple walking on a river has the camera swooping & turning and feels like it could've come from one of his newer films (save for the lack of any jump cuts). Its a film of essences: the essence of labor, of play, of the seasons, of disaster, of grain, of a love triangle (as opposed to something more highly melodramatic). This breeziness to the narrative, I have to say, probably keeps me from embracing this film as one of my absolute favorites.

But man, the pinkish hue of those magic hour shots...

Ace in the Hole - Vicious Billy Wilder satire? Sign me up!

L'Avventura - I love L'Eclisse, so let's see the film that made Antonioni a force in world cinema.

An Autumn Afternoon - I've burned through nearly all of the single Ozu releases, as well as the Silent and Late Ozu boxsets. Let's finish up what I have (until I inevitably buy that combo-pack of The Only Son/There Was a Father).

Cutter's Way - A critic I enjoy reading said this was his favorite film of the 80s. I probably won't agree with him, but it's obscurity intrigues me and hey, Jeff Bridges.

The Magnificent Ambersons - Welles is always worth a watch, even if compromised.

McCabe & Mrs. Miller - Loved Nashville, haven't really seen anything else by Altman.
My Dinner with Andre - I blind-bought this before the Community episode. :smug:

Sansho the Bailiff - Ugetsu was gorgeous but left me a bit cold, so let's see what this does.

The Thin Red Line - I'll have technically seen all of Malick's features once I see this.

Wooden Crosses - I blind-bought the Bernard Eclipse set on the basis that this obscure French film about WWI was some kind of hidden gem. Now, I'll be motivated to see if this was true or not.

Le Fils I guess the images above make more sense if you've seen the film, but I think they accurately depict the visual style which is so essential to the film. This guy, who's a shop teacher/mentor, has his life turned around when a new student shows up. The close focus on him, his routines, and peripheral glances at his emotional state give the film an incredible intensity and the things that are revealed make one genuinely question where things will go. The Dardenne brothers really now how to extract genuine emotional impact without creating absurd melodrama. I was pretty blown away by this, it's really great and I shall now make an effort to check out all the other Dardenne films I've missed.

Updated list:

Possession Not sure why I have this on my need to see list actually. Maybe someone here recommended it? Seems like it could be brilliant or terrible.

Twenty-Four Eyes Never seen a Kinoshita film. Seems like the place to start.

Atanarjuat Been curious about this since it first came out, but 3 hours seems way too long.

La belle noiseuse If it weren't 4 hours I would have seen it already. I've been meaning to put it on my list for a year but thought I'd get around to it on my own.

After the Wedding Hævnen After The Wedding was quite good, so let's give the Oscar winner a shot.

Silver Lode Mr. Scorsese spoiled this movie's ending for me. I was hoping I'd forget but that's not going to happen.

Vertical Ray of the Sun Will I be bored or enamoured?

Stand and Deliver Teacher movies can be very hit or miss with me, but I've heard lots of praise for this.

New York, New York A Scorsese musical with Liza Minnelli and Robert De Niro, I don't even know.

L'Enfance nue I don't know what this is about but I've heard it's good and the one Pialat film I've seen was excellent.

I found this surprisingly enjoyable, so hopefully you do too.

Watched Fires on the Plain.

My Criticker review:

Basically a series of bleak, ugly, bloody vignettes of awful wartime brutality. Unfortunately, after about a half an hour I stopped caring. The narrative is incredibly meandery and runs out of steam very quickly, the characters are basically non-existent, and the visual style is compelling at times, but usually pretty standard. I liked it more than The Burmese Harp, but I wasn't really taken with it overall. 75/100

Also watched Dogtooth:

Great concept, pretty boring execution. Reminds me of Bunuel, but without the any of the qualities that make Bunuel such a compelling film-maker. 65/100

My list:

Ulysses' Gaze - I've heard Angelopoulos is great.

The Son - I feel like I should give the Dardenne's a chance, but I find their style so boring.

Ashes and Diamonds - Kanal was great. Should enjoy this.

Lola Montes - Another Criterion sale blind buy. Sounds pretty awesome.

Silent Light - Sounds really interesting and the style seems right up my alley.

The Letter Never Sent - Been on my wishlist for a long time, and it just showed up on Hulu Plus in HD. I figure it's time.

Last Tango in Paris - I just never thought it sounded interesting, but I keep seeing it compared to stuff I like, so I should probably watch it sometime.

Les Cousins: Didn't like Le Beau Serge at all, but maybe I'll like this one more.

Week-End: I'm not a fan of Godard, which most people would gasp about, but maybe this one will change my mind.

The Virgin Spring: Bergman and the basis for Last House on the Left. Don't know why I haven't seen it yet.

jonnykungfu watch Ashes and Diamonds.

Rushmore somehow manages to be one of the funnier films I've ever seen while still being emotionally involving. The writing, acting, music and direction are all pretty much perfect. I also love the way people are dressed in this film, especially a disheveled Herman in the elevator with a Diet Coke can in his pocket and two cigarettes hanging out of his mouth. Wes Anderson fills every frame with such rich detail, and I love that.

1. Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans - Next highest on the They Shoot Pictures list.

2. Time of the Gypsies - One of my highest PSIs on Criticker but I never really see it talked about much.

3. The Lives of Others - I see this compared to The Conversation a lot, which I loved.

4. MASH - Going in a slightly different direction when it comes to 70s war films.

5. The Cranes Are Flying - I am definitely looking forward to this one.

6. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid - Newman and Redford? I'm already sold.

7. Spirited Away - Next highest ranked movie on the IMDb top 250 that I haven't seen. This one looks fun.

8. It Happened One Night - Might as well put another Capra film here.

9. Rushmore Casino - I saw this a looooooooong time ago and all I remember is a mannequin getting assassinated and I believe a watermelon is smashed with something metal at some point.

10. The Best Years of Our Lives - This sounds pretty interesting, I suppose.

After a hiatus from the thread, I finally got around to seeing Deconstructing Harry. It's not my favourite of Allen's but it is quite funny and has many memorable scenes. It's a bit more vulgar than I'm used to from him (doesn't hurt it, just an observation). It jumps around and feels scattered in transitions from depictions of Harry's books to his reality. It's enjoyable and sad; silly and maudlin. The sequence in hell is fascinating as a parallel to his life as a novelist. He talks about unfinished business...well that's why he writes. To take care of unfinished business.

LIST O SHAME:

1) The Last Detail - Swearing sailors sounds superb.

2) Five Easy Pieces - Going to keep watching the America Lost and Found Box Set.

3)Long Goodbye - Altman + Chandler

4)Island of Lost Souls - Old, seemingly wacky (I haven't seen it, how would I know?), horrorish movie about Dr. Moreau. It's gotta be better than the Brando monstrosity.

5) Black Moon - Drawn in by various cover art for years. No idea what it's about.

6) Carlos - Will likely watch this is segments...don't have five hours to kill too often.

7) Mystery Train - Only Jarmusch I haven't seen.

8) Metropolis - Silent German sci-fi from Fritz Lang? Length has always held me back.

Ratedargh you get the classic Metropolis

Orpheus had a few good things going for it. The cinematography and the setting were incredible, especially the wrecked building that served as the other world. Sadly the plot kind of falls apart during different places of the movie, especially the bohemians that think Orpheus is plagiarizing then come to confront him at his house as well as character motivations that seem to change with the whims of the plot. Orpheus and Eurydice often switched between loving and despising one another so often I was conflicted as to whether they even loved each other at all. The special effects, though terribly dated, added to the odd surreal atmosphere of the movie quite well. It's really a film with a lot of good ideas that just needed to be reigned in a bit more, there are some very memorable moments in this flawed film.

3.Casablanca: Another classic I never got around to seeing, probably because I've seen half the film parodied everywhere.

4.Seven samurai: I have watched Yojimbo and would really like to see more of Kurosawas work.

5.Vertigo: According to friends this is the best Hitchcock film. Hopefully they are right!

6.Solaris: The book is awesome and I'd like to see if this carried over to the film.

7.Aguirre, the wrath of god: Heard it described as Apocalypse now starring conquistadores, plus it stars Klaus Kinski. What's not to like?

8.2001: A space odyssey: the furthest I've got into this film is 30 minutes before falling asleep. Really should finish it.

9.Requiem for a Dream: I had thought I'd watched this but it looks like I had it confused with a different film :frogbon:

10.Toy Story 3: To cap it off, here's a kind of joke one. Obviously I've saw the first two, just haven't got around to the third yet.

What's the joke? Toy Story 3 is amazing and I will hear nothing else. :colbert:

However, I need to hurry up and watch Marathon Man so I can make you watch Aguirre. It's a masterpiece (Amidst a list of masterpieces, but regardless).

Watch this one.

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind - This reminded me a lot of Princess Mononoke set in a different time. I kind of figured out where the story was going so nothing really surprised me. I would've liked to see an army of those Giant Warriors.

IMDb list:

#194 Mary and Max - Never heard of it. I just looked it up and it's about clay people. Hopefully it lives up to Gumby's standard. 6/22/11

#237 Harakiri - This must've shot up the list recently. 1/6/12

#247 3 Idiots - Read some reviews but that's all. 1/17/12

#256 Before Sunrise - Relatively recent and I haven't even heard of it. 12/29/11

new #260 Shadow of a Doubt - Hitchcock appears on my list once again. 1/21/12

Academy Award for Best Picture:

2002 Chicago - I can't say I'm looking forward to this. 11/27/11

1997 Titanic - Cameron is truly a visionary (in all the good ways) and I've enjoyed everything I've seen from him thus far. I did a research paper on the ship itself a while ago. I also remember going to see a Titanic exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry. They had this frozen block of ice to illustrate just how cold the water was for the people who couldn't make it onto a boat. The ship was launched just over 100 years ago so it might be time to watch this. 12/3/11

1989 Driving Miss Daisy - Don't know much about it. 12/8/11

1985 Out of Africa - Can't say I know anything about it. 12/29/11

1983 Terms of Endearment - Heard the name before. 12/29/11

Zogo watch your own Hitchcock masterpiece. Shadow of a Doubt for you.

New York, New York It's a good film and all, but drat is it long and messy. It's to musicals what Heaven's Gate is to westerns. It goes big and long and tries to do a lot of things but gets bogged down by all that weight. In this case Scorsese is trying to hearken back to 50s musicals while also adding a touch of 70s gritty realism to the characters. What we get is a DeNiro character who's amusing but not very sympathetic, a string of musical numbers pushed off to the end, and uneven pacing. I enjoyed it well enough but wouldn't care to watch it again.

Hoping for not bored.

Dodes'ka-den is amazing, caught me off guard to be honest. It's really loving bleak, even for the man who made Ran. Though in the midst of such despair Kurosawa seems to find something good and beautiful, while there's still dreamers and imagination there's still hope. The use of colour is fantastic, Kurosawa is best known for his brilliant B&W composition, but he does amazing stuff with colours, so vibrant and brutal it fills the eye. The final shots with the paintings was probably the best thing he directed. A top tier Kurosawa for me.

Also ended up being forced to watch the rest of the Millennium series by someone else, and they not are not very good overall. The second one still has something redeemable, the past of Lisbeth is intriguing and Noomi Rapace is still great. By the third film, the franchise has nowhere to go, but to wrap up this stupid government conspiracy plot and wrap up Lisbeth's back story. It's not bad it's just really average, not even Noomi saves the third film. I just don't understand why so many people hold this trilogy in so high regards.

What the hell, I'll just eat some trash.

Well, I was told that Mike's Murder is a forgotten classic crime film, and what do you know - it is! I was really impressed with this one. Mike doesn't get murdered until 45 minutes in, so there's this really cool sense of dread over the whole first act. It slipped a bit once he got clapped, but then Paul Winfield showed up and it got cool, if a bit weird. It's slow and methodical, and the gritty 70s-style camerawork was a welcome surprise. Recommended for sure.

Electronico6, Chimes at Midnight is like the definitive Forgotten Classic.

My Brother's Wedding So there's a director's cut that's like a half hour shorter? Which should I see?

Outrage Ida Lupino fascinates me.

Apocalypto This is good, right?

Montenegro or Sweet Movie I loved WR and the Eclipse set, but I've avoided Sweet Movie because I heard it sucks and Montenegro because the poster is crap.

penismightier, watch I Saw the Devil. It gets mixed reactions, but I loved it. Definitely catch up with The Man from Nowhere eventually too though.

West Side Story is an odd one. I was pleasantly entertained by most of the musical numbers, and I really liked the gangs' fast paced and funny dialogue. What they were actually saying, though, I had to roll my eyes at. The story was just too ridiculous. The gangs had an odd mix of very violent and very childish behavior, and the central romance was a bore. I don't even have to mention how terrible Natalie Wood is. 2.5/5

The time has come! Enjoy!

I finished The Deer Hunter just last night after breaking it into two viewings. I have to say it was a good movie. It's probably the only movie I've seen where I think it's extremely slow and that's not a bad thing. The movie is three hours long and they don't even get to Vietnam within the first hour. But every scene was not wasted. It was chock full of meaning and fleshing out of the characters. You really got to learn who these people were so that when they do get to 'Nam and you see what happens to them, you understand completely why they react the way they do.

It's a very poignant film, something I was not expecting. I went in thinking it was just a war movie and was completely surprised to find it such an emotional telling.

Everyone in that movie was wonderful, but special kudos to the leads! Meryl Streep was fantastically vulnerable, De Niro was amazing as always, and lastly, Walken was magnificent. It was odd seeing him in such a different role as the happy go lucky one.

My only complaint is I wish they would have shown what happened to Nick after he runs out of the club with Mike trying to run after him. I know the war, but why did he flip so completely to the point where he couldn't even recognize his friend?

Anyhow, fantastic film!

My updated list:

1. Philadelphia Story - Another movie I have no idea about, but it keeps getting recommended in this thread.

2. Mad Max. Here's something interesting. I didn't know this was three movies. I thought they were all one movie. So if this isn't the first one, let me know and I'll watch the first one instead.

3. The 3 Faces of Eve. If I'm not mistaken, this is about a woman with multiple personalities, yes?

4. The Crying Game. I know the twist about this movie, but I'm hoping that doesn't make it not worth watching.

5. Platoon. I get the feeling this is a wannabee Apocalypse Now. I hope it stands on it's own.

6. The Kite Runner. I've heard nothing but amazement over this movie, but I really don't like the Middle East wars and I think this would just make me unable to appreciate the movie? I hope I'm wrong.

7. La Dolce Vita. Have no idea what this is about at all. I'm not even very sure of who directs it. I hope it's good.

8. My Neighbor Totoro Don't know too much about this one. I like the director and enjoyed Spirited Away, so I'm hoping this one will be good.

9. Rabbit Proof Fence. My dad has been trying to get me to see this one since he saw it, saying it's fantastic. Just never got around to it.

10. The Lives of Others. This looked interesting when I saw the previews when it first came out, but I've never gotten around to seeing it. I hope it really is as good as others make it out to be.

Finished movies: Die Hard; Dr. Strangelove.; Chinatown; Citizen Kane; There Will Be Blood; Do The Right Thing; The Graduate; Rocky; The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly; A Streetcar Named Desire; Apocalypse Now; Children of a Lesser God; City of God; The Pianist; The Red Shoes; Eraserhead; Vertigo; Raging Bull; 2001: A Space Odyssey; Tombstone; Seven Samurai; 8 1/2; Dancer in the Dark; Lawrence of Arabia; Metropolis; It happened One Night; Bonnie and Clyde; The Seventh Seal; Singing in the Rain; Barton Fink; Sunset Boulevard; The Gold Rush; The Deer Hunter

Did you like 8 1/2? La Dolce Vita is directed by the same guy (same dude?), and has a similar attitude. The basic idea is that Fellini grew up near a coastal resort town, and decided to make a movie about his observations of the rich people that came parading through.

Finally finished 8 1/2. It was okay. I didn't find anything spectacular about it, but it was interesting. I enjoyed the dream sequences, as they really told you what kind of man Guido was. I don't know that I "get" Fellini, but I certainly didn't come away empty handed.

I don't know a lot about La Dolce Vita, but as it's the more mainstream of the films, I have to think the problems I had with 8 1/2 might not be as big a deal with La Dolce Vida. Namely, the surrealism.

Yeah, but without the surrealism Fellini's creepy attitudes and ideologically inconsistent viewpoints come to the fore more strongly. It's still a solid film and gorgeous to look at.

8 1/2 probably took me 3 or 4 viewings before it became one of my favorite films of all time. La Dolce Vita still has surrealistic elements and a slightly disjointed episodic nature but it's far less chaotic. In fact, thematically 8 1/2 is almost like a sequel to La Dolce Vita as well as a direct response to it.

I've recommended this to someone else and it wasn't as well received as I hoped. Let's see if you like it any better. It really is a delightful little film, I watched it for the first time in college and it made me feel like a little kid.

____

Raging Bull has been completed. It's no Taxi Driver, but it certainly was good in its own right. The presentation and cinematography were obviously top tier, super impressive poo poo. I like that generally, this wasn't so much your standard plot. It feels very much like a "hey this what this guy's life was like, and that's all there is too it" type of film. I can't say that I sympathized too much with Jake, but I can say that I understood who he was, and I can't help but think that Scorsese was going for something along those lines. The portrayal of Jake as well as those around him gave me a lot to think about and it was all done very well. This was a good film makes the argument that DeNiro is worth more than I originally credited him for (I still reserve the right to hate him for the Meet the Parents franchise).

My New List

1. How To Train Your Dragon

I avoided this mainly due to being a Pixar loyalist, but it may be nice to step out of my comfort zone a bit. Also, the girlfriend wants to see it, so that’ll be fun.

2. Terminator 2: Judgment Day

I still haven't liked anything I've seen by Cameron all that much. I've heard nothing but good things about this though, the first one was... fine? It wasn't all that memorable for me.

3. The Night of the Hunter

Seems to be a favorite around here. Generally, I find noir hard to grasp. I'm willing to give the genre another good try though.

4. *NEW* Requiem for a Dream*NEW*

I'll be perfectly honest... I don't want to see this. I don't like gritty drug stuff and this movie seems way too intense for my liking. I felt uncomfortable enough with The Wrestler and from what I understand it's leagues behind Aronofsky's "finest offering". If you pick this movie for me, I expect that you will also send me a PM with your phone number, so that I may call you, in terror, at 4 in the morning every night for weeks after I watch it.

5. Unforgiven
Not a whole to say about this other than it’s high up on my flickchart list of movies I haven’t seen. I really don’t like Hackman but I’ve heard he’s good in this so maybe this will turn my opinion around.

6. Roman Holiday

Loved what I saw of this. Hepburn is cute as hell and this really just seems like a barrel of fun.

7. Badlands

Haven't seen any Malick yet, and the trailer for the Tree of Life looked really god drat good. I'd like to be exposed to something of his before I check out Tree of Life.

8. Serpico

Kind of lovely that I consider myself a Pacino man and I haven't seen this yet.

9. Manhattan

My first Woody pick was one of the most enjoyable experiences I’ve gotten out of this thread, I’ve heard Manhattan is one of his best, definitely looking forward to this one.

10. Ikiru

I've tried to finish this 2 times. Each time, I got further into it, and I genuinely loved what I've seen. Things got in the way both times, I don't really remember what or how. Anyway, with this thread's support, I'm sure I'll finish and love the drat thing.

You will.

Forgotten Classic is a good way to describe Chimes at Midnight. It's some sort of crime that this film isn't on Blu Ray, cause this has some really impressive B&W cinematography, and it's Orson Welles we talking about here. The man has a high reputation for great cinematography and here with Chimes Welles is at the top of his game. Besides the visual feast, Welles delivers a great Shakespeare adaptation, probably one of the best in cinema filled with humour, a big nasty battle in the middle and a whole lot of melancholia and tragedy. Some fine performances too, Welles is always fun to watch but John Gielgud does a fantastic Henry IV.

Electronico6 watch Miller's Crossing.

MASH - I really wish I liked this more, because there are some great lines and I liked most of the performances, but almost everything else just annoyed me. Something about the humor just rubbed me the wrong way. I also thought that this film was pretty sexist, and with regards to the dentist subplot, homophobic as well.

I don't really know why I had such a strong negative reaction to this movie, considering that The Long Goodbye isn't that much different in tone or dark content, yet I loved that. :(

4. MASH Monty Python and the Holy Grail - Maybe now I'll actually get the millions of references to this in other media.

9. Casino - I saw this a looooooooong time ago and all I remember is a mannequin getting assassinated and I believe a watermelon is smashed with something metal at some point.

10. The Best Years of Our Lives - This sounds pretty interesting, I suppose.

Go see this, it's an amazing film.

I can see why Vertigo is ranked as one of Hitchcocks best films. Scotties turn to the obsessive was portrayed brilliantly by James Stewart and the film managed to keep the tension there even after the mystery was 'solved' part way through. The only thing that I felt was off was the abrupt ending, though I can't really say it negatively effected the film.

The Shame:

1.A fistful of dollars: I haven't seen any of the dollars trilogy, so I thought I should start with the first one released.

2.Citizen kane: My exposure to this is limited to "rosebud" and that gif of Orson Wells clapping. Hopefully it doesn't disappoint seeing how it's hyped as 'the greatest film ever'.

3.Casablanca: Another classic I never got around to seeing, probably because I've seen half the film parodied everywhere.

4.Seven samurai: I have watched Yojimbo and would really like to see more of Kurosawas work.

5.Vertigo
Touch of evil: I remember seeing the brilliant opening shot but that's it. I do love me some film noir though.

A Fistful of Dollars it is for you, then!

Saving Private Ryan earns every second of its nearly 3 hour running time and it's kind of amazing I've avoided seeing it in the 13.5 years it's been out; great pick for my entrance into this thread, penismightier! For various reasons I was reminded of Three Kings, among them: both being ensemble war films, contemporaries, and the color technique (just looked up the name: bleach bypass.) Like Casablanca, this was for me (and I'm surely not alone) a film that had gained the mantle of "Important," and that in the watching surprised me with how entertaining and engaging it is, something that will probably continue to happen to me even as I get used to it. All of the pathos is there but the film never gets bogged down in it or becomes difficult to watch. Just excellent all around.

Updated list:

Memento- :nolan: I've had a major plot point spoiled for me, which long ago robbed me of any sense of urgency in getting around to this one. Still, I also had a major bit of Fight Club spoiled for me, and enjoyed the hell out of that movie, so it's a rather excuse in general, isn't it?

Being John Malkovich- Adaptation and Where the Wild Things Are were both pretty cool, so it's time to check out Spike Jonze's debut feature. Also, John Malkovich.

This Is Spinal Tap- I really have no excuse, except that the DVR hosed up when recording it off TCM, and there's no way I'm going to watch this for the first time on basic cable. Thanks, Netflix streaming, for being there for me, and letting me put this in a queue where I continue to ignore it because I take it for granted, or something.

Lethal Weapon- Bit by bit catching up on '80s and '90s action movies, and this is the next big one I've yet to see.

Leon (The Professional)- Everyone I know who has seen this loves it. Really looking forward to it, but the fact that it's on DVD and not something I need to get to before it expires from streaming or gets recorded over leads to another taken for granted/lack of urgency situation.

Tora! Tora! Tora!- Been interested to see this ever since the WWII unit in high school history class where I first heard of it. Given the other WWII films we watched in that class, I'm excited.

La Strada- I've never seen any Fellini.

Saving Private Ryan- I'm just a terrible human being, I guess.

Robin Hood: Men in Tights- Apparently a Mel Brooks classic among my age group, watched by many as young kids who probably shouldn't have watched it, and later a staple of high school band trips. I wasn't in band, so I missed a prime opportunity there.

King Kong- I did see this once, but it's been a long time. Like, "back before Remember WENN when AMC talked up film preservation and showed classic American movies and this was one I happened to catch" long time. Since I've only really gotten into classic films in the last couple years, and since it's on the DVR, it is time for a rewatch.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind- Replacing one three hour Spielberg film with another. I've caught the ending so many times on TV but have never sat down for the whole thing. Had the DVD for a couple years now, and am no longer averse to 3 hour movies, so the excuses are running out.

Miller's Crossing might be the funniest gangster film I ever watched. Picking all that mythos that The Godfather created and have some jokes at it's expense. Whole lot of fun watching Gabriel Byrne maneuvering through these larger than life mob characters. Amazingly absurd, even when it gets around to the big Drama Moments it has a dark bite to it. "I think these guys are trying to whack me!"

Might not up there with their most dark humour like Barton Fink, A Serious Man and Fargo but it's close. Had a blast with it. I seem to have missed a lot of symbolism on hats and that every male character in this film is gay in some manner, but oh well.

we never say anything unless it is worth taking a long time to say.
Electronico6, I haven't seen or heard of any of the movies on your list, so I pick Wild at Heart at random!

Rear Window goes to show what a good suspense movie can do to you. I had seen this film during my childhood, and while I remembered a few vague details, I was practically on the edge of my seat the whole time.

New List:
1. Citizen Kane - Everyone I know hates this movie.
2. The Darjeeling Limited - One of my favorite films ever is The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. But I can't stand most other Wes Anderson movies. Maybe this one is worth a try.
3. North by Northwest - Recommended by very reputable sources. Hitchcock.
4. Spirited Away - For some reason everyone who knows me says I should see this. I'm just not really into anime. Maybe everyone I know is an anime loving gay. But I've heard it's good from credible people too, so who knows.
5. The Fly(original and remake) -Never really got around to either of them. The fact I am such a nerd for this genre of film only deepens my shame.
6. Mad Max 2 - It may not even be fair to say I've seen the 1st one, but I've heard the 2nd one is where it's at.
7. Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - Everyone I've talked to liked it. It's Scandinavian, so it must be good.
8. The Hurt Locker - Only Best Picture Academy Award winner from the past 10 years that I haven't seen.
9. Let Me In - I loved the Swedish original and I heard good things about this American remake.
10. Eyes Wide Shut - It's next on my list of Kubrick movies.

No longer ashamed:
Taxi Driver (4.5,5), Casablanca (2.5/5), The Godfather (4/5), The Good the Bad and the Ugly(4.5/5), 12 Angry Men(4.5/5), The Godfather, part II (3.5/5), Memento(4.5/5), Raging Bull (4/5), The Crazies (4/5), M(2.5/5), Barton Fink(4.5/5), Requiem for a Dream(4.5/5), Die Hard(4/5), Garden State(3.5/5), Star Trek Generations(4/5), City of God(5/5), The Usual Suspects(4/5), The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford(3.5/5), Rear Window(4.5/5)
