A practical but non-academic interest in perceptual expectancy. To me, photography is engaging because when you reallly break it down we have the capability to pluck out a single moment from all the continuous moments that create time, preserve it and present it to other humans who did not or could not observe it.

Someone smart once told me "your eye is not your own". What he meant was that any piece of art I encounter was influenced by the artist's own experiences and everyone before who influenced him. He wasn't saying that everybody is ripping off everyone else, but that someone prior has already defined your sense of aesthetics as observer or creator. I've always liked that and it has led to collecting (even if only mentally) and noticing things I find interesting.

So we have the capacity to freeze time unrelenting and the ability to affect other people through our decisions of what to show or not show and how we present our little square slices of frozen time. Time! I marvel.

As for the second photo, that is part of the actual box for a doll named "Saucy". Saucy makes horrific demon faces at you when you rotate her arm 360 degrees. The photo is in black and white so the unnecessary information has been stripped away. I leaned the box back a bit to give me some DOF. The girl on the box is depicted as squealing in delight but we rely so heavily on total visual language that when you obfuscate the mouth of a wide eyed human, joy becomes terror. Parlor tricks.

As I've expended too many words above explaining, context is everything.

Scrub forward to about the one minute mark for some nightmare fuel:

But I gotta get over it to get better, I suppose.

Possibly the best Hipstamatic update ever:

What's New in Version 235
NEW FEATURES

Favorites - Save lens/flash/film combos for quick and easy access from the camera back

• Tap and hold to focus (when zoomed in to viewfinder)

• New HipstaSave technology to recover any prints that weren't finished processing in the event of an app crash

BUG FIXES

Fixes a bug that caused 'winding film roll' messages to appear frequently

• Fixes a bug that could cause a crash on launch in iOS 4.3

It belies my desire to invent narratives. I've entertained notions of staging scenes but the longer I spend zeroing in on what I find interesting and refining how I present that, the more I hold fast that interacting with things is how you spoil them. I started out avoiding taking photos of people because I couldn't figure out how to approach doing that but now it's almost what I prefer. Only when they don't know a camera is there though, because awareness of that changes everything and that is why I like using a cell phone so much or the X100 if I'm in an environment where a camera isn't unexpected.

As far as titles go, there is an underlying theme even if I don't do a good job of pushing it. Creating a narrative is roughly half the fun and for me, practically the point. If I take a photograph of something and it has to stand on it's own aesthetic or I feel that it doesn't show something that would have normally gone unnoticed, I hate it and it feels pointless and I'll invariably savage it. That really only applies to me though, I quite enjoy looking at anything posted in this here subforum. Every day is a perpetual show and tell day with lots of people sharing little views of what they saw.

If you select the star and hold your finger down on one of your saved favorites you can delete a favorite and recreate it. Not quite the same, the favorites feature is nice but the implementation is quite sloppy.

Edit: whoops, I forgot to contribute:

Tried out the accessory lenses I got for my phone for Christmas today (first real snow day of the year). The lens is already a little wide, so the result is vignetting on the regular wide angle, and super-vignetting on the fisheye. Works great on my Flip HD though, glad each lens came with multiple little magnetic rings.

I'm very new to photography. Or: I used to play around with an analogue camera, but having the negatives developed, scanning them, editing each one on the computer and then printing them out was just too much of a hassle. Got my first smartphone (iphone 4) less than a year ago and I'm really into taking pictures now, it's weird that it's taken a smartphone rather than a camera to get me so into it. I've recently taken to uploading a few of them to tumblr, mainly because I was suddenly kinda proud of a few of them and wanted to show them off :)

Here are some of mine

It's pretty good considering it's free and it's a first release. I think it needs a little work interface-wise as it gets a little clunky to use, but that should get worked out in time given that the whole idea behind the app was sort of giving people what they want.
