I've been taping along the bottom first for ages. At least 15 years, but I've never been one to tape the toe though. I've tried it, but never really got a feel for it. It's funny watching the kids I coach try to tape the toes, and then asking me to do it. They'll see a specific tape style during an NHL broadcast, then try and tape it that way during the next practice.

xzzy posted:Is there a special technique for the toe? I just did a few extra wraps beyond the end of the toe, and used scissors to trim it back to the shape of the blade. Depending on how lazy I am with my taping, I do one of two ways of taping over the toe. First is the lazy way, I tape heel to toe and when I get to the toe, instead of following the curve of the toe I'll leave some excess overlapping the toe so basically the blade looks like a rectangle of sorts. Then I trim off the excess around the toe and smooth it out with a puck. This usually lasts a decent while although I have had the tape peel back from the seam at the toe. The second way is more secure toe taping but it takes a bit more time to do right. I cut a strip of tape enough to cover the toe vertically. I apply that tape perpendicularly to the toe so the tape wraps from the front of the blade over the toe to the back of the blade vertically. Make sure that the tape is nice and flat and then proceed to tape normally from heel to toe. This gives a bit more strength to the tape at the toe and there is no seam to fall apart Both these methods work if you tape toe to heel as well. Heel to toe is just my preference

I went for the lazy way. Tape seems to rarely last for more than two skates (sometimes just one) anyways, so I guess I don't see the value of putting a ton of effort into doing a perfect job. I guess a lot of it is play style though? I know guys who tape before every skate and two hours later their poo poo is falling apart and leaving shrapnel all over the ice.

xzzy posted:I went for the lazy way. Yeah I agree too. My tape barely lasts me a game before getting dinged up from a slapshot or two. Sometimes it depends on the tape too. I've had super sticky rolls of tape and held up for weeks and I've had rolls that the tape barely would stay on the blade when applying so who really knows.

Hard to describe, but I usually do this: 1. Long strip of tape from the heel, along the bottom of the blade, over the edge of the toe, and a few inches along the top edge of the blade. 2. Short strip of tape (~3") over the back end of the toe, overlapping with the first strip 3. Short strip of tape (~3.5") over the front end of the toe, overlapping with the first strip and covering the ends of the second strip. At this stage, if you look at the toe end-on you'll see the first strip peeking out between the second and third strips, but the entire bottom of the blade and end of the toe will be covered. Steps two and three allow you to tape to the end without leaving any gaps or horrible wrinkles when you get to the toe. 4. Tape from heel to toe so that each strip across the front of the blade matches up exactly with the edge of the strip TWO strips previous. 5. Flatten and seal with a puck (or wax if you prefer). That will give you a completely covered blade with good cushion (two layers of tape), extra reinforcement along the part of the blade that touches the ice, and a good toe protection. I've had tape jobs last for a good month or more, skating a few times a week. The job only really disintegrates when its get enough puck/skate gouges in it that part of the blade is exposed. How about wax? How much do you use, if any? I feel like my tape gets soggy even with wax.

The few times I've taped the toe, I usually bring one strip along the bottom of the blade from the heel, and bring it all the way around the toe and back along the top about half way. From there I will tape from heel to toe like you normally would until I reach the tough part of the toe. From there I go slowly, tucking the extra tape underneath itself until the toe is covered. Because of the initial strip, the hardest part is usually gone. Never really used wax. Only use a puck to push the tape down and adhere it better. During my high school days, which was when I skated the most (obviously), I would tape my stick before every other practice, and before every game. Often I would re-tape during the break between the second and third period.

Wax slows down ice buildup, soggy is inevitable. Scored the trick tonight, they credited me with 1 assist even though i had 3. We also won 11-2 so I feel a little bit bad about it, but my first 2 goals were still in the 2nd before we started blowing them out.

I'm pretty terrible at skating, so by decent I mean fun but basically a beer league... Not sure how familiar with the area you are, but there's a league right off Exit 3 on 495 in Springfield at The Hockey Dek (they also have dek hockey.) I play in the D-South (worst) division. Most of the guys are pretty alright but there's a few jerks sprinkled in. They have open hockey every Saturday at 11am and it's a good group of guys, you should come out. We normally wind up playing half-court because only one goalie shows up. I'm the younger/rounder goon wearing the reversible easton shirt. This is about 10minutes south of Philadelphia. Marple Sports Arena in Broomall also has a league, but I hear nothing but bad things about those guys. Apparently some teams/players are moving from Marple to the Dek, and I hear it's because players there are jerks and the refs are full of themselves. I have not played there so I cannot say either way. Their open hockey is Friday nights and completely packed. Our goalie talks about a league that's in the Northeast, I can try and get those details for you too. It might be the same one Lazerwolf is talking about. And as Lazer said, if you're willing to travel to NJ, Deptford Skate and Fun Center (Deptford, NJ), Flyers Skate Zone (Voorhees, NJ), and Choice Inline/Skaters Choice (Sewell, NJ) are all <15minutes from the Walt Whitman Bridge into NJ and have leagues, and there's a ton of outdoor rinks around the area too where you can pretty much always find people playing. Edit: Lazer-- have you seen the outdoor rinks on the Deptford/Washington TWP border on County House road? Any idea if they're for deck or roller, or who runs any league that might exist there? I've driven by there a few times but it was always pretty late and I just didn't have the gumption to go inquire. cenzo fucked around with this message at 17:06 on Jan 25, 2012 |

The rink we're looking at is Warren Park on 6601 N. Western Ave I believe. The league is something like 10-11am on Saturdays. I typically play more inline than ice but Im looking forward to getting back to it and on an outdoor rink it should be a lot of fun. The only thing Im wondering is what to wear beneath. I typically only wear compression jock shorts, a tech tee, and socks beneath my gear. I will probably be swapping out the tech tee with a long sleeve shirt, for the legs, maybe some long compression pants/tights but I'm not certain my legs will be cold at all since they are generally pretty well covered to begin with.

A buddy of mine was telling me about a place like that in that general area. Years ago I used to play behind the Berlin Twp Municipal Court building (not behind the farmer's mart, that place's deck scares me), when they put the new outdoor rink out there. It's a little worse for wear now, and no lights, so that sucks. I'm probably going to check out the ones I mentioned earlier, I'll post here with any info if you're interested. Deptford's League started like 2 weeks ago. They have a Thursday and Sunday night league. Thursday night is the higher of the skill levels but even Sunday night's league might be too fast for someone who's never really skated before. Open hockey is usually Wednesday night for $10 for about two hours 9-11ish.

Anyone here have experience with groin pulls? I busted mine on the first god drat shift of our D4 playoff game last Thursday and trying to get a sense of what I can expect (and I've done the whole WebMD and Googlething). It hurt like a bitch when it happened, and I finished out the game but essentially playing on one leg, as I couldn't get anywhere close to a full extension with the hurt leg (and didn't even try). It's felt much better since Saturday - doesn't hurt at all until I'm putting strain on the groin (long stretch, kind of arching my leg back from the hip, etc...). It seems to slowly be improving, but I want to give it enough time to get at least well enough recovered to start skating again before I put the skates back on.

Groin pulls are a bitch. Speaking of injuries, I got tripped up in my league game this past tuesday and landed on my side where padding, at least for the pants I have, is nonexistent. Pretty hard, too. I'm not even sure what the hell is bruised/broken/whatever, but it hurts like hell and I've been limping around for the past couple days. Being an idiot, however, I skated tonight. Hopefully I didn't exacerbate the injury too bad! This is what you do when you love playing hockey. Or what you do when you're an idiot.
