The snow and ice finally melted and we made a supply run to Fred Meyer to survive a few more days without power. I headed to the toys and picked up a box of series 6. BOGO50%, so I paid for 40 and got 60. Three complete sets plus extras!

Ordered the pieces for Cafe Corner from BL. Less the exact minifigs (just bought a few that go with the town theme) and original instructions, it cost a hair over $280. Was able to save some costs by buying what parts I could directly from Lego, which is worth it mainly for things like the dark red roof tiles and windows that are a ripoff on BL. Went with a black door for 30 cents instead of the grey door for 30 dollars, if the price ever comes down I'll replace it then. Probably could have done a little better driving myself insane but you hit a point of diminishing returns when you add in all the extra shipping by using yet another store. This was my first attempt at recreating a full set from BL and all together not too bad. I don't like Market Street and refuse to buy it so this is the last modular I needed to complete the set. Well, need Town Hall now I guess too. You can flip Cafe Corner on ebay for $600+ without box and instructions so I feel OK with the cost.

Leaving the stickers off is probably a good idea if you ever want to resale them. I did that with the sand barge and star destroyer. Wish I never sold them. the star destroyer goes anywhere from $200 to $400 now. I just started collecting again after joining SA and reading this thread. I think I'm going to make my new collection permanent.

saloon: http://www.mediafire.com/file/rb4o6e0p65abeoo/saloonb.lxf The model is split into floors in that file for easy rebuilding down the road. If it loads and says 2 parts are missing, it's bits of the lanterns on the second floor. It does that sometimes. Also, this is an LDD file retroactively created from the finished model, so it's a little bit different than the one in the brickshelf folder and may have a couple mistakes, but mostly in tiny subtle unimportant ways! Here are some fun details from it! Piano: Saloon sign (I made a big dent in Bricklink's supply of these back when I made this so sorry they all cost a lot now): Hotel sign: How the walls are done: Carbohydrates fucked around with this message at 21:34 on Jan 22, 2012 |

I went out today to buy some more bins and crates for sorting... But I didn't find what I was after so I just bought the Batman Batwing set. I actually really like this wave of superhero sets. They don't seem quite as overpriced as the other licensed themes. Also I think I may have slight precognitive abilities when it comes to LEGO. I remember thinking a few years ago when they picked up the Disney license that they should release a Marvel theme since Disney owns Marvel.

I'm planning a trip to the Lego store in Orlando this weekend. Pretty sure it's one of the largest Lego stores. Anything in particular I should look for? Should all the 2012 sets be out yet? I want some of the newer Technic sets. Also hoping to find some Series 6 there as well. Anyone want anything?

I enjoyed reading what people's first sets were, so here's mine. This is the first set I can remember having, when I was about five. Before that I just had generic buckets of blocks, this is the first Legoland set I can remember getting with a minifig. I have clear memories of after getting this my dad coming into my room and stepping on it. One other set that stands out in my memory is this one: Not because it was one of my first, or even one I particularly liked, but because I got so drat many of them. One year I had a big birthday party and I guess it was known that I was big into Lego, particularly space, and I got four of these from friends. I also got three of them for Christmas, so I ended up having seven of these.

This wasn't my first, but it was the first one I remember. I remember being so puzzled by the wheel and axle assemblies, until my dad showed me how they worked. That Jeep was awesome, and the single trans-green square light was a prized piece for quite a few years after that, since I only had one of them.

Hit the Austin LEGO store today. They had S6 minifigs. I was told that these are selling waaaayyyy better than they imagined and that they will essentially be out come mid February. Boxes are going to be "rationed" to stores that sell/have sold the most. I have also been looking for the Dynamic Due Funhouse. They didn't have it because it too sold way better than expected but at least they're making more, unlike the figs.

My ladyfriend's son and I did Falling Water and the White House. They look really nice on display, and were pretty fun to build (there's some brutal repetition in the White House set, I will admit). We also buy the smaller sets anytime we travel to a place with a Lego Store, so we got the Space Needle in Seattle and the John Hancock Center when we were in Chicago, for example. The JHC doesn't look anything like the real thing though (it's tiered instead of being a trapeziod for some reason).

I haven't built any of the Architecture sets but my general impression is that they're way overpriced for what they are. It seems like since they're so minimalist, they use very few specialized pieces and so you could easily re-create them off of BrickLink for way cheaper. Especially that one that is literally just a big stack of grey 1x1 cylinders.
