I'm sorry, but I see more S30 Z car in this than either of the AE85 or 2000gt. From the identical kink in the window behind the b-pillar and the silhouette, to the headlights, which seem very much like a modern interpretation of the Z's tear drop ones.

Even the gas door placement is the same.

Tada-san told me there were three key elements to the car for him, things he (together with his opposite number at Subaru, Toshio Masuda) had to fight for tooth and nail. One was to steer clear of turbocharging, the second was that it should be rear-wheel drive and the final one was to use narrow tyres. I love that. And it's not just that the 215/45 R17's aren't oversized, it's that they're not a sports tyre either. They're Michelin Primacys for heaven's sake - as fitted to the Prius.

So they flex a bit, squeal a lot and aren't too grippy. Tada-san is emphatic that lap times don't matter here, what matters is if the driver gets out with a smile on his face. I am in complete agreement.

So straight out of the box they are saying that this car isn't meant to beat anyone around a track, but you're going to have fun getting the rear end loose around every corner.

All it means is when you park a supercharger on top of that motor, you get to look at it all the time.

200hp isn't anemic but it's also not really anything to write home about in a sports car segment.

I think they mentioned before that they're just leaving that stuff to the aftermarket since people would be modding theirs anyway. This sums it up better:
http://www.autoguide.com/manufacturer/scion/2013-scion-frs-review-video-1809.html

quote:

It’s not the raw driving machine many may expect. Its not visceral like a Lotus Elise or as singular in purpose as a Honda S2000, and it won’t beat you up. In fact, it’s quite civilized. It is, however, very much a purist’s car and one that company CEO Akio Toyoda aptly remarked, “rewards proper driving technique.”

A better description of the FR-S, or Toyota 86 as its called in Japan, there isn’t. The antithesis of modern sports cars, Toyota set out to create it as such, purposefully avoiding AWD, turbos, excessive technology and even high grip tires.

Instead, the basic front-engine rear-drive layout, combined with a low center of gravity (due to its flat-4 boxer engine), a limited slip differential and an overall curb weight that comes in around 2,700 lbs are the tools at the disposal of the driver. This can be humbling, but it also makes the FR-S a car where you can’t show up and fake-it at a lapping day. Flaws in your technique will show through immediately and the FR-S challenges you to be a better driver.

I've never driven one, but civilized and easy to drift seems to take after the 240sx/200sx the most, doesn't it?

Just got back from the Philly car show where they had a BRZ on display. Unfortunately I wasn't able to sit in it, but my first impression was extremely favorable. It looks a bit strange from the rear, but overall it's great. It's incredible how low they got the engine.

Was it just too crowded, or are they not allowing people in? I'm going next week and was hoping to sit in it.

They weren't letting people in but it was only one of those cloth dividers. Maybe they'll let people sit in it during the week? It was (predictably) a zoo there today.

Pretty depressing interior, at least the BRZ was covered up in carbon bits.

How does it seem size wise?
The internet says it's practically identical in external size to a 370z...

Does it seem so in the flesh?

I'm sure you can look up the actual length online, but it seemed smaller and less bulbous than the 350/370z in person.

Found these as "preliminary" specs for the 86:
Length 166.7 in.
Width 69.9 in.
Height 51.2 in. (think I saw 48-49" some other places)
Wheelbase 101.2 in.
Track F/R 59.8/60.6 in.

370Z:
Length 167.2
Width 72.6
Height 51.8
Wheelbase 100.4
Track F/R 61.0/62.8

So pretty close at the extremities, but looking at pictures of both I can see why it might look smaller in person.

Curious as to how it "sits"; the 370 is the only frame of reference I can think of at the moment.
This pic floating around suggests they're pretty similar, but check out low much lower the 86s' hood sits. Pretty remarkable...

Yeah this is what really struck me when I saw it in person. I think what allows it to do so is the engine sitting so low in the bay. Definitely looks better than the Z, although I've always thought the Z looks like a muscular fat kid.

Interesting, it just occurred to me that the Toyobaru is 2 inches wider than my 07 Leggy...

PS is it an industry standard to include mirrors when measuring width? If so I guess the numbers mean nothing...

It's usually measured at the widest point without mirrors, there's usually an asterisk or footnote when they are included.

It's like there's a soup can in front of me!
This is a post in which crow is eaten.

My wife and I went to the Washington DC Auto Show yesterday, interested in sitting in all the current cars on the market to see if we can find anything we both fit in comfortably. We are at opposites of the height spectrum (6'7" and 4'11"), and so far we've only been able to comfortably compromise in Volvos, because their seat angles are more customizable than most other cars.

We had a look at the various Minis (nothing was right), got told we were too poor to try the Evora or the FF, tried to fit in a Veloster, found out most of my head sticks out over a Miata's windshield, couldn't operate the electric controls in the 370 because the car had no power (unlike the rest of the vehicles at the show), discovered my right leg's too big for the 4-door Wrangler I've always wanted, and found out that she actually doesn't really like the seat in a C30. This last one was a big downer, and a poor capstone to the outing. What else was there to look at? Oh. Oh. :staredog:

Here's a photo of the two of us, for a height comparison that always seems worse in photos than it feels. For reference, I'm 30 and she's 28.

Wait. What are we posing with, inside that velvet rope? I... I thought it wasn't going to be at this show! Well, since fellow goon Casnorf sweet-talked one of the Subaru technical folks into letting us have a bit of a closer look, let's answer the biggest burning question: will we both fit in it?

Her, at 4'11" and 95 lbs:

Me, at 6'7" and 345lbs:

Not only do we both fit nicely, I suspect I might even be able to handle a clutch thanks to the telescopic tilt wheel. The seating and positioning was absolutely comfortable for both of us, which is absurd. My hair sticks up about 2 inches and was just barely brushing the headliner, so I should even be able to get a helmet on in there. I assume I don't have to explain to any of you just how great it is to say "Holy poo poo, this car; we should get one." and have my wife go "Hell yeah!"

Every last one of you bastards is going to fit in this car just fine. Well, not all at once, of course; after all, it's not a hatch. :v:

DC area goons, the show runs until the end of next weekend. You should go.

As a bonus, here's me finding out that I wouldn't enjoy a Norton Commando.
